We are suddenly well stocked for young KPPs at the club after going so long being too light on. Previously the pressure and expectations on our young talls has been too much, simply because we didn't have the depth so we absolutely needed them to succeed. Now we are finally being smart about it and adding depth so that there's competition for spots and if a bloke doesn't make it we're not dead in the water.

Silvestor adds that immediate competition for spots, keeping the pressure on Thursty and McGuane. With no Gaspar, Kellaway or Hall, we needed to ensure that we have enough options available to play in defence so that players didn't take their spot for granted.

Also continuing the good form of selecting a player from Coburg each draft. We are already seeing the results with a lot of talented kids coming to the Burgers now as they see a clear path to the AFL.

agree jez, who knows maybe this was exactly what was planned. Everyone thought the Hawkers way of buliding around the spine was the way to go and booed us for building around a midfield.

jury is still out but i think our midfield is gonna be an absolute corker in 2011 add a versatile unpredictable forwardline post richo and things look fantastic.

our midfield is certainly starting to get more skill and run but imo we are another inside mid short before calling it a "corker"

while having more inside mids would be nice, i think people are underestimating the talent we have coming through. Foley, Connors, Tambling, Polo and Collins is one i think will sneak under the radar. Things are looking bright  :gotigers

Whichever way you draft, the main thing for us is to balance the list so in future we are no longer hamstrung with our draft choices trying to fill urgent gaps. We got lucky this year that the best player available at each pick just so happened to coincide with the type of player we needed.

From RFC email:

JARROD SILVESTER:   Rookie Draft pick No.17

Recruited from:  Coburg Tigers
Born: 31/1/85
Height:  191cm
Weight:  89kg

Had an outstanding year at Coburg, which was reflected in his second placing in the club's Best and
Fairest.  Took the VFL's best spearheads on and was rarely beaten in one-on-one contests.  His physical strength and movement skills enable him to play on a variety of opponents. He kept two of the competition's best full-forwards in Nick Sautner (69 goals for the season) and James Podsiadly, goalless, in vital performances for Coburg during the season.  Was rewarded for his fine overall efforts with selection in the VFL's Team of the Year.

ok Silvester was put on our list as a backup to our defence
Thursfield is injured so you would surely think he would be given the chance to play against Melbourne
If we dont play him then comes the question why did we ever draft him in the first place.
Have our recruiters again made the mistake & wasted another draft pick like we did with Kingsley, Patrick Bowden & Trent Knobel with drafting Silvester
is this another setback to drafting a young prospect untried
whats everyones honest opinion on this l think Silverster should come in against Melbourne

Well I think his form at VFL level has been good but we have seen the differnece in the level with some of our other players coming back up and failing (Yes mr Tiv I am looking at you). Think he was drafted as rookie so we would have to put somebody on long term Injured list. I dont know what this means but from what I read Thursty is only going to be one or two weeks so he probably wont go on to long term injury list. He there is probably not a option then.

Good thought TM but we dont have anyone on the Long Term injury list to elevate Sylvester from the rookie list so he can play AFL.  So no he wont be playing next week even if we wanted him to, to try him out.

So while its a good idea, it's not possible at the moment unless someone comes down with an 8+ week injury.

;D these rookie listed players, someone needs to go down take a dive for the future of the club this year

Coughlan, Johnson, should take a fall, Johnson wont be at Richmond next year & while Cogs will be he should go on the long term injury list cause he wont be any good this year & wont play a senior game anyway

Thanks for the laugh with your first line TM.  :lol

One thing re: Johnson, anyone who says we didn't miss him and don't need him is seriously misguided about his value in the middle and to the team in general.  We sorely missed him yesterday.  He may not be part of our future but he is crucial to our present.

Not a fan of the big cat at AFL level. A good VFL player but I cant see him making a successful transition at our club.

I get that feeling too but we wont know for sure unless we give him a go, so if we get the opportunity we might as well.  ..

Id rather we give Rance a go next week against Melbourne and move Gourdis up to Coburg seniors and play him on a wing and at times down back.

thats ok anytime, had a brain fade earlier just looking at the list l got & not having rookies listed beside them
Johnson look he is a guy who takes really hard knocks & blocks but if everytime he is injured or goes missing in action we must create another player who can take on his role. He does make the vital mistake at times & being a captain needs to get the action going onfield with talking & stop slowing play down & calling for possessions from behind the player going forward
l'm surprised Jackson didnot come into the side to replace Captain Smiley, it seems everything is about kicking goals replacing forwards when really we need to make adjustments to the midfield & backline & concentrating on moving the ball out of the backline quicker going long to midfield instead of all this possession overuse crap
Same goes for the Ruck if #1 goes down then Graham must be called upon otherwise if we dont then l cant see any reason having them on the list & also holding back thier careers when they could be playing for some other club AFL or not
Alot of talk about Warnock coming over but seriously we will end up with too much Docker culture l would hate that
Now if l was Richmond President l would force a decision onto Coughlan for the long term injury list to promote a rookie Ruckman & challenge him to the task of taking on Simmonds as #1 Ruckman cause really Simmo is small for a ruckman & counts on his leap but that leap is injured & his timing is suffering & so is the whole team
Then comes the bad coaching who is day dreaming about when the next streaker is coming out  ;D instead of match winning adjustments of game plans B, C, & so on
its time to get tough at Tigerland l see many clubs like Hawthorn with injuries but thier not wilting like us. Wallace said we had the better list but his damaged it with bad coaching & bad skills to the new players
Some of them players will start wanting out to find ultimate glory after watching ottens get rewarded & l cringe at that thought
