Coburg Tigers may can practice match (Hume Leader)

Tigers may can practice match
Hume Leader
by Sam Landsberger
8 Mar 11

COBURG football manager Craig Byron rates the Tigers just a “50-50” chance of playing its practice match at Craigieburn this week as the ground’s surface continues to struggle.

The Tigers hosted the Bendigo Bombers on Saturday in their first competitive hit-out but the match was shifted to Bulleen due to Highgate Recreation Reserve’s dangerous surface.

The wings of the ground are in top shape but the centre corridor remains a mess and did not receive enough heat over summer to properly grow.

Coburg is scheduled to host the Hawks but Byron will contact a host of venues including Visy Park, Skilled Stadium and Arden Street today if Craigieburn again fails its inspection.

The Tigers also looked at Whitten Oval but did not hear back from ground officials. Cricket fixtures meant Windy Hill was unavailable on Saturday and has Coburg City Oval and a heap of other grounds off limits.

Calder Cannons shifted their match on Saturday to Kilmore as the Craigieburn ground continues to wreck pre-season havoc for local sides.

“It’s frustrating,” Byron said.

“Richmond has been great to (let us train at Punt Rd), they barely say a word.

“The problem is if you play at (Craigieburn) it might compromise it for the week after.”

The Tigers fielded a young side on Saturday but will add a heap more experience this week.

Calder Cannons shifted their match on Saturday to Kilmore
That was at Assumption College and the Cannons played in Richmond jumpers.

According to BF the game has been moved to Waverley at a earlier time. RFC players playing are Gourdis, Thursty, Grimes, Tuck, Taylor, Nason, Browne, Webberley, Westhoff and maybe a couple of others.

Just further to the above Coburg is flogging Box Hill.

"Browne just took a nice contested mark and probably kicked Coburgs 5th for the quarter"

"Troy Taylor dominating ... has kicked 3.2 this 3rd quarter alone"

"currently 4 to none 5 min into the last qtr. Smashing"

Coburg play the Northern Bullants next Friday night at Princes Park. Interesting to see if we seek approval like Carlton is to play underdone players

Carlton has indicated that it will seek approval for some of its players to play in the Northern Bullants' VFL practice match against Coburg on Friday night at Visy Park for match fitness. Andrew Carrazzo and Bret Thornton are likely to play.

Hopefully we seek permission for our captain to play - he needs it big time. Seriously, based on Friday night and where his fitness levels appear to be there is no way he should play round one unless gets some game time in his legs

Sounds like some of our younger fringe players really want it. If our established senior players can't get their poo together I say drop them and stick some kids in who are going to give it their best. I'd prefer to get beaten watching a young player learn and improve that watch a player be careless and go backwards. No one should be safe. Now's the time to do it Dimma.

Match Report Coburg Vs Box Hill
Coburg Tigers website

In what turned out to be great conditions on the perfect Waverley Park surface Coburg Tigers headed into their second hit out for the year against Box Hill. 26 players in all were involved in the hit out with 11 Richmond listed and 15 Coburg listed players taking the field. Leigh Masters (Bendigo Pioneers) and Glenn Grgic (Northern Knights) both had their first hit out and showed they are very capable at senior level.

During the first quarter Coburg wasted several opportunities after going inside 50 on more than 12 occasions, Coburg failed to put enough score board pressure on and Box Hill ended up with a slender 8 point lead at the first change.

During the second quarter it was all Box Hill, Coburg made several turn over’s in the back half and Box hill ended up kicking 4 goals to 1 in the second term with Carnell adding Coburg’s only major.

Box Hill took a 30 point lead into the half time break, Thursfield had a very good 1st  half and rebounded several Box Hill attacks, he was being well supported by Ben Nason and Sam Power who were winning their fair share of ball through the midfield. During the 3rd term Coburg took advantage of 13 I 50’s to kick 6 goals for the quarter. Carnell kicked a brilliant goal from the boundary while Troy Taylor kicked 3 majors for the quarter. Coburg kept Box Hill to 1 goal for the quarter and took a 2 point lead at the break.

Coburg continued on where they left off in the 3rd term with Tuck, Brown and Carnell all kicking successive goals early in the term. Coburg continued on with their pressure through the midfield area and gave their forwards several opportunities. Coburg kicked 5 goals for the term and again defended well to keep Box Hill to 1 goal.

Coach Potter was very pleased with the second half but still thinks his side have a few areas where they can improve “we need to be better when sides start to get a run on and limit their scoring opportunities by playing strong defence. Our transition was poor in the second qtr and we had a similar issue at one stage late in the game against Bendigo last week.” Regular senior players from 2010 Nick Carnell, Sam Power, Ben Clifton, Justin Kahlefeldt and Damien Rayson all had their first hit out for the year and made positive contributions. Will Thursfield had an excellent game and Ben Nason also contributed well. “After two hit outs now the players are starting to understand what is expected, hopefully they learn a fair bit from the second half today and continue to improve heading into the season proper.  The good thing is we have exposed 4 first year players to the level in Willie Wheeler, Grgic, Masters and Rohan Hore have all shown positive signs at senior level.”

Scores

Coburg                  1.2          2.3          8.6          13.11 89

Box Hill                 2.4          6.9          7.10        8.11   59

Goals: Taylor 4, Carnell 3, Nason 2, Browne 2, Hore 1, Tuck 1.

Best Players: Will Thursfield, Ben Clifton, Ben Nason, Andrew Browne, Sam Power, Glenn Grgic

Coburg will now play their next practice match against the Northern Bullants at Visy Park at 5:00pm on Friday. Coburg will then have their season launch on Sunday the 20th of March at the Highgate function centre. Football Manager Craig Byron is looking forward to the season launch and made the following comment “This will be a great event to launch the 2011 season and we look forward to embracing the supporters of the Coburg Football Club. Some of our club legends will be in attendance and the current players have really embraced the history of the club and the past players on their camp to Anglesea and are looking forward to mixing with some of the club greats on Sunday.”
