Tigers hunt Knights, Chaplin
By Harry Thring
3:13 PM Tue 25 Sep, 2012

RICHMOND is poised to snare two South Australian players in October's free agency period after Adelaide forward Chris Knights quit the Crows on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old left footer, who has played 96 games since he was taken by the Crows with pick No. 56 at the 2004 NAB AFL Draft, will enter the free agency period able to join any club offering him a contract.

Richmond has been strongly linked to Knights and it's believed the left footer is keen to join the Tigers.

He's not the only Adelaide-based player in Richmond's sights though - Port Adelaide defender Troy Chaplin is also reportedly in the mix to land at Punt Rd in 2013.

While Knights is an unrestricted free agent, Chaplin is restricted, which means the Power will have right of reply should he ask to join Richmond.

Knights struggled to break into the Crows' line-up this season, playing only five senior games despite solid form for Woodville/West Torrens in the SANFL.

Crows football manager Phil Harper was full of praise for the forward, despite his decision to quit the club, insisting he would "always be welcome" at West Lakes.

"It has been a difficult year for Chris as he has struggled to get a regular game with our team," Harper said.

"However, his effort to remain positive, upbeat and ready to take his next opportunity has been a credit to his character.

"The club wishes Chris all the best in his future ... he will always be welcome as a past Adelaide Football Club player."

I've moved the latest Chris Knights discussion in the rumour thread to here so it doesn't get lost in amongst the other trade rumour talk.

Dunno if putting Edwards in twice makes it more or less scary.  ;)

Some people will be ratting their own sarcasm by the end of next season. Knights will be an important player to our structure. Having a genuine mid sized forward who can hold their own in the midfield is something we haven't had at Tigerland for years. We've started to add midfielders who can rest forward but players like Nahas and Edwards are too small to work in contested stoppages.

A forward line with fully fit Jack and Vickery will be scary for opposition defenders. Edwards can be very dangerous up forward, King can't be ignored and Nahas can pop up at the bottom of packs. Add Knights as a hit up quick small and we add another dimension to the F50 that we haven't had. I hope we also add Griffiths into the mix as a hit up CHF. Then we would be tough to match up on.

I actually think it will be a good forward line, especially if Vickery can get back to his 2011 form.
