Interested to hear people's thoughts on whether we'd like him at the club in 2016. Personally I think he's a jet and I'd love him at RFC next year. He clearly needs to find a new club, he's a risk, but worth it IMO. The next question is what would we have to give up?
-
A shed load or common sense
-
Choco Williams could sort him out IMHO.
-
Choco Williams could sort him out IMHO.
My thinking exactly. I think we have the right people around to get the best out of him. Like I said, too talented not to consider!
-
Contracted for another 2 years so would still come at a decent cost as well as the baggage. A cost I'm not sure we will have if we land our other targets.
-
I like idiots that get arrested. Let's get him.

Certainly brings their value down, #bargain :thumbsup

Must get!

Wait to see if they delist him first, sounded like nothing, journos will report on anything. They are some FS bouncers out there, Good on ya Harley for taking a stance against smoking!!
Would like him in the mix

He isnt going to be delisted, he has 2 years remaining on a contract
He will be traded
Sounds like nothing? but for this "nothing" he is going to face court over it ::)
-
Big no
-
No thanks
-
Would be a better risk than Yarran. I'm for it!!! Forget Yarran and get this guy My son used to play juniors with his brother, potential to the shizenhousen but at the end of the day, went in another direction. I also know his cousin very well.
-
Big yes
-
Have we got a house to spare? All the talent but obviously a major fuq wit
-
Nope
-
He didn't do anything wrong.
Australia Nazi Party in Queensland locked him up because he's black and was a bit tipsy.
-
As always, it depends on the cost but I would definitely have a look at him.

They were but it doesn't matter they have this bloke called Rioli. Apparently he's a gun, so its all ok.
On the other hand we had this bloke called Tambling, a bloke whose staple diet consisted of 5 pound Man vs Food type megaburgers called Relton and a bloke looking for a free house.

get himmmmmmmmmm
The kid is a gun yeah he had a bad year with all the crap but choco has turned martin around he would do the same to bennell why wouldn't we look at him I reckon when he is on he is better then treloar and will come cheap as GC want him out offer them a forward mcbean or astbury as Dixon is gone... don't let him go to a hawthorn and make them stronger... Get him done tigers we took a risk with cousins at a older age take a risk with a star of the future he has another 8 years in him...
GO U TIGERS :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

can you imagine hawthorn or freo with this guy?
:(

can you imagine hawthorn or freo with this guy?
:(
Can you imagine us?
I'm bummed about missing Treloar- Harley would go a long way to resolving that. Arguably the more dynamic player.
It's hard not to get pessimistic about it all, you just feel that one of these elite players would turn us into a top four team. We just can't seem to get it done.
If we landed Yarran and Bennell this off season- has there ever been a greater risk vs reward split?

Yarran and Bennell (or one of them, and danger)
plus kreuzer or dixon and wed dead set win the league
:banghead
-
I don't get the "1 player will turn us into a top 4 side" or "we'll win a premiership with this guy"
It just doesnt work like that at all. Sydney got Franklin and lost the premiership. And they didnt get there because of him because they got there the year before without him.
Carlton got Judd and they turned out great..
Any other big player moves that have granted a team a premiership lately ?
It's all about the TEAM. Working as a team is how you win premierships. Sure Treloar would be a handy addition to our midfield.. but I dont see the fuss.
We have Cotchin, Martin, Edwards, Deledio, Miles all proven to be great players. We have Cory Ellis to develop who looks promising.. Lambert is looking very promising with his clearances and goal kicking abilities. We have Nick Vlastuin pushing to become part of the midfield in the next few years. Not to mention Mcintosh and B. Ellis developing very nicely too. Why not spend the money for Treloar on our actual NEEDS.. like another Ruckman.. or CHB or Lightening quick outside runner or goal kicking small forward.
I hope we do the same as last year and draft a shed load of players. I would't mind getting yarran for a 2nd rounder.
TBH I'm not even sure where Bennell would fit into our side. I'd rather develop Lennon than take a player who is known to cause trouble.
Just my take on things.

