36: Jackson Thurlow

“Jackson has stood out to AFL club recruiting staff this season with his ability to kick the ball very well and make good decisions in traffic, along with this his cleanness of hands both off the ground and in the air,” said Mathew Armstrong, AFL Tasmania’s High Performance Manager.

38. North Melbourne – Matthew McDonough

Height: 180cm, Weight: 85kg

Recruited from: Woodville-West Torrens

McDonough is a solid small forward who kicks plenty of goals.

He had a very strong championships for SA kicking 17 goals across the 5 games, including two hauls of six and with a strong body should be pushing for senior selection from next season.

St Kilda selection #41

LIAM MCBEAN
DOB: 25/08/94
Height: 203cm
Weight: 84kg
Club: Calder Cannons/Vic Metro

Happy to see Liam slip through to us at pick 41, we believe he has all the traits to impact at AFL level in a few years time.   :clapping  Will be great to watch McBean and McEvoy alternating forward and in the ruck in a couple of years time.

Kevin Sheehan says: "Lightly framed ruckman/key defender who can win the ball in the air and at ground level. Very agile player who is gifted athletically and makes good decisions with the football. Is an accurate shot for goal when he goes forward. Played mainly as a key defender in 2012 AFL U18s Champs where he’s still developing his game. Dangerous as a tall forward."

Not many articles floating around on McBean at the moment, but can read some more below.

Was never getting past pick 41! This kid is a ripper, was considering him instead of Carter at pick 26, but decided to take a risk and it paid off  :cheers Very agile, great kick of the footy  :thumbsup

Would love him to be taken with #43 on draft day though  :cheers

42. North Melbourne – Lewis Pierce

Height: 202cm, Weight: 87kg

Recruited from: Dandenong Stingrays

North are arguably in need of some long term ruck depth, and Pierce is a long term project with a lot of potential upside.

Pick 43 Richmond

Name: Shane Nelson
Position: Midfielder
Age (by draft day): 19
Height: 178cm
Weight: 70kg

Shane was overlooked in last seasons draft but has has a Stella season for WAFL club West Perth.
He is only small but is super quick and highly skilled, could easily become our next Foley (with better skills) very quickly.

It was expected Nelson would be recruited 15-30 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, but an illness suffered on the eve of last year's combine saw him lose 7kg, limiting his involvement in the testing.

Below is last seasons draft profile........

Quick Notes on Shane Nelson
Kicks goals
Solid skills
Has pace
Breaks lines
Fit
Strong overhead
Potential First round draft pick

Shane Nelson in detail
Shane Nelson is a fast link up player who breaks the lines and delivers the football to dangerous areas to great effect.

Nelson is one of the fittest players to be drafted this year. When you combine his pace with great endurance it allows a player to rack up some pretty big numbers in terms of possessions and with Nelson you know most of his possessions are moving the ball forwards.

Nelsons skills are a talking point, some say he has an “accurate kick” whilst others believe it is his weakness. Personally I’d like to see his foot skills improve but Nelson makes up for that lack of polish by making good decisions and putting the football in dangerous areas.

There has been the odd rumbling about Shane Nelson being a chance to go in the top 10 of the AFL Draft, I think that’s a little high and have him going between pick 15-30 at this stage.

St Kilda selection #44

AIDAN CORR
DOB: 17/05/94
Height: 195cm
Weight: 86kg
Club: Northern Knights/Vic Metro

Really tough pick this one, had our eyes on 2 players, can only take the one and we opted for the defender in Corr as we have already secured Hickey, Lee and McBean who I believe will all play as tall forwards with Hickey and McBean having stints in the ruck.

Kevin Sheehan says: “Tall defender who is extremely competitive by nature and spoils aggressively. Has good speed and agility for a tall and uses the ball well by foot to advantage. Takes a strong mark and can go forward to good effect. Injured just prior to Round 4 and 5 of the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships and missed the final two matches. AIS-AFL Academy member.”

At the combine, Corr was rated in the top 6% for the 20m Sprint Teast with 2.89secs and ranked equal 7th in the Buckley Kicking Test (27/30).

His closing speed and team oriented work give him the tools to close down on the oppositions most athletic tall forward.

Pick #45 Sydney

Name: Andrew Boston
Position: Midfielder
DOB: 23/3/94
Height: 180cm
Weight: 75kg

The Swans are going for the best available mid with their next pick and have selected Andrew Boston, an 18 year old midfielder from Broadbeach.  We are stoked that he fell though to us at pick 45 because we rated him in the top 30.  He is an outside mid who can also get his own contested ball and can push forward with great effect (he was the first player in the draft to kick a perfect score in the goal kicking test).  He is a polished player who uses the ball well on either foot and was a standout performer in this year's NAB Championships, averaging 18 disposals on his way to MVP and All Australian honours.  Two of his games in the Championship indicate his potential:

Game 3: 28 disposals (23 kicks), 11 contested possessions and 5 clearances.
Game 5: 23 disposals (17 kicks), 10 contested possessions, 74% efficiency, 3 clearances and a goal.

Boston’s come off a big year in the NEAFL, announcing himself as the best talent to come out of Queensland this season and was given the Rising Star award on the back of consistent performances where he managed bags of four, five and six goals in his first eight senior games.

Kevin Sheehan says: “Medium midfielder who excelled in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships for QLD, averaging 18.2 disposals at 70% and winning All Australian honours. Clean hands and neat disposal skills are features of his game.”
