MIXED BAG FOR BOLTON

Shai Bolton was a big part of the highs and lows of a challenging afternoon for his Tigers.

The livewire did plenty of eye-catching things and was particularly prominent in the second-quarter comeback with 10 of his 22 disposals and a series of dashes that created yellow-and-black scoring chances.

Bolton ended the game with two goals, eight score involvements, seven inside 50s, five clearances and more than 600 metres gained - but also seven turnovers, including six to half-time.

Turnovers have been an unfortunate theme of Richmond’s start to the season, particularly their opener against Gold Coast, so Bolton and co. will look to tidy things up quickly.

Shai Bolton (Richmond)

“He was just absolutely brilliant.

“It’s a tough ground to play on and everything he touched turned to gold.

“It hasn’t quite come together for him this year, he’s been really wasteful with his ball use and he’s squandered a few opportunities in front of goal, but not yesterday.

“He was a freak.”

I know he kicked some miraculous goals on the weekend and the media is really pumping him up - but if he could just eradicate the stupid impulsive brain farts .

I’m still fuming at that second quarter brain implosion where he butchered a certain goal at a critical time .

Shai always leaves so many goals on the table .

Ironically that was from being too unselfish rather than being a show pony as is usually the case...... :shh

"You can't be giving excuses for your players when they're blowing up at teammates and then after the game you say, 'He showed great leadership.'"

Why @kanecornes says Adem Yze needs a 'harder edge' after his defence of Shai Bolton.

However, their loss has been further soured by news that mercurial forward-midfielder Shai Bolton will miss at least next Saturday’s clash with Geelong after entering concussion protocols.

Bolton, who was backing back in a fourth-quarter marking contest, collided heavily with oncoming teammate Mykelti Lefau.

The impact of Lefau, compounded by a heavy landing, left Bolton dazed and in need of medical attention. He was ruled out of the remainder of the game shortly after.

Speaking post-game, Yze confirmed one of his biggest stars would be a certainty to miss at least one match.

“Yeah, unfortunately (he will miss),” he told reporters.

“I was hoping that it might be just a bit of whiplash or a knee in the back, in the shoulder, but (I) just spoke to the doctor now — he’s had a concussion test and he’ll go into the protocols.

“Losing him at that time of the game as well (hurt). He was looking really dangerous every time he was around the ball, this game (Dreamtime at the ‘G) means so much to him, as we know, so that was unfortunate.”

His prime will most likely be wasted when we have a steep drop off in a few years unless we find a way to bring lots of young talent in. I don’t want to trade him but if west coast offered 2 first rounders or a player and a first rounder I’d think about it.

2 years later and the drop off is here

Shai Bolton provided a clear reminder of just how damaging a player he can be with his performance for Richmond against Fremantle at Optus Stadium last Saturday night.

The exciting dual premiership Tiger, playing predominantly forward, finished the match with 16 disposals, a team-high seven marks, a game-high five marks inside 50, four inside-50s, an equal AFL career-high four goals, team-high seven score involvements and 335 metres gained.

Bolton’s display against the Dockers broke a recent lean run on the goal front for him. He had scored only one goal in his previous three games.

“Shai knows that he’d been down for the last couple of weeks. His work-rate today was back to where we know he can get to,” Richmond coach Adem Yze said in his post-match press conference.

“He played a bit more forward today and didn’t get as much exposure in the midfield, but he’s had ample shots on goal and probably could have kicked five or six.

“He was part of the reason why we were still in the game.

“It was a terrific effort from him.”

Have to go back to Mitch Morton in 2009 when the last non-key forward won our leading goalkicker award.

It's only happened 4 times in the past 40 years.

                       Goals   Year
Mitch Morton       41     2009
Matthew Rogers   37     2000
Nick Daffy           45     1995
Stephen Ryan      28     1990

Shai likely to be the one this year.

Bolton  24 goals
Lefau   14
Mansell 12
Baker   10
Balta     10
Martin   10

Ah, if I was list manager I would be advising him to say this. Creates urgency on the WA clubs.

Will add a zero or a year to Shai’s contract
Will take a West Joke from a top 10 to possibly their number 3 pick to secure him.

“Win win shai”
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

I'd want 3 for Bolton minimum.

Otherwise I'd be offering Baker + Bolton + trade some of our later picks to Academy/FS clubs to get another top10 to send to WCE for Reid.

With Dusty, Lynch, Prestia, Grimes etc all coming OOC we have serious money to offer him a front-loaded contract.
