Usually beats at a franklin
 Cameron. Jon brown.

I would love to know these mythical KPP that rance can't beat

I think you will find most kp defenders struggle vs Travis cloak when midfield delivery is good and pressure low

I asked claw a while before this season - what are your thoughts on Adelaide journalist ricci naming alexrance as the number one kp defender in the afl (35 or something best or something overall). Looking forward to the reply

Has some interesting things to say, old Clawski, but humility isnt his strong suit.
i disagree. i could go on just about every  threasd here and say i freakin told ya so. yet its only on rare occasions that i do, usually  when posters get churlish.
i could say the same very few posters prepared to concede they were wrong.

most posters chop and change on players that much it is laughable. when they have a poor one the abuse em when they have a good one they are on board.

what have i said about rance over the yrs.  rember i was big on us drafting this bloke at pick 18  so ive seen him right thru from juniors to colts to senors.

to me his strengths are  hes a running defender  who is brave  and committed.  his strenght when defending has been to read the ball in the air and be third man up or cut the ball off in flight which he has done well.  he finds plenty of ball and provides great run.
imo his weakesse has always been kicking to a degree, and when isolated 1v1 hes been poor. im sorry if people dont agree with this nut its what i see.

i actually acknowledged his game against geelong and even went as far to say we have nissed parts of his game of which ive probably not given enough recognition for.

against geelong he played basically loose man in defense.

the melbourne game who did he play on.  they went with two kpds dawes and pederson who imo both had good games. i thought astbury and chaplin had the job on both  rance playing mainly third  man.
against gws who did he play on. they went with just cameron who spent most of his time down back and patton.
ffs hes basically been free to do what hes done and that is run and rebound and give a chop out where needed.
how soon people forget eh the falling over  the mistimed punches the out bodied  the out of position,  but hey hes a richmond champion and as such he doesnt struggle in any area of the game.
has he been good since coming back he sure has but he isnt being asked to account for a direct opponent too often. that will change.

I agree with much of what you say clawski but you could level criticism on just about any backman (or even player) in the league. There is nothing wrong with having weaknesses. Every player has them.  The point is avoiding them and focussing on your strengths.  At the same time over a period you try to improve your weaknesses knowing full well that they usually will never be great, just not quite as weak.
I think Rance has done that to an extent and for that we must give him kudos. Will he get beaten? Of course he will and badly at times.  However, what he has been able to do is improve his game so that those times have got less and less.  At the same time he has kept up his attacking assets including run out of the backline.  He has become one of the best backs in the league and I applaud Rucci for recognising that.  His occasional misdirected disposal often gets over highlighted by the media and he then gets bad press which then obscures the fanatical saves he makes that few others in the league would be able to replicate.  He has been a great acquisition by our club and he continues to mature and improve.
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

Was an absolute howler by Rance that turnover goal but he's still going pretty well.

Damn are we missing Astbury & Vlastuin in defence though.
Dea and and McDonough are very inexperienced and were shown up against the Dons.

Mdno I agree, but I think Dea looked OK.

If Astbury can continue his progression our back line is looking OK long term. Big issues in every other part of the ground.

Jackstar is back!!!

Instead of Alex wasting time making and. posting videos on social media of him sliding in the change rooms earlier this year
Maybe just maybe he could redirect that time on learning his kicking skills on both sides

Rance gets chance to atone

Adam McNicol
afl.com.au
June 6, 2014

FRESH from being involved in the "worst piece of play of the year, if not the decade", Richmond defender Alex Rance will get a chance to atone against one of his favourite opponents on Sunday night.

Rance has played four games against North Melbourne since the introduction of the Official AFL Player Ratings, brought to you by Gatorade.

He has averaged 13.7 player ratings points in those matches, compared to an average of 9.7 against the other 16 clubs.

Rance has had an indifferent 2014 season, with some good form mixed with some poor performances and a foot injury that sidelined him for six weeks.

Nevertheless, he has climbed from 135 to 110 on the player ratings table since the season began (his great form last season is the key factor in his rise).

Another player who will come up against one of his favourite opponents in round 12 is North Melbourne's Drew Petrie.

The big forward, who has been off the boil this year, has averaged 19.4 player ratings points in his past four matches against Richmond.

He has averaged just 11.8 points against the other clubs.

In contrast, Geelong star Steve Johnson is coming up against one of his bogey teams this weekend.

Johnson averages only 7.8 players ratings points when he plays the Blues, yet he averages 14.2 against the other 16 clubs.

Fremantle duo Hayden Ballantyne and Tendai Mzungu have similarly poor records against Adelaide.

Ballantyne averages 5.3 fewer points against the Crows than he does against all his other opponents.

Mzungu averages 5.5 points against Adelaide, whereas he averages 9.9 against the other clubs.

Well, I think these rankings are a load of poo. Rance is just another player who will need to become less important if we hope to improve. Have to give credit to him though, has been tough taking guns most weeks. Punches above his weight admirably

And yet Michelangelo Rucci has ARance as the #1 key defensive player in the game.  :whistle

not sure who this rucci fella is,  hes entitled to his opinion though. that doesnt make him right.  fancy trusting in someone elses opinion rather than your own judgement  :o
the simple point i was making is they talk rance up against north yet one of  the  exact types hes supposed to stop plays his best games against us.you dont see the irony in that. ah well.
