Cotchin confirmed Dustin Martin had picked up his car from the MCG after he famously left it at the car park for weeks after the grand final.

"It's not at the 'G anymore. He did pick it up and he actually went and picked it up himself, so that was a surprise," Cotchin said.

Nick Turner, studio manager at Celebrity Ink, Highpoint, Melbourne, said the Tigers’ Dustin Martin has become a poster boy for tattoos in Australia – just as soccer ace David Beckham had done in the UK.

Martin has a collection of tattoos starting from his neck down to his legs, including an impressive mix of female portraits.

“Yeah, absolutely Dustin Martin,” Mr Turner said.

2. DUSTIN MARTIN (RICH)

Decade stats: 224 games, 250 goals, 2x premiership, 2x Norm Smith, 1x Brownlow, 3x All-Australian, 2x club B&F

If Franklin has revolutionised the forward position, Martin has done so for the midfield position.

Due to the emergence of the likes of Martin, teams rarely employ small midfielders like generations past, with the prototype being powerful players in the Martin mold.

Unlike some of the others on this list, Martin's entire career has spanned this decade, after he was drafted third overall by the Tigers in the 2009 draft.

While he was an inconsistent performer earlier on in his career, Martin's rise to prominence has coincided with that of his team to becoming a powerhouse.

As evidenced by his pair of Norm Smith Medals, Martin is the AFL's ultimate big-game performer, and has become a renowned finals specialist over the past few seasons.

"He's a big-time big-game player," Lloyd said.

"In 2017, he had what Leigh Matthews described as the greatest season the game has ever seen. But then to be able to back it up in 2019 is incredible. To win two Norm Smith Medals in the last three years is a fantastic achievement.

"We talk about Buddy being unique, but I think it's hard to describe a player like Dustin Martin as well.

"I love that he kicks goals, I don't think enough midfielders in our game kick goals. His ability to go forward and create chaos sets him apart."

Lloyd praised Martin for his ability to rise in big moments and compared his penchant for doing so to his former Essendon captain James Hird.

"His big-game performances remind me of something I loved about James Hird, whether it was Norm Smith Medals or ANZAC Day Medals," he said.

"I think Dustin Martin has a resume that stands above any midfielder in this last decade. Others might have more All-Australian appearances, but to win two Norm Smiths in two Grand Final appearances is phenomenal."

From the Maldives to Melbourne: Unlikely friends Dusty and Serena to catch up during Aus Open

January 11, 2020
AAP/FOX SPORTS

One has 23 major titles, a baby and boasts her own line of “strong, sexy and sophisticated” clothing.

The other has two AFL flags, neck tattoos and counts Sam Newman as a friend.

But Serena Williams and Dustin Martin will renew their unlikely friendship this month in Melbourne alongside this month’s Australian Open having forged a bond while holidaying in the Maldives last year.

Williams revealed the meeting of tennis and Australian Rules’ finest on her Instagram account in November.

Martin was pictured sipping drinks while Williams’ partner Alexis Ohanian played music at an exclusive poolside resort in Williams’ Instagram story.

Until now, disbelieving Australians among Williams’ near 12 million Instagram followers were left none the wiser as to their friendship.

On Friday, after dispatching Germany’s Laura Siegemund to reach the semi-finals of Auckland’s ASB Classic, Williams revealed the friendship blossomed after an introduction.

“He’s friends with one of my best friends and they were there and he was there,” Williams explained.

“He’s super athletic. We did some watersport and he killed me in it.

“I was like ‘ahh – I’m not even gonna try. This is my off season!’

“He’s a great guy. I loved hanging out with him.”

Williams has maintained contact, saying, “We definitely plan on catching up”.

Serena reveals why a reunion with Dusty in Melbourne is unlikely

By Sarah Black
afl.com.au
20 January 2020

IT WAS the most unlikely of holiday friendships.

Tennis legend Serena Williams posted an Instagram story of her holiday in the Maldives last year, initially focusing on husband Alexis Ohanian's attempts to DJ, before her phone captured someone very familiar to the football world.

It was none other than Richmond superstar Dustin Martin, fresh from his second Norm Smith and premiership medals, who was casually sipping a drink and hanging out with tennis royalty.

Fresh from a comfortable first-round win over Anastasia Potapova at the Australian Open on Monday, Williams was reminded of just what town she was in when asked about her holiday with "Dusty".

While Tigers skipper Trent Cotchin is a regular in world No.1 and mad Tiger fan Ash Barty's player box, fans keen to catch a glimpse of the bullocking midfielder in Williams' entourage will be disappointed.

"It was just by chance. We met in Maldives. He just happened to be there. We just hung out. We had a blast," Williams said at her press conference.

"We decided he couldn't come to the Australian Open because he would be mobbed way too much. So it was, like, if we could hang out, it would be cool. But definitely not in Melbourne Park or here. It would be way too crazy for him."

And even the queen of tennis knows just how much of a big deal the Tiger is in Melbourne.

"Yeah, for sure (Williams recognises his profile). That's why we were, like, not here. He can't do everyday things like that. He's way too recognisable. I think everyone would go nuts if they saw him," she said.

"It would be really crazy for him. Yeah, it's cool. He's so good at his job, it's insane.

"It's so cool to get to know other athletes that are so good at their craft and almost just get to talk to them and see what makes them so good."

Was thinking about this and how you would describe Dusty to an American.
Best comparison would be with the NFL.

2 X Superbowl
2 X MVP in those superbowls
1 X player of the year.  Not really an NFL equivalent as they give it to the flashiest player ie QB and running backs. Heisman trophy for College player of the year would be closest.

Closest player this year would be Patrick Mahomes (the Kansas City QB) as the press Player of the Year but again Dusty has the flash of a QB and the power of a Running Back like Derrick Henry (Tennesee Titans back).
The record for MVP awards for superbowls (Norm Smith) goes to Tom Brady with 4 from 6 wins on 9 attempts. Joe Montana has 3 from 4 wins on 4 attempts. Personally I've always loved Joe ("Joe Cool") Montana and can't really relate to Brady.

The term "beast mode" has been used by some to describe Dusty, in homage to the power running back Marshawn Lynch, but he didn't win the award for best player in his best years.

Guess you could say he has the power of a Derrick Henry with the skills of a Patrick Mahomes.

Richmond's 3rd best forward: Dustin Martin

What a luxury it is for Martin to strut forward whenever he seemingly pleases. He is arguably the best one-on-one player inside 50 in the competition. When your best midfielder kicks 12 goals in a finals series, you know you have a serious attacking weapon on your hands. 'Dusty' now has three 30-plus season goal returns on the trot.

Sam Lloyd retains strong friendships with his Punt Road teammates, tagging along with Dustin Martin in 2016 and 2017 to footy’s night of nights.

“The first Brownlow was good, we didn’t have a Grand Final to play,” he quips of what was surely an epic celebration.

“The second one dragged on but it was good to see him win, that was something I will never forget. Mate, you have seen what he can do as a player but what a lot of people don’t see is the kind of person he is from the outside.

“They can throw judgments at him from a distance, but he is one of the kindest, most caring guys you will ever meet and all in that he’s a pretty good footballer and they are pretty lucky to have him down there.”

Martin’s contempt for the media is well-known, but doesn’t it mean the fans don’t get to see his true character?

“Yeah, I can see that. It’s his persona as well that people love,” Lloyd says.

“I would say it might be disappointing for everyone because he’s completely different to what is portrayed at times but he doesn’t mind. He has done a lot of work on who is around him and the people that surround him and that’s all he would care about.”
