The discussion about Richmond on Footy Classified on Monday night:

Could the AFL's best defence lead the Tigers to a flag?
Mick Stirling

Could Richmond actually win the premiership this year?

The Tigers are always going to get a bit of attention when they’re up and about, but no-one ever seriously thinks they can challenge for the flag, yet the numbers are suggesting otherwise.

While there’s a couple of superstars in the midfield and a forward line that puts on enough pressure to turn coal into diamonds, the key to Richmond’s September chances is in the back half.

The Tigers’ defence is statistically the best in the AFL at the moment and similar to some other dominant teams of recent times.

“Teams that win premierships have got great defences,” Garry Lyon pointed out on Footy Classified on Monday night.

“‘Points against’ they sit third, ‘opposition goals per inside 50’ they’re number one, ‘points conceded from turnovers’ they’re number one and ‘points conceded from stoppages’ they’re number one.

“Look at the Hawthorn of 2015 – they’re scarily similar.

“This is a magnificent building block when you look at those numbers.

As good as those numbers are, come finals time and a whole new pressure builds on Richmond who haven’t won in the first week of September since 1982.

Journo forgot about '95 and '01 but hey - who gives a stuff?
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Nothing really to do with Richmond but Judd will replace Garry Lyon on Footy Classified next year.

Kane "Richmond are Port's great rival" Cornes will be back-up.

Caro just said as they sit there tonight Lynch will play.

There's still a session to get through tomorrow and if the Club goes conservative then Balta will play instead.

Either way there will be two Tiger debutants and she expects Weller to play.

Lloyd said resolving our 2nd tall forward/ruck is what stands between Richmond and another flag.

He hopes Balta plays in round 1 to see what he can do in the real stuff (after his 3rd qtr vs Melb in the JLT) as if Lynch, Riewoldt & Nankervis play then there's no room in the side for him. Caro says it's a win-win situation.

Lloyd expects Carlton to give it there best shot but we'll be too strong in the end for them.

Balts should play regardless. It's not as if he's some lumbering spud who would only ever play ones due to his height
