'He fulfils a role': Dimma defends Lynch's output

Tom Lynch could be more dynamic at another club but is happy to play his role at Richmond, Damien Hardwick says

By AAP

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has launched a passionate defence of Tom Lynch in the face of mounting criticism of the highly-paid key forward.

Lynch has managed 10.9 from an average of 10 disposals this season in the Tigers' disappointing 3-3 start to their latest premiership defence.

Last week against Melbourne, Lynch was held scoreless for the first time since his high-profile move to Richmond as a restricted free agent at the end of 2018.

His seven-year deal is reportedly worth more than $6 million and Hardwick said the Tigers are getting value for money, declaring the 28-year-old spearhead is filling the role required by his team.

"Tom could go to another club and be more dynamic as a player, there's no doubt," Hardwick said.

"He comes to our club, he fulfils a role. What we determine that role is, allows us to win games of footy.

"There's no doubt he could play in a different format, a different system, and get All-Australian honours.

"But the reality is he comes in and he's happy to fulfil this role and he gets two premiership medals as a result of that."

Lynch kicked 63.31 from 25 games in his first season at Richmond and 32.27 in 19 games - with reduced quarter lengths - last year.

Former Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd has led the chorus of prominent media commentators questioning Lynch's output in 2021.

"People can judge him for what it is but we know what we value as a (club) and Jack Riewoldt is the same," Hardwick said.

"We're a system-based side and he plays according to our system.

"If people want him to kick 60-80 goals, that's not going to happen.

"We've been down that road as a Richmond footy club and we finished ninth.

"But the fact of the matter is that Tom and Jack play very specific roles within our system that allow us to win a lot of games of footy."

“Now, can they play better at various stages – yep, like every other player in the league.

But the fact of the matter is Tom is a very valued player in our system and what we choose to pay that player is what we think he's worth - end of story," Hardwick said.

Is his role to drop marks and run slowly?

It’ll help if he lead and got front position.

Yes and apparently it currently also involves missing easy shots, trailing his opponent, having tackles broken by blokes half his size and giving away dumb free kicks. :shh

Discussing the Tom Lynch situation on SEN Breakfast, Sam Edmund and David King had slightly differing opinions on the form of Lynch and what makes him valuable to the Tigers.

Edmund pies the question: “Let’s boil it down, here’s there to kick goals and take marks, isn’t he?

“Let’s strip it back. They talk about bringing the ball to ground, creating a contest, pressure. But you’re paying him nearly a million dollars a season.”

King was more forgiving of the 28-year-old, highlighting the fact that Richmond never sacrificed draft selections to get him and simply offered him the money they believed he was worth when he crossed from the Gold Coast Suns at the end of 2018.

He fully backed Hardwick’s stance on and defence of Lynch.

“If you haven’t got him, the hole in your team if he’s not there overrides the financial discussion, I think,” the former North Melbourne champ said.

“You don’t know the impact they (key forwards) have until you haven’t got one. For what he’s been able to do for Jack Riewoldt, he’s freed up Jack, hasn’t he?

“He (Hardwick) is trying to educate us really. You don’t have to believe it if you don’t want. I think when a coach talks like this you’ve got to sit back sometimes and say, ‘What am I missing here?’

“I think that was a really healthy discussion for all of us.”

Lloyd critical of Richmond forward who is “not going that well”

King further pinpointed the impact Lynch has on the side, particularly Richmond’s small forwards, even if he isn’t charging around clunking marks and banging home goals.

“You’ve got to look at the overall picture,” he added.

“(Jason) Castagna has kicked nine goals, (Jake) Aarts has kicked seven, (Daniel) Rioli has kicked six, Shai Bolton four goals. So do those goals come about if Lynch is not bringing the ball to ground?

“That’s their game, isn’t it? That’s Richmond’s game. The chaotic game at ground level. If he marks it, great. If he has a six-goal game, great.

“Without him in 2019, in Jack’s absence, he was fantastic. You’re not winning that flag, you’re not in the same position you are as a football club without him.

“We get too consumed, and certainly the fans do, with what you’re paying these guys. He really cost them nothing in a draft, he hasn’t cost them any picks because he was a free agent, so it’s finance only.

“I don’t understand the conversation. I think the way Damien answered that question was brilliant.”

Lynch has set the benchmark now for how he has to play. That was a dominant performance in spite of the missed shots.

Turned the game and Bolton finished them off (gee we gotta sign him).

Wish he'd kicked that Aarts one himself and gotten on a roll earlier. Should take confidence from tonight. He was awesome. Keath is crapola.

Thought he was more on his bike he took marks because he was on the move and it stopped two or three hanging off him.
Did he play more the JR role and Jr who i thought very good despite the low stats played more Toms role.

This week tom was in the best 5. Could have kicked in reality 5 or 6 kicking goals and taking marks despite what Hardwick said is what we got him for.

Did anyone see Dimma’s presser, despite the usual ‘it’s not about goals’ he nearly said he is there to kick goals but caught himself and reiterated the team first mantra.

That’s a great assessment. The conspiracy theory side of me thinks maybe the rounds leading into this was the “plan b” I.e how well lynch can play the decoy, forward Ruck drag opponents away from Jack and since we really needed the 4 points the coaches went screw it back to plan a, Tom, do that thing you did at Adelaide oval

Criticism sparks Tiger into action

Damien Hardwick was forced to launch a passionate defence of Tom Lynch this week, with the dual premiership forward producing an impressive – if inaccurate – response. Lynch claimed seven marks, had five score involvements and put Richmond's first goal on a plate for Jake Aarts in the first quarter alone. However, when the moments for Lynch himself to be the hero came, he struggled. Lynch kicked behinds from his first five shots on goal, eventually hitting the target with his sixth effort in the third quarter. That sparked Richmond's comeback, with Lynch finishing with three majors, 14 disposals, 12 marks and 11 score involvements in a near best-on-ground display.
