Read a good debate about him on another site and it made me stop and think.

Most of us keep pushing the line that he is an AFL inside mid. I keep pushing that barrow but maybe i have it wrong.

The question being asked, is he an AFL INSIDE MID The correct answer would be no, not yet anyway.
The vast majority of his career possesions are uncontested.

The thinking was he might become one but he is definately not an inside mid at this point and i agree.
We have played him majority of games H/B - WING - FWD. So right now he is not and hasn't been an afl inside mid.

Let me explain my thinking here.
For me your inside mids win plenty of contested ball and get heaps of possesions .when they dont get it they  tackle and pressure their opponent.the good ones also manage their fair share of clearances they can't always win first ball.

Atm Jack goes at 14.16 disposals a game. cp 4.57 up 9.95.
He has had 20 or more disposal,s to me that would be a pass mark 10 times. That says he can at times get a bit of ball but it is not often.
He has had 7 or more contested possesions, again for an inside mid a pass mark imo,  11 times averaging just 4.57 a game.
He has had more than four clearances just twice and averages just 1.61 a game.
He has had 5 or more tackles a game 9 times and averages just 1.91 a game.

I think the stats back up the notion that right now he is not and has not been an AFL inside mid, Not yet anyway.
The question has to be asked with Hopper and Taranto will he be given the opportunity to regularly play the role?

Question- do you rate Tom Atkins from the Cats? If so, why? If not, why not?
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Good post, given the way we have recruited i'd say no & he'll play the same roles he has been for a while now.

What did we all think of Ross' return game?

23 disposals (11k, 12h, 4c, 19u, 78.3% eff.)
8 marks
2 tackles
3 clearances (1 centre clearance)
1 intercept
322 metres gained
2 score involvements
1 goal
1 free for
66% time on ground

Decent in the first and last, quiet in between. Not overly impactful but great goal late. Certainly not the worst

He was bought in to play the Hopper role and it didn't work

I am generally surprised he had 23 disposals as I barely noticed him apart from the goal and the short dinky kicks

He's quite a nice shot for goal tbh.

I've ruled him out for ever being a decent mid, wing or anything.

Could he be of any use up forward?

That shot in goal was a ripper. I didn’t think he have a chance to make the distance. But he played on, made the angle tighter and flushed it. Problem is, he is slow, struggles to put his head over it and I’m not sure you can get more than a cigarette packed under his feet when he leaps for a mark.

If it was the Hopper role then he failed dismally. 4 C/P and 2 tackles sheesh!!!!. 3 clearances okay i suppose.

I was going to ask why we played him outside again now i don't have to.

Fair dinkum everyone into Cotchin but they are into the wrong bloke.

If Ross can't get a game in our depleted line-up then surely he'll be looking elsewhere to get some gametime and won't be a Punt Rd in 2024.

Great point MT although you might argue his role isn't where we have injuries…
