there really is a chasm between Martin and Butler. He may well be a bit overrated but he is a far better player than Butler and playing in a team that gets belted each week with little help around him.Reckon his last two seasons have been pretty decent considering.
It always makes me laugh at just how blinkered we are  when it comes to our own overrate  and oppo players underrate.

Some under rate our players and over rate the oppositions if you believe that

DAN BUTLER

Rival clubs continue to ask how the Blues will get so many deals done if they land all their preferred targets, with Carlton interested in Butler (who has had a Carlton medical), Eddie Betts, Tom Papley and Jack Martin. Butler is an extremely handy player but has still only kicked 20 goals in 13 VFL games this year and five in seven in the AFL so he’s a good player with solid pressure, not a transformative talent.

Dan Butler (Richmond)

Fresh contract at Carlton will help the 2017 premiership forward get over a $600 fine for striking in Sunday’s VFL flag.

Tiger faces tough call on Blues move

Sam Landsberger
Herald Sun
September 30, 2019

Richmond forward Dan Butler wants to stay at Punt Rd but concedes that decision is “out of his hands”.

Butler, 23, met Carlton recently and will shortly jet to Thailand and Bali on Richmond’s footy trip with his future in limbo.

The clever goalsneak starred in the club’s VFL premiership, but played just one AFL game after the mid-season bye as he was squeezed out of the best 22.

Butler booted 21.16 from 15 VFL games, where he averaged a healthy 15.7 disposals and 92 SuperCoach points.

But with teenage sensation Jack Higgins making a bright start to his rehabilitation from serious brain surgery, and a growing chance to return to the field in the first half of 2020, it could be tough for Butler to fight his way back.

“I obviously got dropped a few times but I just wanted to go back to VFL and really buy into the program and play my role there and it ended up being a premiership,” Butler told the Herald Sun.

“I’m obviously out of contract, so hopefully I can find out in the next couple of weeks what I’m doing.

“I’m not 100 per cent sure yet. I’ve got a few big decisions to make — but I love this club, and I’d love to stay here.

“I’d love to stay, but it’s probably a bit out of my hands at the moment.

“Obviously, I want to play AFL footy, so that’s going to come into my decision, but this is just such a great club and it’s given me so many opportunities and I wouldn’t be here today without them.

“I’ve obviously got to make some big decisions at the end of the year.”

Butler — who played in the 2017 AFL flag — watched Saturday’s triumph at the MCG with injured teammate Jack Graham and was thrilled housemates Jayden Short and Liam Baker went home with medallions.

Butler’s defensive pressure remains his standout asset while he was also happy at boosting his disposal count this season.

I didnt like that he went to look at Carltons facilities  but if he wants to stay and fight for a place then Im happy for him to stay now and have a crack at it. Our players should avoid visiting other clubs mid season its not a good look.

Like when Martin toured North and had lunch with their senior players.

It's just a free lunch, I wouldn't say no either haha.

If Butler goes, all the best mate. Has a AFL and VFL medal, deserves both. Keeps a little heat on guys like George and Rioli etc.

Nobody can say he never gave his all on the field, it has been hard to get into the side and if it looks like you are gonna play VFL all year you can't blame a bloke for looking around

Exactly. Should never have done it
Thankfully he came to his senses and stayed at Punt Road.
He is a legend now and probably 1 flag away from being an immortal when he finishes his career.

Neil Balme: Dan Butler is a very good player and we'd love him to stay. But there's a commercial reality in the game and we'll have to be realistic about that.

Small forward Dan Butler has been linked with a move to Carlton and Balme can see it ending up as a similar situation to Ellis.

“I honestly don’t know the circumstances there, but he hasn’t been able to get a game, he’s a very good player, we’d love him to stay, but if something like that happens, that’s probably best for him as well, but we’ll deal with that as it comes along,” he said.

“There’s a commercial reality in the game. We can only have a certain amount on the list, we’ve only got a certain amount to pay and a certain amount we can play in the team so we have got to be realistic about that sort of stuff.”
