Demons eye four main draft hopefuls
Emma Quayle | October 1, 2008

FOUR players remain in the mix for Melbourne's No. 1 draft pick, with Sandringham ruckman Tyrone Vickery the late-season contender.

Vickery, who returned from a knee reconstruction this season, has pushed up alongside key forward Jack Watts and West Australians Nick Naitanui and Daniel Rich at the top of this year's pecking order.

Watts remains the favourite to be snared at No. 1, but midfielder Rich is also in strong contention and Melbourne recruiting manager Barry Prendergast said yesterday that the quartet of distinctly different players was difficult to split.

Chris Yarran and Stephen Hill, midfielders Hamish Hartlett, Steele Sidebottom and Jack Ziebell and talls Michael Hurley, Jackson Trengove and Shaun McKernan also considered among the top prospects.

Pick 8 :
1 - Vickery if available. Has the potential to be a ruckman foward in the Ottens template
2 - Ziebel if available. Good size midfielder who can play outside or inside
3 - Trengrove. We still need a big KP backman. At 196cm he could be our man. In the long term I see Thurstfield taking more the speedy medium sized fowards (Robertson, Fisher, O'Keefe, Jones), Rance the big but not overally fast CHF's (Riewoldt, Brown), McGuane the big bastards when playing deep and resting ruckman (Jolly, Pavlich) and Moore the Mr Fix it playing a variety of roles. With the run Rance, Moore and McGuane give, there is no reason why we can't have Rance, McGuane, Thurstfield, Moore and Trengrove in the same team. Ps i dont see Schultz being a long term defender

Pick 26:
1 - Robinson: A big 19 year old
2 - Rockliffe: Not really what we need at the moment, but a running small foward similar to Chapman could be an the foil for Morton over the next 10 years

Pick 42: Trade with a Schultz or a Polo for an upgraded late 2nd rounder or early 3rd rounder

Pick 35 odd: Best available ruckman

Pick 58: Pass

Then maybe take an uncontracted played in the PSD

There's a 6-round mock draft on allfooty.com

http://www.allfooty.info/2008/09/2008-afl-mock-draft-6-rounds-with.html

Here's their RFC selections:

8 Richmond - Tyrone Vickery (200cm, 86kg, ruckman/tall forward)
Richardson and Simmonds are getting closer to the end of their playing days, and Vickery will be able to help up forward and in the ruck.

26 Richmond - Neville Jetta (178cm, 75kg, midfielder/small forward)
In this mock, and possibly in the real draft too, the Tigers went big in round 1 and can go small with later picks.

42 Richmond - Ashley Smith (185cm, 84kg, small defender)
The Tigers might want Newman or Raines in the middle more, and a small defensive role would then be available. Smith could be someone that Richmond thinks can play there.

58 Richmond - Zach Sengstock (191cm, 85kg, tall defender)
Not really a big draft need, as they still have Rance to debut while players like Thursfield and McGuane have been effective and can keep improving, but another tall defender could be useful with Bowden now old and Polak injured.

74 Richmond - Ryan McKenzie (175cm, 73kg, small defender/forward)
Maybe not a midfielder at AFL level, at least not initially, but could be useful in a pocket at either end of the field. As a defender, he could get a lot of the ball and be an important link in getting the ball going forward. He has also shown the ability to go on a streak up forward, kicking several goals in a short amount of time, and that is a good quality to have.

90 Richmond - Liam Jones (192cm, 84kg, tall forward)
Several years away but could become a useful centre half forward or even a centre half back.

I am warming to the idea of Vickey, would not be too sad if he was to end up with us.

Pattison - Vickey - Putt would be 3 developing decent rucks. maybe rookie another one and our ruck stocks seem fairly healthy.

Compared to the Knobel, Ray Hall daysat least.

Doubt he wil last now.
too many teams before us in the draft and too much media on Vickery of late.

I heard port are really keen also with a ageing brogen, lade and a rubbish Ruckman in Deluca
Currently a member of the Roupies, and employed by the great man Roup.

Watts has basically let out of the bag today he's No 1.

1. Melb - Watts
2. WCE - Rich
3. Freo - Naitanui
4. Port - Vickery
5. Ess - Yarran
6. Carl - Hurley
7. Bris -  ?
8. Rich -  ?

Looks like we'll have a few good kids to choose from - Hartlett, Ziebell or Sidebottom if we want a mid; Trengove or McKernan if we want a big KPP.

Welcome to OER Ball!  :)

I could live with all that :thumbsup. A Roughead could slip to the upgraded pick.

Ch 10 news said the recruiters are claiming this year is the strongest draft since 2001 superdraft.

Mind you they say that every year so we shall see.

I think they will be comparing last years draft with the 2001 crop with Kruezer, Cotchin, Morton, Rioli, Palmer and the like already performing.

As always time will tell on the strength of any draft year

Brisbane will go Hartlett or Sidebottom or maybe pull a surprise and go Blease, meaning we could choose from all three of Hartlett, Sidebottom or Ziebell in that order of preference.

True TT. Ziebell is closer to the type we need but Hartlett is the classier of the 3 IMO.

Interesting to see if Sidebottom's slow 20m sprint takes some of the gloss from his GF blitz.

Do you know what time he ran MT?
