Shai Bolton
The Tigers have been well aware of Bolton's speed and skill, but they have been waiting to see his defensive game reach a level that warrants consistent selection. His pressure efforts against Essendon didn't register on the stat sheet, but he was a menace in the forward line, making opponents nervous and swooping at the right time. He had a clear chemistry with Jack Riewoldt, despite having played only six games, and his three goals were just reward for effort. Should now be the frontrunner for round one selection as Daniel Rioli's replacement. - Nathan Schmook

LOCK BOLTON IN

OUT Daniel Rioli, in Shai Bolton.

How blessed is Richmond coach Damien Hardwick that he can replace one high promising small forward with another potential star of the future?

Rioli was the only major injury casualty from last year’s euphoric Grand Final, breaking his foot.

But waiting in the wings is another young man dripping in X-factor, with Bolton’s growing bag of tricks about to be seen more regularly on the big stage.

The teenager works hard, tackles, has sped to burn and as we saw last night, can thread set shots from the boundary line.

Hardwick said he was excited about Shai Bolton's contribution to the team this pre-season, but the small forward was yet to secure his place for round one as Daniel Rioli's replacement.

"Has he done enough? That's the question we'll look at," the coach said.

"His pressure last week was very good. This week it probably wasn't quite to the level of last week.

"He is lively and he is one of those players that trust me as a [defender] you wouldn't like to play on him. You are never quite sure whether he is going to jump on your head or get you at ground level. He's an exciting prospect."

"He'll train well the next couple of weeks and put his hand up for selection round one. Whether he's got that spot, time will tell."

Preseason wrap

Breakout contender:
After showing glimpses in six senior games and looking like the best player afield to quarter time in last year's VFL Grand Final, Shai Bolton is ready to become a regular as a damaging forward who take games by the scruff of the neck when he gets hot. His three goals and relentless pressure applied in JLT1 will do his senior chances no harm.

Young forward halts contract talks with the Tigers

Promising Richmond youngster Shai Bolton has put his contract talks on hold until the end of the season, according to the Herald Sun.

Bolton shares the same manager as Dustin Martin in Ralph Carr, and while Martin also halted contract discussions, it is believed this was a decision made by Bolton and not a tactic used by his manager.

The Western Australian is happy at Richmond with the support he is receiving from the club and he has settled well into Melbourne.

A number of players from the same draft year as Bolton have already signed lengthy contract extensions.

2016 number one pick Andy McGrath has signed on with Essendon as have Hugh McCluggage, Jakes Bowes, Ben Ainsworth and Griffen Logue with their clubs.

The 2016 number 29 draft pick was not apart of Richmond’s premiership team.

But with the Tigers relying on their small forwards and Daniel Rioli still sidelined with a foot injury, Bolton is getting plenty of opportunity at AFL Level.

The rest of Richmond’s stars are contracted though Reece Conca and Nathan Broad are still waiting for discussions to begin on their futures at Punt Road.

Have heard that the Dockers think Bolton is very gettable from Richmond.

Given the small forwards on our list, a first round pick in this years draft would be a great get for us.

Maybe we should all watch the game again. If Bolton, who is younger and less experienced of the three was hopeless against Adelaide then the other two were clearly worse than hopeless. Bolton was also the only one to impact the scoreboard.
The club that keeps giving.
