Back to the topic, ppl.

Townsend highlights: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2015-10-16/townsend-highlights

Townsend is a strongly-built (186cm, 89kg), tough, inside midfielder, played 28 games in four years with the GWS.

The Tigers and Giants met on Friday at AFL House to finalise the trade, which has gone through for the current pick No.70.

Richmond also receives the Giants' pick No.120 as part of the deal.

He joins the Tigers on a two-year contract.

“A big-bodied midfielder is something we consider is a real need for us,” said Richmond’s General Manager of Football,” Dan Richardson.

“We think that Jacob will provide the sort of midfield grunt that we need some more of, and he will provide good support in the midfield.

“We’ve been watching GWS clearly quite closely over the last few years – not only their AFL team, but also their NEAFL team.

“We recruited Anthony Miles from the Giants a couple of years ago, and we are confident Jacob will make the same sort of impact Anthony has had over the last two seasons.”

Not convinced on his skill level/decision making with the ball, but definitely tackles well based off that footage.

Get to know: New Tiger Jacob Townsend

Adam Curley
afl.com.au

Name: Jacob Townsend

Height: 186cm

Weight: 89kg

Age: 22

Games: 28

Goals: 4

Drafted: Greater Western Sydney, 2011, NSW/ACT zone selection

2015 trade: Involved in a swap with Richmond in which the Tigers gave up their fourth round selection (currently pick 70) in exchange for Townsend and the Giants' seventh round selection (currently 120).

What the 2015 AFL Season Guide said:
"A tough, hard-working midfielder, Townsend made further strides in 2014. Usually given a tagging role, he is a ferocious tackler and averaged 7.5 per game in his eight senior appearances. Is still learning how to win his own ball to have a greater impact on games, but remains on track to become the hard nut most teams crave."

Where will he play? Townsend is an inside midfielder who could fit in well at Richmond and has the ability to pick up possessions while also shutting down a dangerous opponent.

State league form:
A pre-season foot injury ruined the first half of Townsend's season and a bout of concussion late in the year limited him to 10 games in the NEAFL. He was consistently among the best players but found opportunities at senior level difficult.

Best AFL performance: Townsend picked up 22 possessions and kicked a goal in the Giants' round 23 loss to Melbourne this season, which was his only senior game for the year.

Why Greater Western Sydney traded him: The pick acquired for losing Townsend – who isn't in their best 22 – allows the Giants greater flexibility in this year's draft.

What is he good at? Townsend works hard and has a fearless attack on the footy. He can be a valuable run-with player, with his tackling a standout.

That's a nice little highlights video.

Tackling was quite impressive - looks like they hurt.

Excited to see how this kid goes.

Yes, if he can do that in the centre and turn the ball over regularly it will definitely help. Will also help the tag on Cotchin, probably why we got him.

I really like the way this guy goes balls & all in on his tackles, probably have to wait his turn though as Morris will probably get a gig as a defensive pressure midfielder.

Good luck to him, I notice a bit of Ranga in there, hope he's better than Steve O'Dwyer, PLUS hope the PB gets a go and doesn't sit in the Maggos for 3 years.

Welcome to the team kid! Fingers crossed you're the next Miles! And why shouldn't you be? Clearly going to be a few of these guys at GWS and maybe GC who can't get a game.

Now it's time to play Thomas too, and I mean that genuinely.

Miles, Thomas and Townsend all inside mids.