I think the disquiet arises from the clubs talk of a war chest etc... Its been mentioned a couple of times this year that we have room for a good player- by the club. You can't help but get excited when a good player is linked to us.
On the whole I agree with you though. To win flags you need to develop your core players & then get people for less cash than they are worth- on the idea of winning flags.
I really like Lambert this year, but if you swapped him with Harley (fit, healthy & switched on) we are top four. You win flags from there.
-
I don't get the "1 player will turn us into a top 4 side" or "we'll win a premiership with this guy"
not as a general rule, but if you understand our situation, two or so A-Graders could be the difference between a few flags or nothing for us
granted a melbourne wouldn't be the same
It just doesnt work like that at all.
very good players pretty much always help
Sydney got Franklin and lost the premiership. And they didnt get there because of him because they got there the year before without him.
Carlton got Judd and they turned out great..
if tippett and franklin remain fit - itd take a brave man to argue they dont have at least a decent shot at it over the next 4-5 years. Franklin has helped them get top four
carlton were a goodish side with ratten and judd. just cause they have stuffed it up doesnt mean judd wasnt a major boost. like say, dangerfield would be for us. If they didnt not get rid of Fev anything could of happened
I don't get the "1 player will turn us into a top 4 side" or "we'll win a premiership with this guy"

imo pretty hard to argue with that
if you swap trelor with grigg we are a significant better team
-
not exactly.
the difference between the top teams and those those below them is not their top graders but their bottom half a dozen or so.
a simple swap as such still leaves you with the same bottom 6
-
We have a list capable of beating the best teams in the Comp consistently as proven this year. Our problems are between the ears, whether we decide to show up or not.
-
not exactly.

Our bottom 6 are crap compared to most other clubs too. That is our problem.

and you know what? the more of the salary cap you spend on your top line players, the less you spend on these players, which generally equates to lesser quality.
-
More susceptible to mental frailness, wouldn't be risking any more than a 1 year contract with conditions..and bargain price.
All the talent in the world but?

wrong
adding another top liner
pushes everyone down a place
meaning getting bennell, would make our bottom six stronger
-
:lol
1 in, 1 out no one gets pushed down the line.
+ 1, no one out everyone lower gets pushed down the line 1 spot .
bennel wasnt part of your original equation.
any chance you dont dance around like a cat on a hot tin roof?
-

:huh
if you add bennell to the list
then hes a top 5-10 player
hence a 'bottom 6' player is removed
to fit bennell in, making the bottom six stronger
-
can you please provide your decipher code so we can see how this has a mention of bennell?
if you swap trelor with grigg we are a significant better team
:huh :huh :huh :huh :huh :huh :huh
1 in 1 out. simple for most of us.
if you want bennell in that equation then you need to say so. maybe in the george bush world of fairies and magic mushies it may not be needed, but in reality we can only go on what is actually said
-

bennel
dangerfield
trelor
same
look at thread title
any gun, would make our bottom six stronger , via taking out one lesser player
-
lmao its like discussing things with a computerised ardvard with a burnt out cpu

I don't know why you encourage it. I only scroll past it and it still does my head in.

not exactly.

to bring in an A Grade player, removes one the bottom six from the 22, hence improving the bottom six
this is very simple stuff Penelope
-
not when you are taking out a middle tier player.
1 in, 1 out = bottom 6 stays the same.
id have thought that was simple, but obviously not
-
realistically, dangerfield, bennell, trelor would be a deal done for picks
-
:lol
if you swap trelor with grigg we are a significant better team

:lol

its true 8)
imo grigg is not in best 16, or 22 8)
i just said that, cause the other guy spoke of the option of replacing lambert
-
big yes from me, massive talent
-
I think we have a strong enough culture at the club to harness wild stallions like Bennell now. In the past I would have said no way, but I think he could be massive for us now. Add the fact he'll be hellbent on showing GC they made a poor decision. Give him a job a the KGI teaching the indigenous youth what paths not to go down and make him Choco's project for the summer!!! :pray :pray :pray :pray :gotigers :gotigers :gotigers

Bennell is one of them

Agree!
Give them 2nd Round and Astbury, Gordon!
Why give 1st round if they sacked him?
-
First round worth the punt. Massive upside. Get it done.
Went on the straight an narrow after moving in with folaeu in 2012. Runner up baf at the suns. Track record of pulling his head in when career is on the line. Not a lost cause.
Also just looking at his stats averaged very well for defensive fwd pressure acts including tackles. Needed at Richmond

Would take the risk. He is very talented. Gold Coast are in the position they have to get rid of him so may be able to draft down the asking price.

