In the forward line?

Is so griffiths & vickery could be hard to
match up on. Both ruckman size with the #1 defender going to riewoldt.

I would assume Graham & derickx willplay r1 to try and contain hampson and warnock

Coburg Tigers List Update

The list is really starting to take Shape down at Coburg. Football Manager Craig Byron has signed several listed players from 2010 for the upcoming 2011 season. 22 players in all have re committed to the club for 2011 including Captain Nick Carnell, best and fairest winner Sam Power, Justin Kahlefedlt, Ben Clifton, Damien Rayson, Jon Morris, Murphy Ambrose, Rhett Jordan, Christian Mcerlain, Hamish Dahl, Travis Ronaldson, Jake Collins, Luke Geister, Tom Groves, Jye Warren and Matt Smith.

The following players who were also recruited to the club out of the TAC Cup move into their second year with the club and will benefit from the development they had in 2010 and we will hopefully see some of the following players playing regular senior footy in 2010. James Lawton has re committed to the club after just missing out on a Rookie selection in 2010, we are looking for him to add to the 12 senior games he played in 2011. Tom Lucin, Brendan Fewster and Andy Duhau have benefited from a pre season opportunity with Richmond and will all be looking to add to their senior games tally in 2011. David Fahey and Daniel Bisetto are two developing tall’s who are also moving into their second year with the club.

Coburg has been very busy in the off season recruiting some very talented Players out of the TAC cup competition. New coach Adam Potter highlighted the need to recruit young players out of this competition who we think can follow in the footsteps of young Ben Jakobi who was recently picked up by Richmond with their first rookie selection.

In all we have signed 9 players out of the TAC Cup for 2011 and we have another 2 or 3 players still currently training for an opportunity to join the list in 2011.

The following players have joined the club for the 2011 season:

Willie Wheeler – Murray Bushrangers (22 Tac Cup games)

Glenn Grgic – Northern Knights (37 Tac Cup games 1 VFL Game)

Jayke Barrack – Bendigo Pioneers (14 Tac Cup games)

Leigh Masters – Bendigo Pioneers (16 Tac Cup games)

Luke Madden – Calder Cannons (30 Tac Cup games)

Alex McLeod – Calder Cannons (29 Tac Cup games)

Dylan Murphy – Calder Cannons (18 Tac Cup games 2 VFL Games)

Kane Murphy – Calder Cannons

Tom Sullivan – Calder Cannons (11 Tac Cup games)

New Coach Adam Potter is excited about our new batch of young players out of this competition.

“ I think the initiative to allow players out of the TAC cup completion to play as the 23rd player gives these young players some excellent opportunities. I am very excited about our new batch of young players and expect some of them to step straight in and play under this rule and hopefully also earn opportunities in their own right. Our players out of the TAC cup this year combined for over 20 games and looking at the way this new group are going about the pre season I think this statistic will continue in 2011.”

Willie Wheeler is a highly skilled player who has a fantastic work rate, Glenn Grgic is very quick with a high level of endurance and also uses the ball extremely well. Jayke Barrack has been training at a high intensity and also thrived on the opportunity he had to train at Richmond. He will be joined by former team mate Leigh Masters who is re locating to Melbourne to play with Coburg. Our Cannons contingent includes 4 premiership players and Kane Murphy who is coming back strongly from a broken leg in 2010. Alex McLeod is recovering from an ankle injury and should be back training in January. Luke Madden and the Murphy boys have been training very well.

The club is also pleased to announce the following players have committed to the club for the 2011 season:

Jamason Daniels
Jameson joins Coburg after two seasons on the Western Bulldogs rookie list. Jameson played 9 senior games for Williamstown this year and at the age of 20 will continue to develop his game at Coburg in 2011. He is a powerful midfield type who uses the ball well, he has a high level of endurance and tested very well in our 20m sprint test.

Luke Cartelli
Luke joins us after spending 3 years on the Williamstown list. Luke won the reserve B & F in 2008 and was runner up in 2010. He played around 10 senior games during his time at Williamstown but found with the likes of Johnson, Jolley and Davies his senior opportunities were limited. He is leading the way this pre season with his endurance. We are looking for Luke to play some good senior footy in 2011.He can run through the midfield and also reads the play very well in the forward half of the ground.

Michael Tanner
Michael joins Coburg after 4 years with Williamstown, Michael had a breakout season in 2010 which included 7 goals in the reserves Grand Final in 2010. Michael won the 2010 reserves B & F award and has been a fantastic leader in his time in the VFL. Michael can play at either end of the ground as a key forward or defender.

Nick Lynch
Nick rejoins Coburg after a two year absence where he was back playing with his local club Macleod in the NFL. Nick played as a marking type forward who kicked over 50 goals in both years back at Macleod. He reads the play very well as a forward and has experienced senior VFL football with the club back in 2008. He has come back very fit and the signs are promising for 2011.

