Brandon Ellis had to be replaced as the whipping boy for our supporters. Hope he does well but not expecting much for the next 2 or 3 years.

Needs to call himself Tom instead of Thomson. If he wants to be a Thomson he can go play for Melbourne and hang out at the snow. We are a working class club kid. We aint got no room for blokes with fancy hoi polloy names.

The kid needs to get some tatts and shave his head. Instead of the current look hes got. Toughen up kid thatll get you in the good books with the supporters.

Reminds me of Edwards good hands to.

Was about to post the same thing, georgies.

Lightly-framed as a youngster, good by hand with both the left and right, can win the ball and explode out of traffic, and can play as a HF which he will early days until he matures and moves into the midfield. Sounds very much like Dow is seen by the Club as Edwards' long-term replacement when Sheds eventually retires.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Edwards took many years to become the player he is now and we do have a couple of years to spend on these young guys with the depth we have now. It was the first thing I thought of when I watched the video of young Thomson.

Thomson's midfield game will be improved by following guys like Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin.

"That's probably the best part about it I reckon; There's some superstars at the club and to be able to train and potentially play with them is unreal."

Thomson also said hearing his name get read out while watching the draft on the television was a huge surprise.

"It's a pretty surreal feeling. I was just sitting at home last night, not really expecting anything and when my name got called out to be a Tiger … it's an honour really, considering the amount of success [they've had] in the past year and the years before that," he said.

"A week prior I spoke to a few of them [Tigers recruiters]. They came [to my] home and had a bit of an interview there. That was good to speak to them. Prior to that I hadn't had much to do with them so even going into draft night I still wasn't very sure because I hadn't spoken to them too much."

Thomson didn't realise that his Tigers were playing Carlton in round one of 2020. He said if he got a game it "would be interesting" to play his brother.

What rock have you been hiding under Ramps our club has long moved away from that type of socialist rhetoric we now are a club who embraces all walks of social levels.

Some of our current players went to private schools, should we give give Trent his marching orders because he went to Penleigh Grammar?

Jack Reiwoldt went to St Vergils in Hobart does that preclude him from becoming a Richmond man?

I thought that type of class warfare died out in the 70's.

Tiger Thomson ‘couldn’t be happier’

As the first round of this year’s 2019 NAB AFL Draft took place at Marvel Stadium on Wednesday night, Thomson Dow was watching the action with his family over 300 kilometres away at their Swan Hill home.

Anticipating he would be chosen in a later round, Dow said he “wasn’t really expecting much”.

But when Richmond had its turn at pick 21, the final selection of the night, it was his name that was called out.

“I was at home with mum, dad, two of my brothers and my grandad,” he said.

“When Richmond picked me up, it was very exciting. I’m over the moon and still can’t believe it’s happened.

“I’m pumped. Based off the success (Richmond has) had in the past few years, it’s the place to be, so I couldn’t be happier to be at Tigerland.”

At 182cm and 72kg, the explosive midfielder has impressed with his clean, creative hands and excellent decision-making.

He represented Vic Country in every game at the National Championships this year, averaging 18 disposals per game.

His trademark agility saw him finish third in the agility test at the AFL Draft Combine, and that, paired with his pace, has quickly become the cornerstone of his game.

“I like to use my agility and pace where I can and use that to burst away from stoppages and from my opponent and get inside-50s and be as damaging as I can,” he said.

It’s been a whirlwind 24 hours for the new Tiger, who travelled with his family to Melbourne on Thursday morning to begin his new chapter.

It wasn’t the first time the Dow family have experienced an AFL draft first-hand.

Dow’s older brother Paddy was drafted by Carlton at pick three in the 2018 draft. Paddy, now 20, has proven a constant pillar of support for Dow throughout his football journey.

“He’s been pretty good with me in terms of just advice and communication things and if I ever have any questions,” Dow said.

“He’s always there to speak to because he’s already done it all in the past two years.”

Dow, who turned 18 in October, packed up his life two years ago to attend boarding school at Geelong Grammar and pursue football opportunities.

The resulting maturity he developed over those years is set to hold him in good stead as he prepares for his next big move.   

“It makes the move easier because I’ve already done it before,” he said.

“Being in Melbourne and closer to my mates and brothers is awesome and I’m stoked.”

Dow said he was thrilled to be following in the footsteps of fellow Bendigo Pioneers product and Richmond superstar Dustin Martin.

“He’s one of the best in the league so to be playing alongside him is an absolute honour,” Dow said.

Richmond came into the second night of the draft having selected lively midfielder Thomson Dow with pick No.21 in the opening portion.

They had been keen on speedster Sam Philp, before a pick swap between Port Adelaide and Carlton saw the Blues swoop with pick No. 20.

"We rated Thompson higher, we were really happy to have Thompson fall where he fell. We think he's a really exciting player, a really exciting person from a great family, so we're rapt to get him."

Richmond’s National Recruiting Manager Matthew Clarke on Dow:

On Wednesday night we recruited Thomson Dow at pick 21. A midfielder with clean creative hands and excellent decision-making. And having only turned 18 in October, you must see a lot of upside in him?

"Absolutely, we’re pretty excited with Thomson. He’s played footy with Bendigo Pioneers and Geelong Grammar. Probably not a lot of games in the pathway but we think he's got significant upside. He has got great hands, we liken him to one of our current players, Shane Edwards…We’re really happy to have him."

He also seems to have an excellent character, one that will fit in well at Richmond, and also a lot of maturity having spent the last few years at boarding school pursuing his football.

"He’s been at Geelong Grammar for the last couple of years…He comes from a great family. His older brother Paddy we really rate as a player and he’s going to be a really good player for Carlton, but we are looking forward now to seeing what Thomson can do for us."

Dow: How new Tiger compares to Blue brother

New Richmond recruit Thomson Dow swore he had no idea who his new AFL club’s Round 1 opponent next year was.

When told it was Carlton, which is home to his older brother Paddy, Row replied with a grin:

“If that pans out for me to get a game, gee that would be interesting.”

Richmond figures have already put it on the No.21 draft pick to aim to make his debut in the Round 1 blockbuster against the Blues.

Coach Damien Hardwick has shown he is not afraid to make selection bombshells, which was evident when he selected Marlion Pickett to make his debut in this year’s Grand Final.

While a draftee immediately breaking into the reigning premier’s side appears unlikely, the 182cm midfielder said he was just looking forward to rubbing shoulders with some of the game’s biggest names.

“That’s the best part about it I reckon, there are some superstars at the club,” Dow said.

“To be able to train and potentially play with them is unreal in itself, so that would definitely make me a better player and improve my footy.

“It’s a pretty surreal feeling.

“I was just sitting at home last night not really expecting anything and when my name was called out to be a Tiger, it’s an honour really considering the amount of success they’ve had.

“I’m honoured to join Tigerland.”

Dow, who hails from Swan Hill and boarded at Geelong Grammar, said having his older brother Paddy as a sounding board would help his transition to the life of an AFL footballer.

“I think the way we play is similar, but there are a lot of differences as well,” Dow said.

“He’s a very solid, contested player and he’s probably got me in that area, but I feel like I could be more damaging on the outside as well as having that balance.”

Dow, 18, said he could not wait to meet his new teammates at Punt Rd.

“I spoke to Dimma this morning on the car ride over here,” he said.

“He sent his congratulations and he was good, and I spoke to a few of the boys as well.

“Some of them messaged me, which was reassuring.”