2nd Rounder and a trade down of picks, maybe our 2nd rounder for the next two years to do the trick?

If we had the choice between Yarran and Bennell, I'd take Bennell. I know that's not the most ground breaking call, but hey, that's what tiger talk threads are for arn't they?
-
I really don't know if the club can keep both Martin and Bennell straight. But if we're talking pure talent then yes get him in the team. Corey Ellis comes in for Newman, and you could get this guy in to replace Taylor Hunt and all of a sudden RFC look like a really solid outfit
-
Give him a bag of goey. :thumbsup
-
Aish & Bennell would be a fine off summer for us trade wise if we could do it.
-
And a trade to send Conca back to WA for a ruck like Lycett would be unbelievably terrific for us.
-
Gold Coast's Harley Bennell has been linked with an long list of clubs with Hawthorn being apparent front runners according to Damien Barrett.

Give it up he won't be coming to our club much like Aish won't be.
Delete thread focus on yarran the gun and the quiet bloke Kruzer
-
We should have confidence enough in the club to set him straight. Is a dead set gun and if we are serious about improving our side we should be targeting him.
I'll be peeed off if someone from the RFC comes out saying "He isn't a good fit for our side." or something similar. :banghead
-
true and trengrove, winderlich were going to be good fits hahaha I think there was one game between them this year gee whizz how lucky are we...
Bennell is a jet play on ball up forward will enable chop outs to martin dids that's what we want if we could leave did and martin up forward gee whizz that's a dangerouse forward line :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

I am not that enthused about getting him myself but I have heard that we do have an interest. If it was up to me, the only players we'd still be chasing would be Treloar and Id be trying to get Lycett out of West Coast to takeover as our main ruck. I am not enthused about players like Yarran and Bennell myself.

Agree with trying to get him.

what does Bennell offer that we need?

what does Bennell offer that we need?
Skill.
The ability to hit a target under pressure.
Speed.
Goal kicking midfielder.
Can't have enough of those qualities in a team that needs to win finals.........

Well, he's gay, so he should "slot right in"

His average disposals is marginally under 22. Not sure of efficiency though.

Bring on Bennell! Pace, skills, goal sense ... the list goes on ... ;D

Is he? And if he is, so what? I'm hetero but really don't care about anyones sexual preference. FFS as long as he can help our club win a flag, I don't care if he not only believes in the tooth fairy but wants to date them!!!!
-
Changed my mind on this, yes from me got all the talent.
I just wanna win, if issues arise so be it but must be tried!

Gay poos a bit old guys. This will be our problem, every player wants to head home these days and no doubt they will end up there.....we will be lucky to pick up anyone this trade/fa period. If we get Yarran and Stevie J it will reek of 95 and we will soon be heading back down the ladder.

Tigers to weigh up Harley Bennell, Dees and Roos won't
Jake Niall
The Age

Richmond will investigate whether the discarded Gold Coast midfielder Harley Bennell is worth pursuing, but Melbourne has ruled out pursuing the strife-prone young star.
The Tigers confirmed to Fairfax Media that they would complete "due diligence" on Bennell, and are one of several clubs that will undertake the step of researching Bennell.
The Tigers have stressed, however, that they are merely doing their homework on Bennell and that does not necessarily mean they will be seeking to acquire him.
North Melbourne has all but ruled out pursuing Bennell, who is on the trading block after a number of off-field indiscretions. The highly talented and skilful midfielder/forward has two years to run on a contract that is set to pay him in excess of $400,000 over the next two years.
Melbourne coach Paul Roos categorically ruled out the Demons as a candidate for recruiting Bennell. Roos said Bennell did not fit with "where we are at the moment as a club," adding, "we just wouldn't pursue him through list management."
The Suns say there are a number of clubs who will put their toe in the water by completing due diligence on Bennell, who was sacked by the club after being given a public nuisance notice at a Gold Coast nightclub. This was the culmination of a troublesome season, in which he mixed brilliance with drama outside the playing field.
Bennell was stood down by the club in July and received help after photographs were published of him allegedly using illicit drugs. The Suns then hoped to work with him and retain him – he is universally regarded as an elite A grade talent – but the end of season incident confirmed his exodus, with the club deciding to put him on the block.
Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley, too, has ruled out a pursuit of Bennell, whose manager Colin Young has been in contact with clubs and fielding interest. The Suns say five to six clubs have made inquiries about him, and it is unclear what price will be required in a trade – the draft or player return will hinge, like all exchanges, on the level of interest.
Bennell, originally from Western Australia, was drafted at pick No 2 in the 2010 draft and will be just 23 next month, with excellent pace and skills. He has shown himself capable of match-winning performances, with a number of high possession and impact efforts. He also has a capacity to kick goals when playing forward.

