RIEWOLDT READY TO RETURN BUT WILL IT BE THIS WEEK?

By Michael Randall
Herald-Sun
3 July 2019

Jack Riewoldt says he is ready to return to footy after a 10-week injury layoff — but don’t expect it to be this week.

The Richmond superstar says he feels like he is right to go, but isn’t crossing his fingers he’ll get the all-clear from club medicos to return from the PCL injury he suffered in April.

“Probably not,” Riewoldt said on AFL360 when asked if he thought he’d be cleared to play against Gold Coast this week.

“I would like to play, I feel like I’m right to go.

“I want to train strongly on Thursday and give myself the best opportunity and the best chance.

“The decision won't be in my hands — it’ll be in someone else’s and they’re probably a bit more well-equipped, and less, not less emotionally invested, but more strategically invested.”

Riewoldt admitted a cautious approach would be prudent, given the Tigers’ recent rejuvenation and the bigger fish to fry later in the season.

“Caution may be the way (to go) but if I play I’ve put a good little bank of training together that I feel like I’m ready to go,” he said.

“I’ll know more Thursday after I go and have a bit of a run around.

“I’m sick of rehab. I haven’t missed much footy (in my career) and it’s been tricky.”

Riewoldt said the silver lining was the injury layoff gave him more time to spend with newborn daughter Poppy.

“Obviously Poppy came around right at the start when I got injured, so I’ve been able to spend a bit more time at home, which I’ve been very grateful for, but I would like to get back out and start playing,” he said.

Barometer: All eyes on key Tiger

Herald Sun

Richmond superstar Jack Riewoldt will push hard to make his return from knee injury this week in a massive boost to the Tigers’ premiership tilt.

The premiership hero is on track to return against Greater Western Sydney at the MCG on Sunday if he can complete training this week.

Richmond was dealt a savage blow in Round 6 when he hurt his posterior cruciate ligament, leaving new recruit Tom Lynch to spearhead the forward line for the past nine games.

But Riewoldt is set to rejoin Lynch against the Giants as the Tigers push hard to secure a top-four berth over the remaining seven rounds.

The Tigers hit hot form demolishing Gold Coast by 92 points at Metricon Stadium on Saturday, delivering the club’s percentage a much-needed boost.

They sit four points outside the top-four and play their last seven games of the season at the MCG.

Football manager Neil Balme said Riewoldt showed positive signs on the training track last week and was likely to take on GWS.

“He was really close to playing on Saturday,” Balme said.

“So as long as he can get through training no worries this week, I expect to be available for selection this weekend.

“At this stage, I will be surprised if he’s not available, but he’s got to do everything this week and pull up OK from that.

“But he’s going well”.

Midfielder Dion Prestia also suffered cramp in the win over the Suns but is expected to be fine for Sunday’s clash against the Giants.

Riewoldt, 30, has booted three goals in his three games so far this season, but will add help lighten the load on Lynch and provide another dynamic marking target.

He has also carved a reputation as one of the most selfless and defensively-minded key forwards in the competition, but will need time to regain some match fitness in the run home to the finals.

While Riewoldt and Lynch experienced some teething issues in their three games together earlier in the season, former AFL coach Rodney Eade said Riewoldt’s return would clearly “make them a better side”.

“Riewoldt will be a real plus for them,” Eade said on Triple M.

“He has got high footy IQ, he is smart, he can get it on the ground, and he can get it up the ground, as Tom Lynch can.

“The beauty with them is that they are so different, but they don’t need to be anchored to the goalsquare either.

“Tom is a very unselfish player, he is team-orientated and Jack has been for a couple of years as well and he has got great agility, mobility, he can rove the pack as well as he marks the ball.

“They will complement each other.”

Lynch booted three goals in the rollicking win over the Suns to sit fourth in the Coleman Medal race with 34 majors before Sunday’s matches.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said bigger challenges lay ahead for the Tigers.

“We’re looking forward to challenging ourselves against one of the better sides of the competition,” Hardwick said.

“We’ll probably get a better understanding of where we’re at but we’re certainly confident our best footy is capable.”

Not 100 per cent fit, but Tiger talisman's ready to return

RICHMOND forward Jack Riewoldt is confident he will make his much-anticipated return in the big clash with Greater Western Sydney at the MCG on Sunday.

