Tom Lynch

Well held by Tom Clurey in the first half and was seen more in between the play than during it. Kicked a goal and had a chance at another but the smalls did most of the work once he brought it to ground.

Crying AFL fan’s beautiful message to Tom Lynch after finals bullying

An incredible story of sportsmanship has emerged after the Richmond star Tom Lynch was filmed seemingly consoling a devastated Port fan on Friday night.

Young fan Archer Merritt has revealed to 7NEWS he was actually the one who sought out Lynch after the Tigers won through to the grand final with victory over Port Adelaide.

Merritt told 7NEWS he was shocked at the “bullying” the Richmond key forward was enduring both during and after the match at Adelaide Oval.

After witnessing a Port fan throwing a drink on Lynch during his interview with Channel 7, young Archer knew he had to speak to the star to congratulate him on his finals victory.

“The Port Adelaide supporters were bullying him and making fun of him because he kicked a goal. We felt bad for him and we wanted to congratulate him,” Archer Merritt told 7NEWS.

Archer’s father Jason Merritt explained that he had discussed the treatment with his son, and made it absolutely clear that it wasn’t the right way to go about things when you lose.

“One of the Port supporters had thrown his drink all over Lynch,” Jason told 7NEWS.

“Archer was getting a bit worried. I took him up the back (of the stands) and said to him, ‘That’s not how you lose. That’s poor sportsmanship to carry on like that when your team’s lost’.

“Archie felt bad for that and understood that’s not how you lose a game of football, and that’s not how you treat footballers.

“So he asked if he could get down there and congratulate Tom Lynch on making the grand final.”

The beautiful backstory captured the hearts of footy fans around the country on Saturday evening, with hundreds of people commenting how much they adored both father and son for their strong values.

“Well done, amazing job as a dad!!!! Youre son is an amazing young man. Many supporters of ALL teams could learn from this!” Julianne Higgins wrote on 7AFL Facebook.

“This young man has these values because of his Father. Credit to you both gentleman,” Ben Seinor wrote.

“This young man is an absolute credit to his family and his parents. Wish more parents were like this,” wrote Lissa Richard.

Lovely story.

It appears at least two Port supporters are not C-words.

Also they should find who threw the drink and give them a life ban. That is low AF.

Richmond has a great history of forwards showing great sportsmanship...

I remember seeing Mark Jackson in 1980 reserves team.
He used to get things thrown at him all game so as an act of great sportsmanship he used to politely pick up anything a supporter would throw and politely hand it back to them. :clapping  :rollin

Tom Lynch won't curb his aggression as Harry Taylor waits (Age)

Lynch won't curb his aggression as Taylor waits

The Age

Attacking the football will be Richmond forward Tom Lynch's only objective against Geelong in Saturday's grand final as he attempts to help the Tigers to back-to-back flags in just his second season at the club.

The 27-year-old conceded vision of him putting his knee on St Kilda opponent Dougal Howard's neck in the semi-final, when the Saint was lying on the ground, "wasn't a great look for the game" but he is not about to curb his aggressive approach.

Lynch, subject to fierce public scrutiny in 2020 after the MRO fined him five times for a series of off the ball incidents, has been repeatedly and vigorously defended by his coach Damien Hardwick but he admitted he would rather be seen solely as a player who attacked the ball hard.

"I don't want to be portrayed as that. I didn't actually realise I [put my knee on Howard] on the day. People probably won't believe me but that doesn't really matter, these things happen," Lynch said.

"You are pretty focused on the footy and going hard at the footy so sometimes small things may bob up."

He said he played his best footy when he launched at the football in the air and that would not change despite the commentary targeting his approach.

Lynch said no one goes out of their way to be disliked but often there was little a footballer could do to change opinions so it was important he listened to those who cared about him most.

"It can be false when people love you and they don't know you, or if they hate you and they don't know you, but the main thing is people that know you closest, [that] you care about, what they think and their opinion," Lynch said.

He said although some of the incidents had been overblown in his opinion he had maintained perspective about the criticism given what was happening in the world.

"It's been a challenging year for everyone. Everyone has had their challenges this year in every walk of life," Lynch said.

Lynch expects to play on veteran Geelong defender Harry Taylor having matched up against him in recent battles, with the Tiger kicking five goals on him in last year's preliminary final.

Taylor, 34, said he would relish the chance to play on him again in such a big game.

"I love playing on the best players in the game and he's certainly for me one of the best players and an absolute star of the competition at the moment," Taylor said.

He borrowed baseball terminology to describe Lynch as a "five-tool player", meaning he was elite in more than one area.

"He's just got a physical presence. He's strong, he's athletic," Taylor said.

"He can do everything that you require of a forward ... kicks goals when he needs to, takes a good mark, puts defensive pressure on.

"In baseball, sometimes they talk about hitting with power, hitting to position and they're also great fielders and he sort of reminds me so much of a five-tool, in terms of all the things he brings to their forward line."

The Cats' dual premiership player was key in the 2009 premiership when he played on former Saints star Nick Riewoldt and kept him relatively subdued, taking a vital mark late in the game when the Saints were pressing.

He also took on Hawks forward Jarryd Roughead in the 2008 grand final and played on Collingwood's Travis Cloke in the first half of the 2011 grand final before Tom Lonergan moved on to him.

Lynch, who performed well in last year's finals, said although the Tigers didn't want to overstep the mark on Saturday and give away 50-metre penalties unnecessarily, he expected the battle to be fierce.

"When two sides are going pretty hard at it as they were on the weekend you are going to get a slip up in a tackle every now and then," Lynch said.

Tom Lynch – 4
Had a dirty night up until the last quarter, being well-held by Harry Taylor. Started to find some space after the final break and slotted his sole goal a third of the way through the fourth to take the margin to 15.

Tom Lynch
Had an average first term with no shots on goal and a sliding mark dropped. He took a nice mark to begin the final term, but a shank inside 50 meant the Cats could mop up and avoid an early shot on goal. He did redeem himself with a mark inside the goalsquare to lift the Tigers margin to 15-points midway through the last.

Not a great year from the big man. Accuracy down, less marks. Could have delivered more than he has although it's not from lack of effort.

At times I have thought the media scrutiny has gotten to him.

Hoping for a better year in 2021.

Collingwood today trying to claim they never were after Lynch :lol.

First their footy manager Walsh on MMM said they never were. Then Eddie chipped in and claimed they only phoned Lynch once and left it there.

Yeah right! :rollin

They do realise there’s video footage of one of their officials (can’t remember who) going to his house pretty late in the season and jumping the fence on his way out to try and avoid the media lol

That was Ned Guy.  What Walsh and Eddie meant was we tried to get Lynch interested in coming to us but he kept telling us to FO.
