Could the AFL's best defence lead the Tigers to a flag? Mick Stirling

4 July 2017Could Richmond actually win the premiership this year?
The Tigers are always going to get a bit of attention when they’re up and about, but no-one ever seriously thinks they can challenge for the flag, yet the numbers are suggesting otherwise.
While there’s a couple of superstars in the midfield and a forward line that puts on enough pressure to turn coal into diamonds, the key to Richmond’s September chances is in the back half.
The Tigers’ defence is statistically the best in the AFL at the moment and similar to some other dominant teams of recent times.
“Teams that win premierships have got great defences,” Garry Lyon pointed out on Footy Classified on Monday night.
“‘Points against’ they sit third, ‘opposition goals per inside 50’ they’re number one, ‘points conceded from turnovers’ they’re number one and ‘points conceded from stoppages’ they’re number one.
“Look at the Hawthorn of 2015 – they’re scarily similar.
“This is a magnificent building block when you look at those numbers.
As good as those numbers are, come finals time and a whole new pressure builds on Richmond who haven’t won in the first week of September since 1982.
