AFL finals: Richmond Tigers with plenty of depth after VFL successGreg Denham

4 September 2017Richmond will have the added benefit of having their VFL team in the finals for at least another week after an elimination final win on the weekend.
The Tigers have plenty of depth should they need to make changes during the AFL finals series, which starts for them in a qualifying final clash on Friday night at the MCG against Geelong, a game expected to attract close to the venue’s capacity of 100,000.
The Tigers appear almost certain to recall Josh Caddy from the hamstring strain that kept him out of the final two rounds of the season after he trained strongly late last week.
But if there are any other changes required, Richmond, who have played 38 at the elite level this season, could call on any of up to 10 players from their VFL side according to general manager of football operations Neil Balme.
“Most of them did a bit,” Balme said. “Caddy should come in if he trains well this week. But it is helpful that the VFL team is still playing and some of our players are still getting match conditioning.”
Richmond, with a full-strength list to select from other than Nathan Drummond, had a number of players push their case over the next month in the VFL including Ben Griffiths, Shai Bolton, Reece Conca, Sam Lloyd, Jayden Short, Corey Ellis, Connor Menadue, Anthony Miles and Shaun Hampson.
“We’ve been lucky to have had a full list to pick from, but that can change,” Balme said.
Midfielder Miles was outstanding in the VFL elimination final win against Collingwood, where Conca and Griffiths got in valuable match conditioning after being off the scene since earlier in the season with injuries.
Miles had 37 possessions, including 19 contested and nine clearances.
The emergence late in the season of first-year midfielder Jack Graham, forward Jacob Townsend, who has booted 11 goals in two games, Nathan Broad and Alex Markov has kept others out of the senior team.
Teenager Graham, who has made 18 tackles in his two games, has been solid after spending the first three months of the season on the long-term injury list recovering from a fractured ankle and then gaining match fitness in the VFL.
