Rivals renew interest in flag Tiger after Blues cool on free agent

CARLTON has delivered a stunning backflip on the eve of finals, pulling out of the race for Richmond free agent Brandon Ellis.

Despite courting the premiership wingman for much of the season, the Blues have withdrawn their interest to focus on a pursuit of other trade targets.

Rival clubs and industry figures have become aware of the Ellis situation and his sudden availability after many had viewed the Blues as a clubhouse leader for the Tiger's services throughout the season.

It is believed the Blues' call on Ellis came late last week, even before they were denied another big target in Stephen Coniglio, who recommitted to the Giants on Tuesday.

The Blues had been confident of landing Coniglio, who was being chased with a monster deal of up to $1.3 million per season and up to $2 million for the first season alone.

Gold Coast is coming hard at Ellis in an attempt to attract senior experience, with rivals now closely monitoring his intentions after previously anticipating he was due to land at the Blues.

Brisbane also enquired about the 26-year-old last year while he was under contract at the Tigers, before the explosion of youngsters Hugh McCluggage and Jarrod Berry.

As a top-10 earner at the Tigers this season, Ellis is a restricted free agent.

As revealed by AFL.com.au in July, Ellis had decided to park all negotiations until season's end to assess his free agency options.

Coniglio's recommitment leaves Ellis as one of few sought-after free agents in this year's crop. Others include Adam Tomlinson, Jamie Elliott and Todd Goldstein.

Sam Edmund in the Herald-Sun saying not surprisingly that Ellis is gone at the end of the season.

---------------------------------

The soon-to-be restricted free agent is keen to secure a better deal after eight seasons at Punt Road. Carlton were interested in bringing Ellis to Ikon Park, but have since changed their mind, while Ellis is now also keen on other options. Gold Coast and St Kilda have been linked to the 26-year-old, but another Melbourne-based finalist has just started showing interest.

BRANDON ELLIS

Carlton pulled the rug out from under him after a season of chasing the free agent hard. The Ellis camp feels let down by Carlton’s process, but other suitors have emerged including Gold Coast. Hawthorn has missed out on Stephen Coniglio. Would they be interested given Jarman Impey’s ACL recovery and their free cap space.

If Rioli had a different surname this forum would demand his Capuano papers for that effort on the wing where Houli smashed it out to him and it was Cotch and a Lion coming the other way....I suppose too much time can do things to a man....:shh

Did a few good things did Daniel but also reeked of human excrement on numerous occasions too. Never really gets called out for it, only a few do. Ah well

kumbaya i'm stoned btw amen

Maybe Brandi can score him a locker next to his at visy park   :shh

think you'll find it's down to us and GC. he is getting a godfather offer from the fat man's football department..... :shh

Pretty much the same commentary as the above but with the title "Blues leave Tiger Ellis in limbo"

-----------------------------------------------------

Brandon Ellis's future is up in the air after Carlton pulled out of a bid to secure the uncontracted Tiger.

Richmond is unlikely to match a rival club's offer for the 26-year-old free agent given its salary cap squeeze.

... other suitors have emerged including Gold Coast. Hawthorn is another potential suitor after missing out on Stephen Coniglio.

If he is such a gun why aren’t clubs lining up??... I hope Gold Coast don’t pull out!!

I can just see us getting stuck with him again next year.

Mitch Cleary on SEN gave an update on Ellis' trade status.

Brandon Ellis

“The Gold Coast are pretty confident on this one.

There’s a few clubs sniffing around here in Melbourne, but I think they’ve got the most money on the table for Ellis.

Ellis won’t be at Richmond next year.”
