Jake King arrest will cast a cloud over Dustin Martin deals

The Rover

The arrests yesterday of former Richmond players Jake King and Ty Vickery is having an immediate effect on one of the biggest stories in football – Dustin Martin’s playing future.

King in particular is good friends with Martin, and both share a worrying connection to outlaw motorcycle gangs.

Add to that Martin’s father Shane, who has been banned entry into the country, and warning bells are ringing loud in recruiting departments around the land.

What may have been a bit of marketable colour in Dusty’s private life has suddenly become a very real, culture-destroying concern that already has clubs reassessing trade strategies.

Not surprisingly no-one’s going on record, but the suggestion was made on Wednesday night that Nat Fyfe’s phone is going to be running hot as clubs turn to a “trouble-free superstar option”.

I suppose it comes down to whether you want a player loved by his teammates or loved by the police.

Personally I’m not so sure the choice is clear.

Okay here it is:

Barrett reckons Dusty isn't re-signing because his manager Ralph Carr is still angry about what happened with Richmond in 2013 (leading to the GWS visit and all that). Carr "fell out" with the Richmond hierarchy. However, when GWS and all other clubs pulled out, Dusty had to re-sign with Richmond for lesser money than what was originally offered by the Tigers (we took our original offer off the table during the 2013 negotiations). Dusty re-signed in 2015 but did so knowing he'll be a free agent in 2017. Carr is directly involved in the current negotiations and according to Barrett, Carr has a long memory and is still angry with the RFC.

@barrettdamian has reported that Martin is holding Richmond at bay because that is what the club did to him four years ago. #9AFLFootyShow

What a pathetic story. How this guy gets paid to write and or say this crap is beyond belief. None story and attention seeking from this flog. I have no doubt Dusty will sign on and remain a Tiger.

Well I thought it was a superb article and sincerely hope the entire football world take note.... :shh

Yep, Dusty should be happy we're even considering re-signing him and take a pay cut. $600,000 p.a seems fair?

They have to make formal offers and we can match them if we want. How do you know their cheque books are bigger?
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

Come on. I doubt  we would match a grandfather offer, nor be in a position to do so

North, Bombers, Saints haven't got bigger cheque books?

If Kelly leaves as I suspect he will who knows what GWS will throw at Martin.

All the talk is that he is staying, but im not so sure with what's been floating around lately
