Let's face it, we are on the cusp of finishing the season in a very strong position to launch an assault on the premiership.

What better news to be able to roll out as a motivator than Dusty resigning with the club, especially if we have an unexpected loss along the way which might shake the confidence of players and or supporters.

Watson lauds Ralph Carr for Dusty management

Former Essendon skipper Tim Watson has praised Dustin Martin’s manager Ralph Carr for the way he has handled the star Tiger’s long-drawn out contract talks this year, believing he has got the best deal for his client and his club.

SEN news breaker Sam McClure believes that terms between Martin and Richmond have been agreed to, with only a signature on paper the barrier to the 26-year-old committing to the Tigers long-term.

The reported seven-year deal is touted to be worth at least $1.2 million per season, news which Watson called great for both player and club.

While Carr has attracted disapproval from Richmond supporters in particular for reportedly shopping Martin around to rival clubs, Watson says his guidance in advising the midfielder to wait as long as possible before signing a new deal was wise.

He believes Martin’s exceptional 2017 season, one that is likely to see him win the Brownlow Medal this year, has forced the Tigers to up the ante on their contract offer.

“I know Ralph Carr attracts a lot of criticism from people, but you would have to say that if your job as a manager is to get the best deal you possibly can for your player and it ends up being a seven year, 1.2 to 1.3 million dollar contract, then he has done an unbelievable job for Dustin Martin,” Watson said on SEN Breakfast.

“Had Dustin Martin’s form gone off in some way, then you would say OK, the handling of this has been incorrect, but he knows his client. His client has responded beautifully, magnificently.

“In fact, had he signed him at the beginning of the year, he might have got an offer of $800,000 or $900,000 a year over five or six years. Now he is going to get significantly more and larger contract because of the way he has gone about it.”
