Rance faces tough AFL test against Patton14 Jun 2012, 2:30 pm

What better way for Richmond's Alex Rance to regain some form than by taking on a debutant teenager in a team ranked 17th on the AFL ladder?
Rance has made a solid start to his fourth season at Tigerland, however the 22-year-old West Australian had a tough day last week as Fremantle's Matthew Pavlich bagged six goals.
On Saturday, Rance is expected to line up on Greater Western Sydney's 19-year-old Victorian recruit Jonathon Patton, who had knee surgery in January.
However, not only is Patton already a man-sized key forward at 197 centimetres and 102 kilograms, he's regarded as a future superstar after being taken at No.1 overall in the 2011 AFL draft.
Rance will be conceding Patton three centimetres and nine kilograms.
"He's a formidable looking lad. You only had to watch him at draft camp," Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said on Thursday.
"You'd never probably seen someone so ready to take the game to the AFL."
Hardwick was asked if Rance would try to intimidate young Patton in the same way Collingwood did with Melbourne's lightly-built debutant No.1 draft pick Jack Watts in 2009.
"'Rancey' will niggle, maybe, but he (Patton) is a player who's certainly looking to make his way in the AFL and we'll treat him accordingly," Hardwick said.
The 11th-placed Tigers (5-6) will be desperate to regain some winning momentum to help them stay in touch with the top eight ahead of next week's bye.
Hardwick says Rance's confidence remains intact.
"Alex didn't play to the level he likes to on a weekly basis," Hardwick said of last week's 12-point loss to the Dockers.
"Pavlich kicked a number of goals over the back where we turned over the ball and Alex got caught out of position.
"He's a confidence player, Alex, and he doesn't lack any of that. He'll get back on the horse this week and I've no doubt he'll have a good game."
The Tigers are expecting Patton to play despite limping off the training track on Wednesday.
"We heard he got a knock on his knee," Hardwick said.
"I saw 'Sheeds' (coach Kevin Sheedy) last night at the Hall of Fame, giving nothing away.
"We think he'll play.
"They've got some formidable targets up there. Jeremy Cameron's playing well."
