Lions national talent manager Rob Kerr on Trade Radio:

"Justin [Leppitsch] sees some value in Luke coming to Brisbane, one factor being added depth.

We've told Luke, we think there's a spot there for you. We're not entirely sure how this period will go."

Luke McGuane's bid to get to the Lions as a free agent is dependant on a number of factors, including the aforementioned negotiations as well as the future of star veteran Simon Black, who is weighing up a decision whether to continue for another year.

Player manager Tim Hazell tells Gillette Trade Radio a deal to send Tigers big man Luke McGuane to the Brisbane Lions is "pretty close".

McGuane is an unrestricted free agent, so the Lions won't need to trade with Richmond. It's just a matter of club and player agreeing on contract terms.

Richmond defender Luke McGuane may have to wait until the trade period ends before moving to the Brisbane Lions as a delisted free agent, rather than signing with the club by the end of the initial free-agency period on Friday. While McGuane quit the Tigers two weeks ago saying he would like to play for the Lions, he did not have an offer from the club and Brisbane is unsure how many spots it will have available on its list until it works through a number of trades.

The club has five youngsters looking for new homes - Billy Longer, Jared Polec, Elliot Yeo, Patrick Karnezis and Sam Docherty - but is hopeful it can convince Longer to stay and is looking to trade in players as well as draft picks, meaning McGuane might have to wait.

The free agency period finishes on Friday, but clubs will have further opportunities to sign players as delisted free agents. If not signed this week, McGuane could ultimately delist himself from Richmond.

He hasn't been a defender in ages! And for good reason too!

The Lions will not nominate Luke McGuane as a free agent by Friday's deadline, meaning Richmond will not be compensated for the loss of the 26-year-old.

The Tigers had hoped that losing McGuane and Matt White (to Port Adelaide) would slightly increase their net compensation, but the Lions will instead wait and secure McGuane as a delisted free agent.

Why can't we just offer him a 12 month minimum wage contract?
Yeah we're already going to vote for him mate, you don't need to keep selling it.....

Why stuff him around?
If we don't want him, we should let him go.
It's that simple Spud

what do brisbane gain by not signing him now, or what do they lose by signing him now?

Plus he's quit the club means he doesn't want to be there

Cannot see how it is in RFC interest to keep a 100+ game 8-year veteran on the list that has stated that he wants out on the playing group.

I agree that holding out for a compensation pick is a well considered strategic move by he club, however there is no currency and sometimes the best interest is served by amputation ... Cut and move on asap for both parties sake as there is less infection.

Yep, all the media stories are saying he has quit the club to likely go to Brisbane

Also, Luke himself has said he was twice offered a new contract and had knocked them back to try FA, so to me at least that's a pretty reasonable sign that he wants to move on

so he isn't delisted free agent because he quit.
