Uh Melbourne? How do they work that one out?
Tom Browne making stuff up but it was meant to be a list of contending sides that Buddy would want to go to. Problem is why would Buddy want to return to Melbourne (the city) when he left in the first place to escape the 24/7 fishbowl down here?

Tiger71 from BF reckons we are interested in Darcy Fogarty at the Crows.

He also is claiming Hopper is the one most likely from the Giants. Taranto wants too much money and Green wants to remain at GWS (caveat depends on the new coach).

Dusty and Baker aren't going anywhere.

Prefer Tom Green and Taranto but it should be a wait and see about Hopper given his knee. He had off-season surgery over last summer and when he played round 1 the knee swelled up and he required further surgery for what was a new injury. He's finally returning this week for GWS. Let's see how he goes and whether his knee holds up over the remaining 6 weeks.

Sounds like he just wants money haha

I don't see how Dees could afford him, even if Jackson leaves (I don't think he's on big money at the moment).
Petracca, Oliver both on big contracts worth at least 800-900/year. May and Lever on 700ish? Gawn must be on plenty.

Don't see how they could rustle up 700+ for Buddy.

Yep the Dees have got a salary cap squeeze. More likely to lose a couple of players. Angus Brayshaw is one that gets mentioned as poachable.

Tom Browne on 7news couldn't resist going the obvious click-bait.

If Tom Browne wanted to be genuine he would have had Geelong as the most likely landing place for a 35 year old player

RANKING ALL 17 TEAMS BY THEIR FIT FOR LANCE FRANKLIN IN 2023

By Nic Negrepontis
SEN
14 July 2022

10. Richmond

If Jack Riewoldt retires, then sure, maybe, and the Tigers are in their premiership window, but this still doesn’t seem like a great fit.

...

1. Melbourne

Melbourne needs a spearhead inside 50. They are right at the peak of their powers where buying one or two years of Buddy could lead to a flag.

The Dees are clearly at the top of this list.

JACOB HOPPING OUT OF GWS?

AFL Media is reporting that a clutch of Victorian clubs are interested in recruiting GWS star midfielder Jacob Hopper.

Hopper can become a free agent at the end of next year — referred to as ‘pre agents’ — but the Giants have been known to trade out players early in order to maximise compensation.

For instance, in 2018, GWS traded out Dylan Shiel to Essendon for a pair of first-round draft picks, rather than wait another year for Shiel to depart as a free agent and receive just the one selection from the AFL.

Geelong and Richmond are believed to be the frontrunners for Hopper’s services if the Giants academy product decides to start afresh elsewhere.

Essendon have shown interest in Hopper in the past, and would likely do so again, especially considering their need for big-bodied midfielders to bolster their on-ball brigade.

A knee injury has restricted Hopper to just one game this year, all the way back in Round 1, but he is building towards a senior recall in the coming weeks.

----------------------------------

HEPPELL FUTURE IN LIMBO

Essendon captain Dyson Heppell is still yet to receive a contract offer from the Bombers for the 2023 season amid growing rival interest, according to AFL Media.

Rival clubs are believed to be interested in recruiting the 30-year-old for next year if he can’t come to terms on a new deal with the Bombers.

Three clubs at head of the line for Giants star

Jake Niall
The Age
July 14, 2022 — 7.30pm

Geelong, Richmond and Adelaide are the clubs in contention for Jacob Hopper should the talented midfielder seek a trade from the Giants.

While Hopper is contracted for next year, rival clubs and industry sources believe he could be traded this October – a scenario believed more likely if his teammate Tim Taranto re-signs with GWS, placing further pressure on the Giants’ ever-tight salary cap.

Sources say that Hopper is a priority for Geelong, who have a proven record of landing players, with Richmond and Adelaide the other clubs that are in the running if Hopper leaves GWS one year before his free agency season.

The Cats and Tigers are in a similar position in that both clubs will have veterans departing from their ranks in the next two seasons and thus have both spots opening up in their midfields and some salary cap room. The Tigers, of course, would have a massive salary cap gain if their superstar Dustin Martin was traded given he is contracted at close to $1.2 million over 2023 and 2024.

Taranto is also being pursued by Collingwood, Richmond and a number of other clubs, with the key difference that he is out of contract. Hopper is recovering from knee surgery and has not played since round one, having had an excellent season in 2021 when he made the All-Australian squad of 40. Taranto has indicated that he will wait until a new coach is hired by the Giants before making any call on his future.

The Magpies are not believed to be in the running for Hopper, according to well-placed sources. Their prospects and need to acquire a midfielder would be enhanced if their own star Jordan De Goey exits as a free agent, earning a compensation draft pick and opening up salary cap space.

Another consideration for GWS will be the coaching appointment and the position that the coach takes on whether – subject to salary cap constraints – they can accommodate Hopper and/or Taranto on a playing list that is heavily skewed towards midfield talent. GWS already have Tom Green, another highly capable inside midfielder, on their list, while Josh Kelly, Stephen Coniglio and Lachie Whitfield are players best suited to midfield roles who are contracted on close to $1 million a season for long terms. Finn Callaghan, drafted at pick No.2 in 2021, is another talented midfielderwho will need ground time.

GWS have been in conversations with four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson, in which both parties are sounding one another out about the coaching position, Clarkson having met with GWS football chief Jason McCartney and spoken with their chief executive David Matthews. Clarkson will also be sounded out by North Melbourne about the now vacant senior coaching position at Arden St.

GWS also are a chance to lose young midfielder Tanner Bruhn, who is out of contract in only his second season and exploring his options. While Bruhn is from the Geelong area and played with the Geelong Falcons as a junior, it would be harder for the Cats to land both he and Hopper should the latter nominate them as his preferred destination.

