Giving up a fully fit 23 year-old premiership player for a pick we'll probably just use to upgrade a rookie... :shh
We can not afford to have a player like Butler, premiership player or not, in his 3rd contract, meaning on ok money, playing in the twos.

We basically just need them gone for salary cap purposes.

Same with McIntosh and Menadue and Lloyd and Miles from last year. We replace those guys with first year players and it opens up 2, 3, 400k.

Sure our depth suffers but nobody really cares about reserve premierships.

That’s why your favourites in George, Lambert and Short are so important to our club. Cheap, but play a pretty major roll around our superstars.

I don’t expect you to like them anymore than you do but you seem smart enough to understand their worth surely??

It is not reasonable on the player, Butler is clearly good enough to play seniors, but is not guaranteed a senior game at Richmond.
Maybe a third or fourth round pick next year

Trade Wrap: Silver service for Butler, could this be the Saints' circuit-breaker?

RICHMOND will do all it can to assist Dan Butler in landing a new home, with the Tigers aware his preferred destination lies at St Kilda for 2020.

Left out of this year's flag, the 2017 premiership forward has expressed a desire to continue his career elsewhere after being starved of opportunities at Punt Road.

While the Saints are interested in Butler, he falls fifth in line of their priorities behind Port Adelaide pair Dougal Howard and Paddy Ryder, Fremantle's Bradley Hill and Sydney's Zak Jones.

AFL.com.au understands Butler will walk for next to nothing, with the Tigers well aware of St Kilda's long list of demands this Telstra AFL Trade Period.

Butler, who is currently holidaying with Tigers teammates, has met with several clubs including the Saints and Carlton.

His manager Alex McDonald of Hemisphere Management revealed to Telstra AFL Trade Radio this week he was forced to clarify mixed messaging from the Blues this week around his client.

Blues GM of list management and strategy Stephen Silvagni said on Monday the Blues had little interest in Butler, only minutes before list manager Michael Agresta admitted the club was still working through a process around the small forward.

Should the Blues miss out on Sydney target Tom Papley, their intent for Butler could increase again.

Richmond's asking price falls in line with deals it did last year for Corey Ellis and Anthony Miles (combined for a swap of future third-round picks with Gold Coast), Sam Lloyd (pick 64) and Tyson Stengle (68).

The Tigers' currently hold picks 19, 38, 39, 41, 75 and 77.

Richmond premiership small forward Dan Butler is also looking at a move to Moorabbin or Princes Park, but he will need to wait to see what happens with the others first.

Sounds like the best we're going to get in return is a future 4th rounder  :P. Use it on Maurice Jnr or if he has a breakout in the U18s next year put the points towards him.

Quote from: tiger tough
I've been told were chasing a 3rd rounder for Butler.

Might have to be a 3 or 4 way deal including dogs given saints need picks for all the other players they're after.

...

... this was from the mouth of a recruiter at another club.

Reckon Castagna is our best small fwd especially with pressure,  if he could just kick straight!!!!! he would become a complete player/fwd.
Reckon he is in front of Rioli but that aint saying much in itself. Thought Rioli had a very poor season and if he cannot add more to his game by becoming a decent midfield contributor could be in trouble down the track.

Lambert is a tad overrated imo by a lot of tiger supporters but he has been very consistent and earns a spot imo.

Short well he is the one i have issues with. He is keeping better players out of the team and is just so defensively poor and dare i say it soft.
Ellis copped it big time and this bloke should not be immune from the same sort of criticism.

I wonder what we would get for him if we shopped him around.

Gee very harsh on Lambert, he makes us a better team

His run and link up is crucial to our game style, very good player

Agree on your thoughts around Short although I thought he had a decent finals series

Cleary: I think Butler and Ryder are going to be pretty cheap. The Tigers aren't going to want too much for Butler, they'll help facilitate the deal.

Dunno why we let them go so cheap honestly.

Solid player, years of footy ahead of him, premiership medal, proven goal kicker, decent VFL form keeping the 22 honest. Great depth.

I'd be telling Saints to  get pick 45, 51 or 53 from WB as part of their deal for Bruce, then pass that on to us for Butler.

A premiership club's duds & fringe players suddenly worth less than every other club's duds & fringe players...go figure... :shh

Short is not soft. He has other deficiencies in his game but being soft is not one of them. Did you not see his second effort after his elbow went?

Softness is his major deficiency and the root cause of all his others.... one incident doesn't suddenly make him any more of a hard player in general than that one contest with Dangerfield in the '17 QF suddenly made BEllis one.....:shh

If the Lions get a 2nd round pick for Lewis Taylor from Sydney as reported on the AFL site yesterday and we get a 4th rounder for Butler I will spew up.