-------------------------

There are several players who are also training with the club in anticipation of gaining a contract in 2011. Potter had the following to say about our pre season thus far

“ I have been very impressed with the group we have training, to have signed 35 players at this time of the year is an excellent result, we targeted certain players and  to have 9 players out of the TAC cup competition is a great result. Football Manager Craig Byron has done a terrific job in putting this list together. The other positive is there are still another young group of players who are hungry to join the list for 2011 and they are working extremely hard at training. We will be breaking up for Christmas on the 19th of December at Highgate with a function where all players and their families will be attending. There is a really clear expectation of what the players need to do over the break and I am looking forward to the rest of the pre season moving towards practice matches.”

It's all about defence Potter keen to tighten the screws

EXPECT the word "defence" to be scribbled on new Coburg Tigers coach Adam Potter's whiteboard this pre-season in capital letters.

The former Williamstown reserves coach is desperate to tighten the screws at the Richmond VFL affiliate after Coburg ranked third-last for goals conceded in 2010.

"Obviously being a part of an alignment with Richmond we'll align part of our game plan and our structures with them, but we're really looking to improve the defensive area of the game," Potter said.

The Tigers returned to the track on Wednesday after a three-week spell with their fitness levels delighting Potter.

The rookie coach and Ascot Vale school teacher said Coburg will again field a young line-up but expects 22 new faces when the squad is finalised.

The Tigers have snared nine players out of the TAC Cup, including four premiership players from the Calder Cannons.

But headlining the 2011 recruits is former Western Bulldogs rookie Jamason Daniels.

The explosive inside midfielder is expected to be a regular in the senior line-up while Potter brings with him Luke Cartelli and Michael Tanner from Williamstown.

That pair have both won reserves Seagulls best-and-fairests, while Tanner booted seven goals in last year's losing grand final.

Leading forward Nick Lynch returns after a two-year hiatus while former top-10 AFL draft pick Sam Power will again pull on the boots and coach the midfield.

Justin Kahlefedlt has re-signed after a breakout debut year and, along with Cartelli, is burning up the training track.

Potter wants the flashy Kahlefedlt, recruited from Southport last year, to win more contested ball and develop into an inside midfielder as he strives to win a birth on an AFL list

The Tigers will host four practice matches at Craigieburn's Highgate Recreation Reserve, starting with the Bendigo Bombers on March 5.

Tigers off to the beach

    * Sam Landsberger

COBURG is off to Anglesea next week for a two-night getaway as the Victorian Football League season draws closer.

The Tigers will drive to the beach-side location next Friday night for the bonding camp and to perfect new coach Adam Potter's gameplan.

Football manager Craig Byron said while Coburg would follow AFL partner Richmond's style of play, Potter had been granted permission to "add his own spin" to certain elements.

The club is also expected to choose its 2011 team leaders with Nick Carnell expected to again captain the side.

But Byron said Coburg was all but consigned to travelling without Richmond's rookies.

Pair Ben Jakobi, who was recruited from Coburg after a breakout 2010 under now-Richmond assistant-coach David Newett, and mature-age rookie Brad Miller are expected to play a big part in Potter's push for a finals berth this year but will be instructed to stay home.

Next week is Richmond's bye weekend under the split Round 1 format of this year's NAB Cup.

Potter said Coburg was not out to recruit anymore big names but focussing on "filling the end of the list" with local talent.

"We want to now give opportunities to guys from the Essendon District league and the Northern footy league to players who had a good season so they get the chance to perform at the next level," he said.

The former Williamstown reserves coach said finals were not being spoke about, rather the club wants to improve specific areas of its game.

Potter highlighted Coburg's inability to close out tight games last year, losing five by less than 10 points.

He said the balance between home games at Coburg City Oval (five matches) and Craigieburn's Highgate Reserve (four matches), home to dual TAC Cup premiers Calder Cannons, sits well with the Tigers.

"I think it's great that we can move VFL footy into the area of Craigieburn, which is a top-quality VFL-standard facility," he said.

Coburg's first practice match is against Bendigo on March 5 while Potter will make his coaching debut at Sandringham in the Round 1 TV clash.

Coburg Football Club
MEDIA RELEASE

Coburg faithful urged to get on board for Season 2011

The Coburg Football Club enters Season 2011 with a renewed sense of hope and optimism following a very successful preseason and better than expected financial result in 2010.

“With over seventy players vying for a place on the list, competition for spots has been fierce and we certainly believe finals football is a distinct possibility for us this year,” President Bill Balakis said today.

Senior Coach Adam Potter and his coaching staff continue to establish a strong and competitive team whilst off-field success and stabilising the Club remains a key priority for the Board.

The Coburg Football Club is about to embark one of the most intensive sponsorship drives in its history and I urge all businesses in our municipality to consider being part of this exciting growth phase. The Board has committed to several key strategies to ensure our long term success,” he said.

