It wasn't the reason for the loss but dodgy umpiring early in the 3rd quarter gave the Dees two goals and the scoreboard momentum.

Taranto free against that wasn't. Lead to a Melbourne goal.

Followed by Dow being tackled to the ground without the ball (just before this clip starts). No free and another Melbourne goal.
https://x.com/AFL/status/1915365442866077775

The free to Taranto just before half-time was also dodgy.

The standard of umpiring is in crisis while the AFL is in denial because they are to blame. Nathan Williamson the main culprit last night but they were all terrible.

I don't like commenting on umps as it makes me sound like a whinger, but totally agree with these comments. Has me yelling at the screen at the time.  :banghead

I don’t know what you’re talking about, the game has never been umpired better. The four umpire system is working well, there’s no inconsistency at all. The research conducted by the umpires department has concluded that the umpires are exceeding expectations

100%
I heard that the AFL are considering giving the umpires bigger louder whistles, adding a specialist
5th umpire and implementing a 2 interchange umpire system.
The umpires will then get SuperCoach points depending on number of free kicks, dodgy bounces etc.

And a brownlow night for umpires , votes from umpires for umpires , a banner , a cheer squad , and wait for it , umpire police to eject any person from the ground found criticising the angelic centre pieces of the game ,  come on people  you know you want it!

Since the umpires are mic'd up for the television audience, why not send that mic signal to the PA system so that everybody can hear the whistle & calls from the umpires?  Obviously a sound guy has to monitor the level of the mic to cut out swears & to stop it from being too loud (eg STAND! four times a minute), but hearing the whistle  & instructions over the PA would cut down the confusion.  The umpires would no longer have to yell at the players or get up close to make themselves heard.
Half the crowd automatically disagree with the umpire anyway & that wont change, but having his calls made public could cut down on the frivolous & ridiculous calls that are being made.  To make their call & explain it publicly puts the onus back on the umpire to keep it fair.  If it changes the way decisions are made it could only be good for everybody!
Rugby & soccer umps address the crowd through the PA, why not AFL umps too?  Also, players can't pretend to not hear the whistle when its coming through the PA!
Pair up the video replay with the umpire's audio & allow the umpire to change his call if it is proven to be wrong!  We get a ball up instead of highway robbery!
This is the 21st century, get with the times & use the technology to our advantage!

So it was going to be a free kick if one of the teams had kicked the ball away, but it turned into a ball-up when they were told it was the other team who did it :huh3. They're just making the rules up as they go :lol.

"I just got word!"

Really?  From where?
Divine intervention/inspiration?
Magical Elves?
Your boss in the earpiece?

I only ask because I can't recall the AFL telling us about the 'Umpire's Little Helper!'      :-\

Last night proved what we have all suspected for a while. The person in the earpiece is controlling the game. Have been for years but the AFL have been lying to the public about it. I have no doubt the Tom Lynch goal in that final against Brisbane was affected by the man on the Microphone... It's choreography no better then married at first site. But it's worse because there is gambling involved.

that Kane has made the game worse than it has ever been. Seriously how bad is she? She certainly did get the gig because she is female, because there is no way on this planet she is the best there was.

absolute balls up. Its a shame soccer doesnt take off in this country i would love nothing mre than to see soccer take some gloss over these imbeciles which only then we may see some meaningful change.

Totally agree. She had a chance when she took over from Scott and by extension SHocking to get rid of the worst rule the game has seen in the stand rule and hasn't. And this week's she done the rounds saying the game's in "great shape". It isn't

Lots of rules need a fix up or shake up.

Stand.
Deliberate out of bounds.
Rushed behind.
HTB.
Players deliberately drawing high contact for frees.

You left out legal tackles that get you a free kick but also three weeks suspension.

Ah yes the Lindsay Thomas rule. Similar to the Toby green rule.

AFL admits umps got it wrong in “suspicious” decision

Speaking to the Herald Sun, Laura Kane said: “The field umpire who is the controlling umpire, in error, blows the whistle and calls a free kick to North Melbourne for time delay.

“Another field umpire, or the support umpire through their ‘comms’ (earpiece communication) says ‘No it wasn’t Essendon’ (player who kicked the ball after the whistle).

“Upon review, we can now look back and it (should have been) a free kick to Essendon for time delay by North Melbourne.

“It is complicated, but what we are pleased with is the free kick did not go to North Melbourne and that it (original call) was cancelled.

“But you can clearly see looking at the vision now, it is a time delay free kick and should have been paid to Essendon.”
