St Kilda selection #76

JAMES STEWART
DOB:
Height: 197cm
Weight: 82kg
Club: Sandringham Dragons / Vic Metro

Will take a project player at 76, but a very decent one in Stewart. Very surprised he hasn't been snapped up earlier in the draft, as he has some exceptional talent.

Kevin Sheehan says: “Tall forward with outstanding agility for his size. Very poised with his disposal by hand or foot and can play at either end of the ground or through the midfield. Has good game sense and natural pace. Is eligible for father/son to Collingwood, where father Craig played. Represented Vic Metro in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships with his best game vs TAS gaining 23 possessions including 15 contested and six marks. Graduate of the AIS-AFL Academy.”

PICK 79 – Geelong: JARROD LIENERT

Height: 191cm, Weight: 80kg, DOB: 5/8/1994

Recruited from: Sturt

Lienert is a third tall defender who has really impressed at U/18’s level in South Australia.

Geelong would get a bit of a bargain here. He can play on most forwards, and offers really good rebounding, but reads the play well and can take a grab. I think the fact he started off as a forward really helped him.

He only played the one game in the National Champs, so he doesn’t have a whole heap of exposed form, but he played pretty well in that one against Northern Territory.

Pick 82. Collingwood. Nick Newman
Born: 15/01/1993
Height: 186cm
Weight: 76kg
From: Mornington
Club: Dandenong Stingrays

Collingwood have spoken to Newman and reckon his got the talent if he works hard enough. A prospect forward who could add a rotation to the midfield. Works hard.

Pick 83. Port Adelaide - Pass.

Port will probably keep a pick up its sleeve for the PSD.

Sorry - work crisis  :banghead

Essendon will probably pass with this pick but just to keep things interesting -

93. Essendon - Tyler Blake (184cm defender - North Ballarat)

I'm not sure how many people had Blake on their radars coming into the season, but it was his form for Vic Country which turned me into a fan for what its worth. Typically small defenders aren't all that highly sought after come draft day, but I really like Blake and wouldn't hesitate if he were available with a late round pick. He is a nice size for a small defender, perfectly capable of playing on many types of forwards. He is also really composed with ball in hand.

Swans are all done.  The reach with picks 96 and 104 is too far - there's nothing worthwhile left in the well.