“Firstly we will play a pivotal role in partnering the Moreland City Council in redeveloping the Coburg City Oval so that it becomes more than just a football ground. In early March, we will move into our new administration base alongside the Coburg Cricket Club and the Victorian Women’s Football League at the Coburg City Oval and we look forward to sharing our iconic venue with the Moreland community well into the future.

Mayor, Cr. Oscar Yildiz, JP also confirmed the importance of the redevelopment of Coburg City Oval stating “The master plan for Coburg City Oval is a crucial part of the 2020 Coburg Initiative, which engages Council, the community and stakeholders like the Coburg Football Club in helping revitalise the look and feel of our municipality.”

Mr. Balakis announced, “We have strengthened our commitment to widening our supporter base by playing four games at the Highgate Recreation Reserve in Craigieburn where we also operate the new Highgate Function Centre. This is an opportunity to drive new revenues for the Coburg Football Club that we have not had in the past.”

“Finally we will look at all possibilities as to how we can remain as the Coburg Football Club well into the future. Throughout this year, we will put some options to our members as to how we could potentially structure the Club into the future, however our vision is firmly fixed on staying and playing in a strong and vibrant VFL competition,” Mr. Balakis said.

Recent reports suggest that traditional “stand-alone” VFL clubs could struggle to remain viable and competitive in the future. Given the ever changing nature of how football clubs operate, the Coburg Football Club will continue to look at ways to secure its future and its members, players, staff and partners will be closely consulted when any future options are considered. The Club is also buoyed by the recent announcement by the Chairman of AFL Victoria Ltd, Mr. Peter Jackson, that a 2012-2014 strategic plan and funding model will soon be developed to create certainty and stability for the VFL competition.

“My board’s legacy is to hand the Coburg Football Club on to the next generation of players, members and partners in a financially viable position. Just as on-field success is vital in 2011, so is the board’s commitment to securing the future of the Club”.

“In partnership with the AFL, Moreland and Hume City Council, local Government, key partners and our young playing group, I urge all supporters and potential partners to join us in securing our future. We have unprecedented support from our key stakeholders and wonderful support from our two Councils. We will approach Season 2011 with a renewed focus to ensure the Coburg Football Club continues to play a vital role in our local community. I urge everyone associated with our Club to get on board”.

President  Bill Balakis

Coburg’s our home, not Craigieburn – Balakis
by Sam Landsberger
Australian Rules/Footy
Brimbank Leader
17 Feb 2010

COBURG president Bill Balakis says Craigieburn’s Highgate Reserve is nothing more than an ``alternative playing facility’’ for the Tigers.

``Coburg is our home,’’ Balakis said today, despite the VFL Tigers’ AFL partner Richmond playing a key role in Highgate’s construction and declaring it wanted Coburg to play and train there.

``As long as I’m president - and you can put this in capitals mate - Coburg is home and will always be our home. Craigieburn is an alternative playing facility,’’ Balakis said.

The alignment between Richmond and Coburg appears destined to end, possibly after the 2011 season, Richmond coach Damien Hardwick declaring last week he wants the Tigers to field their own standalone club in the VFL.

Former Richmond chief executive Steven Wright said when the Highgate project, which boasts an MCG-sized facility that Richmond use extensively during pre-season, was announced it would ``enable our VFL aligned side, the Coburg Tigers, to train and play some of their matches at this new first class facility’’.

Coburg will play four of its nine home games in Craigieburn this year and Balakis, president for the past three years, oversaw the partial shift there in 2009, saying at the time: ``Part of the deal is to embrace the football people around the area, not to get them off-side. Realistically, it is our talent pathway as a second-tier football club so we don’t want to upset the apple cart.’‘

The Tigers played the first VFL home-and-away match against AFL-bound club the Gold Coast Suns at the new facility last year. A bumper crowd watched Coburg cruise to victory in code-hopper Karmichael Hunt’s first try at Australian rules football.

New coach Adam Potter praised the Craigieburn venue last week and said the five-four split of home matches between Highgate and Coburg’s spiritual home worked well.

``I think it’s great that we can move VFL footy into the area of Craigieburn, which is a top-quality VFL-standard facility,’’ Potter said.

Coburg hosts Casey, Bendigo Bombers, Frankston and premiers North Ballarat at its second home while Northern Bullants, Williamstown, Collingwood, Port Melbourne and Box Hill will travel to Coburg.

As far as I'm aware the deal with Craigieburn is with Richmond rather than Coburg. Coburg has to play so many games there because the RFC tells them to as part of the deal with Hume council.

All the sounds from both camps this week strongly suggest a decision has already been made and a plan for the splitting of both entities is in place.  By the tone of both sides comments I wouldn't say the decision has been totally amicable but I guess it never would have been.
