One thing noticeable is 5 of Carlton's goals so far tonight have come from forward stoppages. We know Dimma hates us giving up even one goal in a game from a defensive stoppage so we should be watching out for it.

Zac Williams will be looked at for that bump where he leaped off the ground.

Weitering clutching his knee according to SEN. Ran off but went straight down into the rooms. [Ed. It's not a knee but a cork to the hip].

Carlton will be nervous about key forward Harry McKay's ankle injury. After tweaking it last week, McKay lasted just a quarter before again landing awkwardly and being withdrawn from the match at the first change. He adds to a growing list of attacking injuries at Ikon Park, with Mitch McGovern (hamstring), Levi Casboult (knee) and Eddie Betts (calf) all having to prove their fitness ahead of round one without a practice match under their belts. Key defender Jacob Weitering (hip) watched the final quarter-and-a-half from the bench, while Jack Newnes (ankle) is another concerning blow.

Those injuries were compounded by Williams' late bump on St Kilda youngster Hunter Clark in the game's opening seconds, with the club's star free agent signing leaving his feet and collecting his opponent late and to the head in an incident that left him dazed behind play.

DION PRESTIA CONFIRMS GOOD NEWS ON HAMSTRING STRAIN, PROVIDES UPDATE ON TOM LYNCH INJURY

By Laurence Rosen
SEN
6 March 2021

Richmond midfielder Dion Prestia has confirmed he’s all but certain to play in Round 1 as he continues to work his way back from a hamstring injury.

The triple premiership player said he was backing his ability to play in the season-opener against Carlton on the back of no practice matches in the lead up.

“I tweaked my hamstring probably two weeks ago in a main training session,” he said on Sportsday.

“I will train on Sunday just to tick off some footy and speed and then I’ll be back in with the main group.

“We contemplated playing tonight, but we just thought it gives me another two weeks to really get it right and back my ability to play without any pre-season games.

“All being well over the next two weeks, I’ll be good to go for Round 1.”

Star forward Tom Lynch also didn’t play against the Pies in the club’s final match before the start of the season due to a toe injury.

Prestia explained the circumstances behind the unusual injury, with Lynch also expected to be fully fit for Round 1.

“I think (Tom Lynch) kicked the ground and stubbed his toe (at training),” he said.

“We say Tom Lynch play with no pre-season (games last season) and have a pretty good year.

“There was no point risking a player like him (tonight).”

Completely forgot about that  :doh.

So Aarts will play round 1 I'm guessing.

Zac Williams has copped a week from the MRO. So unless he appeals he won't be playing against us.

Richmond are expected to be without All-Australian defender Bachar Houli for the season-opener.

But prized key forward Tom Lynch is expected to be available for the season’s first game on Thursday next week, having made strong progress in his recovery from a sore toe.

Houli has been recovering from a calf injury and it appears unlikely that the Tigers will risk him, given his age and limited preparation. He “popped” his calf early in the 2020 grand final, but managed to stay on the field and play the game out – a critical effort in view of the loss of Nick Vlastuin to concussion.

Star midfielder Dion Prestia (hamstring) is also a reasonable chance to return for the blockbuster against the Blues, who will have most of their best 22 available, barring some longer-term absentees.

BLUES AND TIGERS TO BE BOOSTED BY INJURY RETURNS FOR ROUND 1

Sam Edmund
SEN
11 March 2021

Richmond will welcome Tom Lynch (toe) back and are optimistic Dion Prestia (hamstring) can get to the start line to face the Blues.

Important defender Bachar Houli will miss with miss with a calf injury, while Ivan Soldo (knee) is out long-term.

Carlton is set to be boosted by the availability of a host of key players for its season-opening assignment against Richmond.

Levi Casboult (knee) is expected to prove his fitness in the coming days, while his key forward counterpart Harry McKay is considered almost certain to shake off another ankle tweak.

Veteran goalsneak Eddie Betts (calf), who kicked two goals in a VFL practice match against St Kilda last weekend, is also eligible for selection for Thursday night’s blockbuster at the MCG.

But fellow attacker Mitch McGovern, while yet to be ruled out, is unlikely to feature as he struggles to shake a hamstring problem.

At the other end of the ground, Jacob Weitering failed to finish the AAMI Community Series game against St Kilda with a corked hip, but the Blues are confident he will recover for Richmond.

Promising ruckman Tom De Koning has been making better-than-expected progress on a low level stress reaction in his back, but is still set to miss the opening couple of rounds.
