Am really enjoying seeing Jack play closer to goal. Surprise surprise, he's kicking more big ones. Thankfully our main man Vickery has moved on so Jack doesn't have the be the decoy lead anymore...

Jack's defensive work jumping out of the box

JACK Riewoldt has long been considered one of the AFL's premier forwards, but the star Tiger's contribution to his team's rollicking start to 2017 cannot be underplayed.

As has been typical throughout his 207-game career, Riewoldt's impact on the scoreboard – 14 goals from five games – has been profound.

A six-goal haul against Melbourne in wet and slippery conditions underlined that Riewoldt is playing some of the best football of his career.

The Richmond star is No.1 in the competition for marks inside 50 (20) as he spends more time closer to goal this year, with the Tigers doing a better job of allowing their star players to play with a freedom not seen in past seasons.

However, an area of the in-form forward's game that has been vastly improved is his ability to apply pressure to the opposition.

Pressing up the ground and forcing turnovers in their own forward half is one of the key reasons behind the Tigers' unbeaten start to 2017 and Jack is leading from the front in this area.

Riewoldt has laid 10 tackles inside 50 this season, ranking equal-eighth in the AFL and just four behind competition leader Jeff Garlett from Melbourne.

Interestingly, Geelong's Tom Hawkins – not regarded as a defensive pressure expert – sits in second position on that table.

According to Champion Data, Hawkins is the only key forward to rate elite (in the top 10 per cent of the competition) for goals and tackles this season.

Riewoldt, Sydney's Lance Franklin and Hawthorn's Jarryd Roughead are rated above average (top 35 per cent) for both stats, pointing to the esteemed company the Richmond spearhead is in.

Riewoldt led this statistic after round three with nine tackles inside forward 50 and Richmond forwards coach Justin Leppitsch said it was a key driver in Riewoldt's evolution as a player.

"Jack's really bought into the team aspect of the game," Leppitsch said.

"Not that he wasn't already team orientated but he's really taking that part of his leadership role seriously and that includes the team acts.

"He's been going well."

By comparison, Riewoldt laid 17 tackles inside 50 from 22 games last season.

The star Tiger was added to the club's leadership group after a four-year absence and Leppitsch said that Riewoldt was more aware of setting the tone for his teammates.

The inclusions of youngsters Daniel Rioli, Dan Butler and Jason Castagna into the Tigers' forward line has injected new life into Riewoldt, according to Leppitsch.

"From an offensive perspective, Jack's got the game well covered," Leppitsch said.

"But from a defensive perspective he was looking like the fourth or fifth best player down there at one point.

"He needed to improve to keep up with some of those boys who were setting the scene. He drives that now and he really appreciates that part of the game."

Teammate Dylan Grimes said the defensive improvement in Riewoldt's game had allowed him to play more on instinct.

"One thing he does better than anyone else at the club is to just play the game," Grimes said.

"He's a natural footballer and in big moments and contests he knows exactly what to do with his body, whether that be to take a mark or lay a big tackle."

Noticed Jack has quietly moved to within just 4 goals of the lead in the Coleman. His goals per game average so far this year is his best since 2012.

His game Saturday night was outstanding. Marks, tackles, score involvements and goals. The complete forwards game.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Jack Riewoldt ready for Michael Hurley challenge

JON RALPH,
Herald Sun
27 May 2017

AS kid fresh from Tasmania, Jack Riewoldt’s AFL debut came as Matthew Richardson’s late push on Mal Michael defined the first “Dreamtime” contest.

Riewoldt managed just five touches as Richardson’s classic goal was cancelled out and the Tigers coughed up another late lead.

On Saturday Tigers elder Riewoldt enters Saturday’s Dreamtime at the ‘G clash knowing he must shine to help Richmond snap a four-game losing streak.

Riewoldt’s task is immense — taking on and beating white-hot Essendon defender Michael Hurley.

The Tigers vice-captain has led a more versatile forward line this year but remains the only key position forward of note.

He said this week their series of match-ups actually predated their senior careers, adamant he must run Hurley hard to win their Dreamtime battle.

“He is the bloke I have played on the most. I actually played on him a little bit when I was cutting my teeth at (VFL affiliate) Coburg,’’ Riewoldt said.

“I have played on him a lot and I am very, very respectful of the player he is and he is the guy who has adapted the best after having the year off (from ASADA bans).

“He’s a been a really strong focal point at their footy club.”

Champion Data’s direct match-ups show three concentrated battles — two in 2015 and one in 2011 which all gave the points to Hurley.

Riewoldt kicked only a pair of goals in those encounters, but has an excellent 25.14 from nine games so far.

He told SEN radio this week his summers spent tackling the AFL’s best defender put in him in good stead with a player not too far behind the Richmond no. 18.

“He is very quick and very strong, one of those guys who is very similar to playing on Alex Rance in the intraclubs, so I try to get him up the ground,’’ he said.

“These days footy is never a one-on-one contest, so you won’t see me on him the whole game.

“I was fortunate to debut in the first Dreamtime at the ‘G game and we have won a few late but (they won through) Lloydy’s goal late in the first game.

“They have always been pretty good battles between our footy clubs. In my time at Richmond we have all been around the same path, they have played finals when we have played them.

“It is going to be such an important round not only for us but with the Sir Doug Nicholls indigenous round.”

Riewoldt started the season adamant he wanted to take charge of the forward line with leadership like Rance exhibits across the Tigers back six.

If not for those late losses that mission would have been a resounding success, Riewoldt taking Dan Rioli, Jason Castagna, Dan Butler and Shai Bolton under his wing.

Bolton would have been hailed as the first-game matchwinner had his late goal not been overruled in Saturday’s loss to GWS.

Riewoldt says the club cannot afford to dwell on those losses — the only remedy is to seal the deal in the next tight contest.

“The game is mental, the game is physical. We just need to perform better. We have done a huge amount of mental work and people can read into (those losses) what they want.

“But we feel like we are in a pretty good space and we would have loved to have won the last three games and been a game clear on the ladder but there is no point crying over spilt milk.”

IMV Jack's got the yips because he's not following his normal routine which is a smooth 9 step run up and kicking through the ball. At the moment he's 'stopping' halfway through and stabbing at the footy off a couple of steps. He's also getting too close to the man on the mark which causes the kicker to hook or slice the ball off the boot.

At least he kicked the one in the last quarter when it mattered this week.
