Angus Graham - 2011 expectations?
« on: January 10, 2011, 09:58:36 AM »
It's less than 4 weeks until our first preseason game so a good time to look at individual players heading into 2011.

First up is Gus. He played 15 games in 2010 to take his total to 33 all up since being picked up in the 2005 rookie draft.

What are your expectations for Gus this year and what would be a good year from him?

Career so far:

          Games    K     H      D     M     HO    T     G.B
2006:      -
2007:      2      1.5   1.5   3.0   1.0    8.5   2.0   0.0
2008:      -
2009:     16     2.9   6.5   9.4   3.4   14.2   2.9   5.3
2010:     15     4.2   6.5  10.7   3.1  19.2   3.4   6.4

22 games if fully fit. Push back to help the defenders a bit more ala Benny Gale and take at least 5 marks a game (he needs to get a lot better with his marking). Just needs to work his ar$e off basically  :-\

I think he got too big last year and his leap and fitness suffered. But he has trimmed down now, so hopefully he jumps higher and runs further like he did in 2009. He does need to work on his body work and marking though

He needs to improve on 10.7 disposals per game, he really needs to improve on 19.2 hitouts per game and he really really needs to improve on 3.1 marks per game.

As Ed said "Just needs to work his ar$e off basically".

Bingo  :thumbsup

Outside of that needs to take more contested marks as well

So here we have a 23 years Old Ruckman in Angus Grahram

Career so far:

          Games    K     H      D     M     HO    T     G.B
2006:      -
2007:      2      1.5   1.5   3.0   1.0    8.5   2.0   0.0
2008:      -
2009:     16     2.9   6.5   9.4   3.4   14.2   2.9   5.3
2010:     15     4.2   6.5  10.7   3.1  19.2   3.4   6.4

And lets look at the the best big man for the last decade at the same age

2001:     17     3.6   4.1   7.7    2.2   10.8  1.1   2.2
2002:     19     5.1   5.1  10.2   4.3   16.2   0.9  7.1
2003      19     6.6   4.6  11.2   3.9    17.5  0.6  10.3
2004:     23     7.5  6.2   13.7   5.1    22.3  1.6  5.10

Now I am not saying big Gus will be a Dean Cox but if you must be able to see the trends for big guys. Give him a go , he has had injury which slowed him down and therefore has nowhere near the same number of games as Dean Cox but his stats are not far off at same age.

Wouldnt it be nice if he followed the same trend as big Cox.  Ok I am dreaming but if he keeps improving he just might be our guy.

Here , kitty kitty. Here , kitty kitty.   AAAUGH!

Yeah ruckman should be able to run 10 second 100's, jump and reach of 3.5m and get 30 possessions a game  8)

Not having a crack at you Fluffy but personally I hate these stats comparing players when they were at the same age. Cox is a Cox, Gus is Gus. Gus will never have the ability of a Dean Cox (I know you didn't say that). Cox is athletic, is a good kick and has a nice pair of hands and he's an intelligent player. Gus isn't going to pick up those attributes anytime soon, IMO. He has improved a lot but I don't see him ever being much more than a depth player when we're challenging for top 4.
BrownE is a similar type to him, he's just a lot more talented. I reckon BrownE will play a fair few games next season if he's got his fitness up.

I think it is make or break for Gus next season. Might not seem like it but he's in strife if Vickery, the new dude and Browne get picked over him. Only 22 games is acceptable from Graham.

As i keep saying ruckman don't have to be stars. As long as they are at least 2m tall and can compete in ruck, have reasonable skill, athletism and strength and compete around the ground then you are doing your job. If you find a superstar then thats a rare bonus  8)

Contested marking is also very important. I don't think Gus offers anywhere near enough in that area...

You do know Cox was a rookie and wasn't always the athletic gun ruckman you've seen him turn into

No poo sherlock. :clapping I also know that Richo wasn't 100 kilos when we drafted him :shh Cox could hardly run a 400 when he first got to West Coast. Fact is though when fit he's always been a good athlete. Gus isn't and never will be.
