Dusty Martin charges into Tigers' season opener

AAP
21 March 2019

Boom Richmond recruit Tom Lynch has hogged the headlines but Tigers fans have another reason to be excited about the coming AFL season: just quietly, Dusty is in the best shape of his career.

After taking all before him in 2017, Dustin Martin struggled with a sore knee late last year and recently revealed he also battled anxiety during the Tigers’ premiership campaign that ended in a preliminary final loss.

No one’s suggesting he’s about to win a Brownlow Medal and a Norm Smith Medal in a premiership team as he did two years ago, but the 27-year-old is ready to hit the 2019 season at full pace.

“It’s pretty hard to emulate that 2017 season … I’ve been in footy for a long time and I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like it, to be fair,” coach Damien Hardwick replied when asked if Martin can reach the same heights this season.

“If he gets anywhere near those lofty standards we’ll be very happy.

“But he’s in fantastic nick at the moment, as good a nick as he’s been in and probably even better than that season, so we’re really happy with him.”

Surprising too as Dusty seemed to be on and back to near his best during the JLT. Actually it was similar to the Prelim in some ways. His kicking really was off and he got caught a few times.

Played like a millionairre but was hardly Robinson Crusoe in that regard...his most notable Friday funnily enough but not surprisingy, being Butler.....and he still stepped up in the last when the match needed putting away....

Definitely a below average game for his standards. He was good in patches but not what you expect from a player of his calibre. Dropping marks and missing targets is just not vintage dusty.

Poor game, extremely poor

Final qtr was reasonable but the others, poor

His don’t argues are being heavily argued at the moment
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Looked totally flat and disinterested to me, maybe just had his mind on other things, having said that his game stats would be greatly accepted by the majority of midfielders in the competition.

This bloke is a star and last night frustrated the hell out of me like some other of his games.
Do you ppl think he would get a spray for his defensive efforts? We know that his defensive efforts aren't great but last night just seemed to be one of the worst.

Reminded me a bit of a world class batsman that was out of form last night. Just missing shots he’d normally smack for four, couldn’t work the strike.

But when the chase got a little tight he managed to get some crucial runs to keep us ahead of the run rate.

The footy shows last night spoke about Dusty. They mentioned since Yeo worked out to slap Dusty's arm before trying to tackle him, all of Dusty's opponents are now copying the technique and Dusty's "don't argues" aren't effective anymore. He's getting caught now more often than not.

Too many crap talkers on a Monday night IMO.
I think I saw a couple that oppos couldn't stop. Was caught holding the ball twice on Thursday night.
More often that not SMH!!

I also think I saw a KMAC don't argue and Cotch has 2 or 3 a game also. Seeing as they most likely been taught by DM why weren't they stopped?

I love Monday night reviews!
