Thats cheap. If we get him for 3 years for say $2 million ie. 650k in year one, 650k in year 2 and $700k in year 3 we have done well.

Shai Bolton is one of the key signatures at Punt Road this season, with the midfielder in no rush to re-sign according to his manager Ralph Carr.

The 22-year-old starred in the absence of Dustin Martin last Friday night, booting three goals and picking up 22 disposals in the win over the Western Bulldogs.

Nick Dal Santo believes Bolton could command upwards of $700,000 from a rival club.

“I reckon if you’re trying to get him out of Richmond, you’re paying him more than 500k or 600k,” Dal Santo told Fox Footy.

“That (700k or 800k) is not out of the question because you look at even players in the last couple of years that you think, are they really worth that?”

Despite the money potentially on offer, Garry Lyon believes it’s in Bolton’s best interests to stay at Richmond.

Lyon and Tim Watson discussed the situation on SEN Breakfast.

Watson: “What’s the best thing for Shai Bolton to do?”

Lyon: “Stay. Why, would you go?”

Watson: “Dusty’s already demonstrated that, has he not?”

Lyon: “He had a look around (before staying), Dusty.”

Watson: “He got the money too. That money probably isn’t available to Shai Bolton and he doesn’t deserve as much money. I would say he would have to take significant unders to stay at Richmond.”

Lyon: “But that’s what happens isn’t it? Through all those great Hawthorn sides, the great Geelong sides, they all took way unders to stay to be part of something really special and I guess that’s what’s going to confront him now.”

Bolton has averaged 22 disposals per game so far this season playing on-ball and pushing forward.

Despite the likely interest of either Fremantle or West Coast, Richmond coach Damien Hardwick remains confident in retaining Bolton, but admits there is some concern.

“I’m always uncomfortable with good players out of contract,” Hardwick said on Wednesday.

“We love Shai and I’m pretty sure he loves us as well.

“That’ll just take a bit of time to work through. Contract discussions are always like that, but we’re very confident in what we’ve created here, that players want to stay and players want to come.”

With a tight purse likely strapping Richmond of offering Bolton a lucrative deal to match potential offers from rival clubs, Hardwick said he would hold no resentment in players opting for a more favourable offer.

“I don’t begrudge players for looking for different situations that might afford them some luxuries in life, that’s the game we’re in. We understand that.

“Ideally I’d love to keep Shai Bolton a Tiger and I’m pretty sure he’d like to stay one as well.”

Hardwick drew comparisons to some of the greater clubs of the past 20 years, like Hawthorn and Geelong, in how individual sacrifices can be the root of a premiership winning side.

“A number of players have signed for less,” he added. “That’s a reality, they could get a lot more money somewhere else.

“It’s the thing you give up to stay at a successful club. We’ve seen it over a number of years at other other clubs that have been really successful.

“If you want to play in success, you’ve got to give up something, and generally it’s monetary.”

Bolton has taken his game to new heights in 2021, averaging 21.89 disposals, 5.29 inside 50’s, 4.71 clearances and one goal per game.

Richmond’s rising WA star Shai Bolton set to knock back big money deals to remain at Tigers

Young West Aussie Shai Bolton is set to knock back offers of up to $800,000 a year to remain loyal to Richmond and commit to a new deal.

As speculation continues to swirl about where the kid from Katanning will play in 2022 ramps up, Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph says Bolton wants to stay a Tiger.

“Shai Bolton will stay at the Richmond Football Club, but it will take sacrifice and it will come late in the season,” Ralph said on Fox Footy.

“Deals likely to be offered to him for up to $800,000 a season.

“He‘ll need to sacrifice and his manager Ralph Carr will need to do the same as he did with Dustin Martin, which is bridge the gap in those massive offers with the commercial opportunities that come with big marks like tonight on the big stage for a big club like Richmond.”

Bolton is WA football royalty as the son of former Docker and Peel Thunder great Darren Bolton and the nephew of Sandover Medallist Allistair Pickett.

But he was overlooked by both Fremantle and West Coast in the 2016 AFL Draft, before being taken by Richmond with pick 29.

The Dockers instead went with Griffin Logue at pick 8 while the Eagles chose Daniel Venables with pick 13.

Bolton is one of four West Aussies out of contract at Richmond at the end of the year, alongside Pinjarra local Kamdyn McIntosh, former Lake Grace junior Liam Baker and troubled Sydney Stack.

Last month, Bolton’s manager Ralph Carr fuelled speculation the 22-year-old dual premiership player would consider rival offers when he said no new deal would be signed during the season.

But speaking to the Herald Sun in March, Carr said he expects Bolton to stay in black and yellow for 2022 and beyond.

“My feeling is he won’t move from Tigerland. He will stay,” Carr said.

“He is a ripping kid and why would he want to go anywhere else.

“He has only just turned 22 and his breakout year is probably this year.

“He is a special player. He is just a beauty.”

Bolton is having a breakout 2021 season, averaging almost 22 disposals and a goal a game.

On Friday night, he put forward a ripping mark of the year contender in Richmond’s 63-point loss to Geelong.
