PAUL AMY'S VFL STABS
Inside Football

THE Coburg Tigers are in talks with Moreland Council about finally having their grandstand rebuilt, more than six years after it was extensively damaged by a fire at the City Oval.

Tigers GM Lee Fraser said he was hopeful there would be developments in the next few weeks.

Coburg’s push to have the grandstand reinstated comes amid continuing speculation about the future of the City Oval.

The prospect of it making way for a town park and apartments has been raised in the $1 billion Coburg Initiative (local resident Peter Robertson has set up a “Save Coburg City Oval” group on Facebook).

Fraser said the council’s willingness to work through the grandstand issue showed it was committed to keeping the ground.

Travis Ronaldson back at Coburg (Age)
« Reply #362 on: June 26, 2010, 02:12:40 AM »
COBURG TIGERS: Ronaldson back

Former captain Travis Ronaldson has returned to the club after a short stint at SANFL club West Adelaide. The 26-year-old returned to Coburg mid-season because of his university studies in Melbourne but has signed until the end of next season.

Tigers coach David Newett said he was delighted to see the return of the talented ruckman as he pushes for selection in the next fortnight.

The season is on the line for both Coburg and Werribee today at Chirnside Park.

''We're certainly fortunate to have guys like Dean Polo and Mitch Morton and Graham Polak, who's been fantastic … if we can get a win that'd be great,'' Newett said.

Coburg Football Club is pleased to announce the signing of former Captain Travis Ronaldson for the remainder of the 2010 and also the 2011 season.

Ronaldson captained the club in 2006 and 2007 and since then has been playing local football and at the start of this season signed up with West Adelaide in the SANFL ,but had to return to Melbourne to continue his university studies.  Travis is expected to start playing senior football in the coming weeks once he has regained full fitness.”

Coburg midterm report (VFL Record)
« Reply #363 on: July 03, 2010, 01:57:38 PM »
COBURG TIGERS - Midterm report
VFL Record

Position: Eleventh

Win/Loss: 3-7
Percentage: 89

Goal kickers: Roberts (11), Morton (10)

Season so far:
Two narrow losses to North Ballarat and Frankston set the scene for what has been a frustrating and largely disappointing season. Coburg Tigers have managed just three wins – and only its 15-point triumph against Bendigo Bombers – was against a club in the eight. Coburg Tigers boast the worst record of any club in close matches – they’re 2-5 in matches decided by 15-points or less.

Swing the ledger the other way or even with a slight win advantage and Coburg Tigers would find themselves inside the eight instead of staring at it forlornly from a long way away. It’s hard to gain a grip on why Coburg Tigers haven’t been able to convert more of those close games or in fact why they’ve found themselves in such a position given the steady stream of experienced Richmond players who have found themselves at the VFL level. Certainly, Coburg Tigers inability to kick consistently big scores is illustrated by the fact that Richmond’s Relton Roberts is Coburg’s leading goal kicker with just 11 goals. It ties Coburg Tigers with a league-worse with Gold Coast who’ve also found goals at a premium.

Prospects:
Certainly, the addition of former captain and ruckman Travis Ronaldson will be welcomed, but Coburg Tigers poor start has left it with a herculean task to climb into the eight. Coburg Tigers would need to win a minimum of six of its remaining eight games and hope that most of those wins were by a considerable margin to boost its meagre percentage. The good news is that the VFL Tigers still have five more home matches and two of those are at Craigieburn where they’re undefeated in two matches. What is not so appealing is that Coburg Tigers must play Williamstown, North Ballarat, Collingwood and Port Melbourne in the run home.

QUARTER BY QUARTER - COBURG TIGERS

WHILE it has won only one quarter – the second, Coburg Tigers have just about broken even overall.

Coburg Tigers is 29-31, a reasonable performance given its lowly ladder standing.

The VFL Tigers have started slowly, winning just six of its 15 opening quarter and that’s despite averaging more than three goals a quarter.

The problem has been that Coburg Tigers have been outscored in every quarter except the second, where they boast 9-6 record.

Five times Coburg Tigers have been held goal less and its season high goal splurge is eight during the third quarter against Gold Coast.

Significantly, Coburg Tigers have been kept to two goals or less 24 times.

Defensively, the club has been okay. Three times they’ve held rivals goal less and restricted them to two goals or less a further 16 times.

One of Coburg Tigers problems has been stopping clubs gaining a run on. Williamstown demolished them with a competition high 11 goals during the third quarter of its Round 6 match.

But, they’ve also surrendered five goals or more a further 15 times.

PAUL AMY'S VFL STABS
Inside Football

THE Coburg Tigers have signed a seven-year lease to stay at the City Oval. The future of the ground appeared under threat after the release of the Coburg Initiative development last year. It raised the prospect of the City Oval making way for apartments. But Moreland Council has now declared it will stay a sporting precinct and the home of the Coburg football and cricket clubs and the TAC Cup’s Calder Cannons. It has also committed money to refurbishing the offices damaged in the fire that swept through the historic grandstand in 2004. Since the fire the Tigers and the Cannons have worked out of the council offices. Coburg Tigers general manager Lee Fraser said it was a relief to sign the lease and gain some security at the City Oval. He said the club had always been committed to staying at its traditional home. “But there’s been a big cloud hanging over us for a number of years,” he said. “We’ve lobbied hard to get things done but in the end I think the Moreland community realised what a great asset they had and they didn’t want it to go. The council has been fantastic in the past six months.” Moreland Council had set aside $135,000 from its 2010/11 capital works budget towards reinstating the offices. AFL Victoria and the State Government will also contribute. There are also moves afoot to gain funding for a masterplan which would include replacing seating in the grandstand, a scoreboard, coaches boxes and improvements to the function room. “We’d love to see the City Oval returned to its former glory,” Fraser said. He confirmed the club had also approached the Victorian Women’s Football League about relocating to Coburg.

THE Tigers have re-signed most of their senior brigade for next year, inking deals with captain Nick Carnell, former skipper Travis Ronaldson, Justin Kalhefeldt, Damian Rayson and Ben Clifton, as well as emerging pair Andy Duhau and James Lawton. Lawton has received a late invitation to the state screenings.

From Paul Amy's column in this week's Inside Football....

A FILIP for the Coburg Tigers, with Sam Power signing on for a second year as assistant and midfield coach.

The classy former Bulldog and Kangaroo agreed to terms with the club last Tuesday. His position will also embrace a liaison role between Coburg and its TAC Cup partner Calder.

“It will mainly be about working with the top-age boys and helping them make that transition from Under 18s to first-year Coburg Tigers players,” Coburg GM Lee Fraser said. He said Power, named on a wing in the VFL team of the year, had been a fine role model.

“He’s an elite endurance runner and his work rate is first-class and he leads by example. The younger guys can see what it takes to reach the highest level.”

Power is combining football with the final year of his law studies.

Skipper Nick Carnell, former captain Travis Ronaldson, Ben Clifton, Justin Kahlefeldt, Damien Rayson, Matt Smith, Jake Collins, Jye Warren, Luke Geister, James Lawton, Andrew Duhau, Brendan Fewster, David Fahey and Tom Lucin have all re-signed.

--------------------------------------------------

THE Coburg Tigers are conducting a “rookie” screening day on Wednesday, October 27 at Highgate Recreation Reserve in Craigieburn.

The idea is to identify potential players before pre-season training.

It may sound harsh but I hope no one from Coburg IMO. I just don't see anyone there as potentially AFL standard. Having said that Lawton could attract interest as a rookie as a young tall forward.