As a 2023 free agent, Hopper would have the opportunity to seek a new club and a substantial contract next year, or to remain with the Giants, who say he is expected to be back playing soon.

Hopper signed a two-year extension last September, meaning he is contracted for 2023.

“Jacob’s name does get mentioned most years for whatever reason, whether he’s in and out of contract,” GWS football boss Jason McCartney said.

“Jacob’s one of those classic examples, a bit like Tim [Taranto] at the moment, he was out of contract all of last year … Jacob didn’t re-sign until post-season.

“He’s got next year to run on that contract, then he becomes a free agent.”

Would be happy with hopper provided his knee is ok. Would be thrilled with Taranto + Hopper. Pretty much rejuvenates our midfield in one offseason.

FIVE potential landing spots for Matt Crouch

Jack Javanovski
zerohanger.com
July 19, 2022 - 4:29PM

1. Richmond

The eighth-placed Tigers are rumoured to be interested in GWS midfielders Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper, and the club also has links to youngster Tom Green, as his grandfather, Michael, was a four-time premiership Tiger.

However, in the case that Richmond misses out on all three Giants (assuming they pursue one or more of them this off-season), Crouch could present as a worthy contingency plan.

With uncertainty surrounding the future of superstar midfielder-forward Dustin Martin, and the growing likelihood that ex-skipper Trent Cotchin and veteran Shane Edwards hang up the boots at season's end, Crouch could provide the Tigers with a much-needed senior presence as well as his ball-winning abilities.

With Crouch under contract next season, a trade would need to be orchestrated between Adelaide and Richmond.

The Tigers currently possess two second-round selections, with the later pick likely to be the necessary compensation for the 2017 All-Australian's services.

2. Gold Coast
3. Geelong
4. Essendon
5. St Kilda

GWS Giants exodus, Jacob Hopper, Tim Taranto, Bobby Hill, Tanner Bruhn expected to leave, contracts, salary cap

Fox Footy
Fox Sports
July 21st, 2022 7:59 pm

Greater Western Sydney is staring down another player “exodus”, with four expected to leave the club in the upcoming trade period, according to Nine reporter Sam McClure.

Tim Taranto, Jacob Hopper, Bobby Hill and Tanner Bruhn have all been floated as candidates to leave the Giants, but salary cap issues and a willingness from the club to “reset” amid a mini-rebuild should reportedly see all four leave.

Of the quartet, midfielders Taranto and Hopper are the most valuable. Richmond and Collingwood are among the Victorian clubs have shown interest in Taranto, while Adelaide, Richmond and Geelong have been linked to Hopper.

Small forward Hill requested a trade to Essendon last year but is most likely to join the Magpies, while Bruhn is looking at a move back to Victoria, with the Cats thought to be keen on the Geelong Falcons product.

The issue for the Giants is how well compensated their big names are - partially due to the oft-mentioned ‘retention tax’ northern clubs end up paying to keep their stars.

Stephen Coniglio, Josh Kelly, Toby Greene and Lachie Whitfield combined take up “the best part” of $4 million of the Giants’ $13.5 million salary cap, according to McClure.

Add in Taranto and Hopper if they are re-signed, and defender Nick Haynes who is on a back-loaded contract, and an estimated half of the team’s cap is already gone.

“There’s another player exodus. We’ve been here before with the Giants,” McClure said on 3AW’s Sportsday.

“I’ve already talked about Tim Taranto, I think that he won’t be there next year. Jacob Hopper you can now put in that same situation, I believe will leave GWS this trade period with one year left on his deal. And Bobby Hill and Tanner Bruhn I think will both join them out the exit door.

“This is once again salary cap based. We talk a lot about the Giants and the fact they pay their four highest-paid players the best part of $4 million per season - Coniglio, Kelly, Greene and Whitfield. Who are all stars.

“And Nick Haynes ... he’s coming to the last two years of a heavily back-ended contract.

“When you add him in, and Taranto and Hopper - if they were all playing in the same side next year, they’d be taking up $6.5 million of the Giants’ $13 million salary cap. That’s half.

“That’s not as much of an issue if you’re top four, if you’re playing in prelims, you’re contending for flags. But in what Matthew Lloyd believes to be a bottom four side at the moment, it of course is going to be an issue.”

Taranto, who is out of contract but not a free agent until 2024, and Hopper would both be worth first-round picks in return according to Brownlow medallist Gerard Healy.

While Taranto isn’t desperate to leave, the Giants believe trading him and Hopper and getting high picks back for them could be healthy for their future.

“One (reason they would trade him) is about cash, one is about seeing this change in coach, potential change in assistant coaches and then the football department, as the chance of a mini-reset,” McClure explained.

“And by trading out Taranto and Hopper, they believe they have the depth of the (players like) Tom Green, Finn Callaghan, Xavier O’Halloran, Lachie Ash, they can make up for those and for those players in their prime, cash in on their trade value.

“If I’m Collingwood, I’m trying to package up my first-round pick this year to get both Hill and Taranto through the door.

“Taranto and Hopper would free up, let’s call it $1.5 million. Hill and Bruhn add a little bit to that so let’s call it $2 million.”

The Magpies’ first-round pick currently sits at pick 14, while Richmond (pick 11), Geelong (pick 18) and Adelaide (pick 3) also own their natural first-rounders.

GWS has “definite interest” in Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy but not at his $1 million salary, and would only want to trade for him if the Magpies would pay some of it.

Grundy does not want to leave Victoria which makes it much less likely he would be involved in a player-driven deal with the Giants.

Jordan De Goey is more likely to leave the Magpies, with the Cats reportedly confirming their interest in the mid-forward.

Collingwood believes Geelong and St Kilda have already met with De Goey.

Of course Geelong have already met with De Goey. Something fishy in the Corio waters with the amount of senior fellas on good dollar there.
