Can confirm the Melbourne City Council have confirmed their contribution.

Plan still is for works to begin after season 2007 - with the old social club the first bit to go

Great news. Any time frame of when it'll be completed by WP?

I've heard 2008 - they want it to be finished for the our centenary year of joining the VFL.

But as with most building projects we'll wait and see...  :thumbsup

Think you'll find the designs they put up before will be the way they go

Bye Bye Punt road - Well the way I have known it my whole life.
Should be a big day - hopefully the tigers can get up and hopefully the new one will have an outside area.

From the Tiger bulletin

Farewell the Social Club

This Saturday (September 1) is your chance to farewell one of Tigerland’s icons – the Social Club at Punt Road . . .

The Richmond Social Club will be pulled down at the end of the year as part of the redevelopment of Punt Road Oval, so Saturday’s final home-and-away round match against St Kilda, across the road at the MCG, provides the opportunity to soak up all the atmosphere for the last time.

There will be a range of pre-game and post-game activities centered around the Social Club, with a barbecue, music, the giant Tiger Slide and face painting for the kids, plus a massive RFC merchandise end-of-season sale.

Given the expected interest among members of the Yellow and Black faith to attend this final Social Club function, patrons are advised that the venue will have an increased capacity for the day.

The pre-game activities will kick off at 11.30am on Saturday and then re-commence immediately after the match finishes at the MCG.

 :'( :cheers :'( :cheers :gotigers

Lots of good memories there over the years but the ground needs the redevelopment.

Does anyone know if the oval itself will be made larger/longer?

Gary March also said today that the demolition of the old Social Club will start in January. The development is with architects as we speak and will hopefully (with Goverment approval) be larger than first planned.

Funds for Punt Rd Oval
19 October 2007   Herald Sun
Daryl Timms

THE Federal Government will contribute $2 million to the redevelopment of Richmond's Punt Rd Oval.

An announcement will be made today by the Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator George Brandis.

Despite being home to Richmond for more than 120 years, Punt Rd Oval has fallen away into a venue with limited community benefit, according to Brandis.

"The Richmond Football Club's proposal will see the Oval become a centre for community life for the club's members, supporters and residents of the inner region of Melbourne," Senator Brandis said yesterday.

With a membership of about 30,000, Brandis said more than 35,000 local residents used Punt Rd Oval each year.

The Government funding will help the Tigers upgrade facilities for use by local community groups and residents and create community participation and involvement to complement the club.

Brandis said facilities planned for Punt Rd Oval included an indoor sports centre to house community sports, community swimming change rooms and new football change rooms.

"The new venue will also provide a new home for the Tigers in the Community Foundation Program which focuses on leadership, education and training, anti-obesity and healthy lifestyle programs," Brandis said.

The Australian Government will provide the funding in 2007-08.

Brandis said the Government's contribution was subject to the AFL, the Victorian Government and Richmond meeting their respective commitments to the project.

"The Australian Government will also consider the provision of a further contribution of up to $5 million towards the establishment of the proposed Indigenous Sports Institute, subject to the proposal being developed further in coming months," Brandis said.

This year the Australian Government will provide more than $350 million in funding for sport, an increase of more than 300 per cent since 1996.

Brilliant idea.

No shortage of funding for an Indigenous Development Centre.
