Key player every AFL club must re-sign as 2024 contract priorities revealed

Samson Ryan

Yes, the likes of Toby Nankervis, Jack Grimes, Dustin Martin and Dion Prestia are also out of contract, but it’s a case of either they’ll re-sign or wouldn’t be a disaster if they left (outside of perhaps Nankervis) given their age as the club moves into a new phase. Yes, the three flags in four years was an almighty effort, but it’s now time to regenerate, making Samson Ryan an important piece moving forward given the club’s relatively lean key position/tall stocks. Despite only being 15 games into his career, the 22-year old has shown flashes both in the ruck and up forward. And with Ivan Soldo’s departure and Jack Riewoldt’s retirement, Ryan becomes all the more important, he just needs the time to settle.

Has he gained strength though. Has he found some intensity as well.

Still a kid in ruck terms, rucks peake at 25 mate have a look around the league kid's tracking well.
just stating what are quite clearly his deficiencies to date.
Size  and subsequent strength are things that can be worked on but mongrel and intensity cannot be taught you either have it or you don't.
All these things are  things that have to improve. for a 206cm ruckman he is pushed around far too easily and won't make it if he cannot be better in these things. He is what 23 in december and while still young is hardly a kid anymore.

Which of today’s ruckmen have mongrel?
Max Gawn?
Tim English?
Todd Goldstein?
Oscar Mcinerney?
Grundy?
Jackson from freo ? Maybe
Reily O’Brien?
Mark Blicavs?
That’s all I can think of at the moment
I think our boy Nank tops the current list in the AFL for mongrel

THE PLAYER FROM YOUR AFL CLUB WHO IS SET TO EXPLODE IN 2024

Andrew Slevison
SEN
24 November 2023

Samson Ryan

The Tigers don’t have an obvious standout in this category.

Emerging ruck/forward Ryan is now entering his fourth season in the system and after a promising 2023, could break through next year.

Ryan kicked 12 goals from 14 games and averaged 12 hit-outs and seven disposals last year. While he may not pick up huge numbers, he could improve that to somewhere around 20 goals now that Jack Riewoldt has retired, as well as improving to 10-12 disposals and 15 hit-outs as Toby Nankervis’ ruck support.

He has only played 15 AFL games but certainly has the scope to step up a level in 2024. While he may not quite explode, we’re backing Ryan to somewhat break out next year.

I'm not convinced that this guy has any real talent and has as about as much coordination as a baby giraffe.  :rollin

I did like that one kick out to the player on the wing.   :thumbsup

Needs to be able to take a mark it’s as simple as that. He can be the best tap ruckman our clubs ever seen, but if he can’t contribute outside of those few seconds where there is a stoppage then he won’t make it.

In saying that, just keep getting games into him until the end of the season. If there’s no improvement shown by then, then he’d be lucky to still be on our list although I’d expect him to get another year just on sheer positional need.

I know they say big blokes take longer to develop, but he’ll be 24 by the end of the year. Surely it’s now or never.

Not a forward and plays better when he's the #1 ruck...already proved that a year ago.... :shh

True but last night he was even poor in the ruck

You’ve still gotta be able to mark the footy as a ruckman. Bail out kick down the line, dropping back in defence and stints up forward.

Ryan’s struggling to take uncontested marks let alone contested marks. Then again not like nank was any better in that regard last night.

nank was a disgrace tonight. How he is he captain is mind boggling to me

Ryan was poor. He has to show the can take grabs or he is finished. Play him in the ruck FFS.

I think its his worse game since his first game. In fact its one of the worse games ive seen anyone play by anyone.

Thought it was one of Nank's better games actually and I'm one of his biggest critics since he's been captain...but odds on he'll be crap again next week and the next good one won't for another 6 rounds....need to move on from him and just let Samson sink or swim for the rest of the year then reassess at season's end....unless we find someone better on Wednesday.... :shh
