Trade period verdict: How did your club fare?

Nathan Schmook
afl.com.au
19 October 2017

RICHMOND

In: Picks 20, 25, 53

Out: Picks 15, 52, 2018 third-round pick

Win: An improved hand at the draft for the premiers

Lose: Not much

2017 draft picks: 17, 20, 25, 53, 55, 74, 92, 110

What couldn't they get done? Keeping Anthony Miles was the club's preference after he explored opportunities. The Tigers didn't actively search for any other deals.

Nathan Schmook's verdict:
The premiers were committed to taking a strong hand to the draft while positioning themselves strategically to cover a bid for father-son prospect Patrick Naish. On that score they have delivered, making sure they can use at least two picks in the top 25, keeping another to use on Naish if required. Ruled themselves out of the race for Schache early, which may have been a missed opportunity.

Rating:
7/10

Anyone else disappointing we didn't end up with Schache?

Nah.

No one was really interested in him. Has to be a reason, not sure what it is......

Surely he's going to be one of the top picks? He's a beauty.

The only problem I have is that we are pretty much backing in the talls we have to step up. Nankervis needs help and it ain't coming from Hampson, nor soldo anytime soon. So that leaves us with Griffiths

Expert recruiter and list guru GARY BUCKENARA rates your club’s trade period.

RICHMOND

IN: Pick 20, pick 25, pick 53

OUT: Pick 15, pick 52, 2018 third-round pick

DRAFT PICKS: 17, 20, 25, 53, 55, 74, 92

GARY BUCKENARA SAYS: Not big players this year after securing Dion Prestia, Josh Caddy and Toby Nankervis last year but the Tigers have improved their draft position so that gets them a tick from me. No doubt pick Nos. 20 and 25 will be critical in securing father-son prospect Patrick Naish, who will more-than-likely attract a bid from a rival club in the first-round of November’s national draft. I was surprised Richmond didn’t pursue Josh Schache because another tall is a list need but bearing in mind the draft points equation for Naish, it makes sense. Schache would have cost them a pick or a couple of picks (or even a good player), which could have affected their ability to draft Naish.

From Barrett's 'sliding doors' column:

RICHMOND

IF ......... you win a flag with a heap of more-than-handy fringe players who either didn't want to leave or have stayed on the list after failing to get adequate outside offers ...

THEN .... there's nothing wrong with not landing a big fish.

-----------------------

ps. Barrett reckons Geelong only got pick 19 for Motlop because the AFL knew it would then get the Ablett trade done and they wanted to give their struggling expansion club Gold Coast another first round pick.

Richmond lands three picks inside 25 after swap of picks to help secure father-son Patrick Naish

MICHAEL WARNER,
Herald Sun
October 20, 2017 9:00am

A SAVVY swap of picks has handed Richmond three draft selections inside 25 and extra points to land father-son prospect Patrick Naish.

The Tigers traded picks 15 and 52 for Brisbane’s 20 and 25 and sent next year’s third-round pick to Geelong in return for the Cats’ third-round selection this year (53).

“To have three picks inside the first 25 is a strong position and we feel a better outcome,” Richmond football talent manager Dan Richardson said.

“After the first 15 or so picks we think it’s a relatively even group of players up until about pick 30.”

Depending on interest from rival clubs, the Tigers could secure Naish as well as three draftees with picks 17, 20 and 25.

The Western Bulldogs loom as Richmond’s biggest concern in the race for Naish, a skilled outside midfielder from the Northern Knights.

Richardson said the Tigers did not seriously entertain trading for established players this year.

Midfielder Anthony Miles and mid-forward Sam Lloyd attracted some interest but are staying at Punt Rd.

Richmond’s hand at next month’s draft in Sydney is 17, 20, 25, 53, 55 and 74.

Think it's a pretty safe/obvious bet isn't it? Plus hasn't been out in the open there was a one year offer and Miles was happy to take it but wanted to look around first? Think his manager said as such

Not necessarily

Doesn't have to sign anything and can still leave

A club could have said to his manager we want him at our club but don't want to give up anything (eg draft picks)

Get him through to the preseason draft and we will take him and it wont cost us anything

Until pen is put to paper he is still a chance to leave

Not just that actually, By the AFL getting Gaz to the Cats they can now set up Lynch as an AFL ambassador and pay him a nice sum to keep him there.

Very unlikely - These days the player and manager  want a fair outcome for the club they are leaving and hence insist on a trade.  Miles just wasn't high enough priority for another club to offer what we considered fair value.