The Tigers' co-vice-captain has been sidelined for 10 weeks since the Anzac Day Eve encounter with Melbourne when he sustained a high-grade strain in the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Riewoldt just needs to get through training on Wednesday and Friday to prove his fitness.

"Yeah, I think I'll play. I can't wait. I'm really excited," the 30-year-old told Fox Footy on Tuesday night.

The three-time Coleman medallist revealed he probably fell just one training session short of being selected for the game against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium on Saturday, which Richmond won by 92 points.

However, Riewoldt said his knee still wouldn't be fully recovered for some time yet, but he is now "comfortable" enough to return to the field.

"I don't know whether I'm 100 per cent. I don't think I would get back to 100 per cent again for a while. There's still an element of rehab," he said.

"But I've got to a point now where I feel comfortable and the medical staff feel comfortable for me to go out and play.

"There's always a chance that you go out and you re-injure yourself, as there is with any injury, but in terms of being fit to play I'm right to go."

Riewoldt has played just three games this year in the most injury-plagued of his 13 AFL seasons.

His woes began in the round two loss to Collingwood when he played out the game with three injuries: a small undisplaced fracture and a ruptured ligament in his right wrist, along with a minor strain in the medial ligament in his left knee.

Of course, worse was to come when he returned against the Demons in round six.

The beauty of Riewoldt and Lynch is when one leads and marks on the wing they will then have a decent marking option to look for.

Going to enjoy watching these two in action together

Will be glad to have Jack back, but personally not too sure about him being openly below 100%. Hope he's close to it though.

Elsewise I don't see the harm in a game of VFL. I know he's a superstar and all, and coaches rarely do it, but I think it would be great to give him a gentle run around and let him bag a few/get some confidence.

Kane Cornes having a dig at Jack.

The top 5 AFL figures that hated the media before working in it

By Kane Cornes
SEN
12 July 2019

The relationship between the AFL media and AFL players has been topical this year and it’s more common to see players hitting back at the media.

Prominent examples were an online stoush between Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt and Channel 7 reporter Tom Browne, Luke Hodge hitting out at criticism from Damian Barrett and Todd Goldstein referring to media as a “necessary evil”.

Sometimes, as Tony Jones explains on this week's edition of The Sounding Board, many or a lot of these athletes that call out the media end up relying on it to make a living.

Tony's not prepared to give his top 5, but I am, because it's what I do.

My top 5 AFL figures that hated the media but ended up working in it:

1. Jack Riewoldt

In 2014, Riewoldt banned himself from making any media comment after the media put attention on his omission from Richmond's leadership group.

"This is off my own bat," he said. "If I can't be portrayed the way I want to be portrayed, then I will give it a bit of a miss."

What followed were the comical scenes where Riewoldt tried to hide from the media behind a parked car before scurrying to catch a train all with the goal to escape a few photographers and microphones.

I do find it ironic that Riewoldt is basically the face of Fox Footy’s AFL coverage and he seems to jump behind a camera or a microphone at every opportunity. He appears in promo after promo and is in front of the camera more than any current player in the game.

How ironic.

RIEWOLDT IS BACK

It certainly wasn’t the best game of Richmond spearhead Riewoldt’s glittering career, but the Tigers would have been pleased with his output and also the fact that he got through his first game back in 11 weeks from a knee injury. He accrued 10 touches, three marks and a goal and played a handy support role for Lynch, who was one of the Tigers’ best.

Couldn't had 2-3 but I'm glad he had a run unscathed. Pleasingly with Lynch down in the F50 Jack was back to roaming up the wings and providing support further downfield which was effective. Great to see the champ back, we are a much more dangerous side with him on the field...

Star key forward Jack Riewoldt’s significant scoreboard impact in Richmond’s final home-and-away round victory over Brisbane at the MCG will hold him in good stead leading into the September action.

Riewoldt had kicked nine goals in six games coming into last Sunday’s match, after returning from nearly three months on the sidelines with a knee injury.

He finished the match with 14 disposals, seven marks, including five inside-50, four goals (a game high and his best return for the 2019 season) and seven score involvements.

Jack Riewoldt – 4

The key forward was barely sighted in the first three quarters before becoming more involved in the last term. Missed two set shots on goal, including hitting the post from a snap around his body.
