Now, about this kid Rance, I'll be the first to admit that I was not too happy with him initially, as i found him a tad too erratic when handling the ball and making bad decisions in general play. However, in the last couple of seasons, I have become one of his greatest supporters. I think we have a player here who will bleed like Bourkey, run through opponents like Balmey, empower his teammates like Richo, and be just as good in defence as good ol' Clay. We have a winner here.

his year last season wasnt actually very good at all, was actually quite poor and is not even a C+ grade player let alone what you would consider the real deal.

incorrect.

Partly agree but call too early perhaps.  Footy is littered with one season wonders who arrive and depart just as quickly.  Let me say though that I hope that's not the case for Rancey.  His mates love him and whinge about him, so he is very important to the fabric of the team.  Clearly he's worked as hard as anyone, and the harder you work, usually the luckier you get.  His decision making is what has allowed such a big improvement - it gradually became quicker as the team itself improved - it was a confidence thing, of which Rancey usually has plenty as a rule, so when it's down it is noticeable.

His kicking has improved, but was never bad, was just symptomatic of confidence and decisions.  Can't doubt his courage.  In a team of mutes, his chat is critical, one of the few to talk it up, yell on field.  It's why the backline will only get better this season.

Ideally would like to see Rance move to CHB.
Love his run and his kicking and decision making have improved but I think he still struggles a little in the air against taller opponents and can see teams exploiting this. This was highlighted against Franklin the other night.
A good year for him would be to build on last season and cement his current standing as our no1 defender.

Thoguh thought he really struggled against Buddy on Friday night, seemed to be too focused on the man rather than the ball.

But there is a helluva lot of upside  :thumbsup

Agree with Mr Magic. Think Grimes is a better match up for Franklin

Everyone struggles on Buddy. That is why he is arguably the best player in the comp.

yeah, that was my thoughts too willy.

Will be interesting to see whether Rance continues to improve or stagnates/goes backwards this year.

Tigers aiming for top-six finish says Richmond defender Alex Rance
by: Sacha Pisani
From: Herald Sun February 24, 2012 11:58AM

RICHMOND defender Alex Rance says the club has its sights set on a spot in the bottom half of the top eight this season.
The Tigers finished in 12th position last season and Rance says finals are a realistic goal.

“I think everyone plays for finals, so that’s definitely got to be our goal,” Rance told SEN today.

“We need to be up there in the top eight, 6-8. That’s definitely got to be our goal this year.”

Richmond heads into the 2012 season having not made a finals appearance since their 2001 preliminary final loss to the Brisbane Lions and the 22-year-old defender says its time to repay the faith shown by the long-suffering yellow and black army.

“I think it’s time a bit was repaid to the Tigers faithful,” he said.

Rance, who had a career-best season in 2011 as a key defender, said he expects to play a more attacking role this season.

“I think at times all our defenders are going to have the opportunity to head up the ground.

“I think predominantly I’ll be staying sort of more and covering the back space, but if the opportunity does arise I’ll be looking to sneak forward.”
