AFL trades: Richmond not prepared to offer Ben Lennon up for trade with Carlton for Chris YarranJon Ralph
Herald Sun
Richmond says it has not offered up second-year forward Ben Lennon as part of its impending Chris Yarran deal and expects to re-sign him soon.
Lennon was dropped by Richmond for the elimination final with reports linking him to Carlton as a swap for talented but erratic defender Yarran.
If he was to depart it would continue this year’s trend of players wanting out of their clubs just two seasons into their initial contract.
But while his management is pursuing a better deal from the Tigers, they believe he will soon sign a new deal to stay.
The No.12 pick from the 2013 national draft played eight highly encouraging games this year after easing into his first year at Richmond.
It is understood the Tigers are closing in on his signature despite demands for a bigger contract for the 20-year-old.
A club spokesman said Lennon was a required player at Richmond who had a long-term future at the club.
“We expect to finalise the contract sooner rather than later,’’ he said.
Yarran posted a message on Instagram confirming his departure, a day after new coach Brendon Bolton said he would not plead with him to stay.
“With Chris he’s a contracted player and an A-Grade player when he is up and about. But if he doesn’t want to play we will have a discussion about what the return is.
“I think I’m in the wrong area if I am trying to convince people to stay.”
The Tigers only want to hand Carlton their second-round pick for Yarran, with the Blues likely to ask for more.
Richmond is also considering its options with Harley Bennell, but is yet to get in front of him to discuss whether he can turn around a chequered career.
