The Tigers have another week before their younger players return to training, having yet again dodged a long list of off-season surgeries.

REIGNING premier Richmond has hit the track as a whole playing group for the first time since September's triumph.

While the first-to-fourth years returned last week, Monday marked the start of pre-season for the entire squad, including the five new draftees.

The only players not to take the field were livewire Sydney Stack (returned to Western Australia for a funeral) and Jack Higgins, who is on a modified, part-time program as he recovers from brain surgery.

A handful of senior players were on light programs, including All Australians Bachar Houli, and Dylan Grimes (left wrist clean-out), best and fairest Dion Prestia, preliminary final hero Jack Graham (shoulder reconstruction) and Toby Nankervis (adductor).

Nick Vlastuin is easing back into training after returning from a visit to India with club partner World Wildlife Fund, while youngsters Shai Bolton, Jake Aarts and Luke English also worked away from the main group.

Star defender Alex Rance was in the main group, after missing the vast majority of 2019 with a ruptured ACL.

The main squad took part in a series of skill and agility drills in small groups, before changing to full-ground ball movement work.

The Tigers added Thomson Dow, Noah Cumberland, Will Martyn, Hugo Ralphsmith and Bigoa Nyuon in last week's NAB AFL Draft, and the quintet did a mix of observation and light skill work in the first day at the club.

Ch 7 and 9 news said Higgins did full training today and is making steady progress on his way back from brain surgery.

They said Dusty and the rest of the squad looked sharp.

Houli away from the main group along the boundary on light duties.

Dusty and big names return as Richmond hits track for post-Christmas training

Nick Smart
Herald Sun
January 13, 2020 5:33pm

Richmond’s galaxy of stars were all on the track on Monday as the reigning premier punched on for their first session of 2020.

There was no sign of any premiership hangover as the Tigers’ big names, such as Dustin Martin, skipper Trent Cotchin, Jack Riewoldt and forward Tom Lynch all fronted up for the official start of their 2020 flag defence campaign.

All their stars appeared to be in good condition following their Christmas break.

Lynch’s first pre-season at the club 12 months ago was wrecked by his knee, but the big man is in full training this summer as he pushes towards the start of his second season at Punt Rd.

He said before Christmas he expected his combination with fellow spearhead Riewoldt to grow stronger this year.

Forward Jack Higgins, who underwent two rounds of brain surgery last July and September, was also on the track and trained well amid the hazy conditions.

Ruckman Toby Nankervis was restricted to running laps.

Coach Damien Hardwick was absent from the session but he will return to the club today.

The Tigers’ first game of the year will be against Collingwood in Wangaratta on Sunday March 1 as part of the Marsh Community Series.

Seems we were the only Victorian club to train outdoors yesterday.

North Melbourne moved its scheduled skills session indoors as a result, while Richmond opted to keep its 30-minute training outdoors following assessment of the haze.

Essendon, Geelong, St Kilda, Collingwood, Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, Carlton and Hawthorn continued with planned training indoors after main training sessions on Monday.

Looks like another day of indoor training today.
