I have mentioned on here a number of times that I do not rate Butler

but

I actually feel sorry for him tonight. I just cannot understand why he was picked for this match. If it was to give him a chance at redemption, then he was done absolutely no favours. The conditions were never going to suit him. When he is in form, he relies on polished skills and I have seen or heard nothing of his efforts at VFL level that suggests he was in enough form to make an impact.

Not great form but hasn't been given much consistency this year either. Other players have gotten away with poor form much longer.

Probably trade bait. Will always fondly remember his 2017!

Papers now stamped and won't be at Punt Rd in 2020 presumably given he's been dropped straight away again.

Shame, I thought better of him but he's really dropped off.

Surely he's a goner. Wish him well!

I really don't rate the guy but he's still a premiership player with some talent. Wouldn't think he'd be getting the chop, we'd want something for him even if it's a late pick. But yeah, can't see him being a decent chance to win back one of the small forward slots ever again

Kinda stunk it up this year and wasn’t at his best last year for that matter but glad he peaked when we were all guns blazing to break the premiership drought. Thank you for the service Butler. Although you’re no longer part of the best 22 you will always be a flea amigo in the 17 premiership year

... Hardwick insisted there was a future at Punt Road for the out-of-contract premiership forward who has become a fringe player this season.

“He’s an important part of our make-up to who we are and what we do so from our point of view he’s a required player,” Hardwick said. “Where his contract is, I’m not too sure at the moment, but I love the way he plays.”

“Dan Butler is a guy for example who could quite easily play [seniors] but other guys have been playing a little bit better." - Hardwick.

I think his confidence is shot. I am definitely in the minority but I hope he stays.

Richmond's Dan Butler remains hopeful of an AFL call up ahead of finals

Ben Hopkins
Ballarat Courier
14 Aug 2019

After spending much of the 2019 AFL season out of the Richmond Tigers team, Ballarat born-and-bred Dan Butler says he is remaining positive his time will come ahead of finals.

Butler has only appeared in seven of Richmond's 21 outings this AFL season, kicking five goals.

Speaking exclusively to The Courier, Butler, 23, says while it's not been the best year in terms of playing senior games, his confidence remains high two weeks out from finals.

"Obviously it hasn't been the ideal year in terms of playing in the VFL," he said.

"I think the main thing for me has just been trying to remain positive... we've got such a good group of guys at the club so they make that pretty easy."

The small forward has spent 14 games playing with Richmond's VFL side, which sits on top of the competition ladder.

Butler says his time playing in the VFL has helped him hone a different set of skills that will help him perform at him peak if selected to return to the AFL.

"It's just been about playing different roles, mainly through the midfield, so when I come back into the AFL I've got something new up my sleeve.

"You never know what's going to happen... you just need to be ready so that if you're called upon you can do what is needed.

"It's been great to buy into the VFL program, we've got a great coach in Craig McRea and he's created a great environment within the group."

The 2017 premiership player is only contracted with the Tigers until the end of the 2019 season. He says he believes going forward he has proved he has the talent to be an AFL player.

"I think I struggled at AFL level this year but I definitely think I'm an AFL player and while I've had stints in the VFL this year in the future I'll look to consolidate my spot."

DAN BUTLER (Richmond)

Out of favour and out of contract, the 2017 premiership player will have suitors and will hope a big finals series in the VFL only adds to the attraction given his raw speed.