Richmond great Matthew Richardson has flagged Harley Bennell, Chris Yarran and Jack Redden as possible recruiting targets for his former club this summer.
The Tigers are reeling after their third consecutive elimination final loss, with plenty of discussion already erupting about what the club can do to get over that hurdle next year.
Richardson said Bennell was undoubtedly a risk, given his off-field troubles, but maybe one worth taking.
"I would definitely look at him," Richardson said on Sports Today.
"I think it's undoubtedly a risk if someone's got a history of not being able to toe the line over a number of years… but maybe if he knows it's his last chance?
"The change of club and being basically sacked from your club… surely a light bulb has got to go off?"
Gerard Healy backed Richmond assistant Mark Williams to pull the troubled Gold Coast young gun into line.
"The more I think about it, the more I think it's a match made in heaven," the Sports Today host said.
"Choco Williams is the man for Harley Bennell."

look into tigers deeply no second guessing he will be 23 years old if we can turn him around would be the buy of the season I even think he would be better then treloar sum may doubt that but bennell kicks goals and creates that run we so badly need, 400k instead of treloar 800 which would free us up for another highly regarded player who that one is we will not no all hype.... :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

I agree. The downside is we waste $400K on a player who is constantly getting into trouble and unable to get on the field and is a total nutcase. He may even influence some of the young players and disrupt the team. It really is a "rolling the dice" scenario. It's either a huge win or a huge loss.

It'd rather risk it on a potential top 10 player

Who's brave enough to play Bennell Powerball?
Damian Barrett
AFL.com.au
September 17, 2015
THERE is a very big deal to be made here.
It is available to the club most prepared to leap into the fearful, ugly unknown. It entails massive risk, will almost certainly cause problems. Your supporters will question you, maybe forever.
The potential fallout? Total embarrassment for everyone associated with it.
Potential reward? Like finding the numbers in Powerball. In a jackpot week.
The deal’s name is Harley Bennell, he of Gold Coast Football Club infamy.
In Bennell’s football life, there has been alcohol, drugs, generally poor behaviour and a whole lot of questionable commitment.
But, there has also been breathtaking, elite football.
Do the form yourself, but recent examples include the 39 disposals he managed in his return to football against Adelaide in round 17 this year after a club-imposed three-week ban, the brilliant match-winning performance in round seven last year against North Melbourne, after he had missed the opening six rounds with a serious calf injury, and the six goals versus Geelong last year in round 14.
AFL clubs are so conservative when it comes to recruiting bad boys. In American sports, where ownership of teams is corporate and there are no such things as two-year plans let alone five-year plans, only the pursuit of instant wins, bad boys are all the rage, provided they can play their chosen sport at the highest output.
If Bennell was an NFL player, there would be 31 clubs chasing him hard right now.
But he’s an AFL player, which means not every club outside the one with which he is listed wants him.
This is not to trivialise his past problems, for clearly he has issues which are not conducive to optimum sports output.
But a smart club, right now, would devise an arrangement which is no-lose for it.
Bennell’s talents as a footballer are so elite that he alone is capable of taking a losing preliminary finalist in one year to a Grand Final the next year, a losing semi-finalist to a prelim final and maybe a Grand Final, a losing elimination finalist (hello Richmond!) to quite possibly a Grand Finalist.
He is that good. He is the cream on the cake.
Yes, he is not the answer for every team. In fact, we would recommend that teams which feel they will not compete for a top eight finish in the next two years go nowhere near this man.
If he is the best player on your list with the responsibility that comes with that, look out. He certainly hasn’t handled being the second most gifted player on the Gold Coast list.
The deal to which we refer also applies to the Suns.
Naturally, expectedly, justifiably, they will try to get maximum return for him in the transaction they opt for in relieving their books and playing list of his salary and problems.
Naturally, expectedly, justifiably, the Suns will want to send him to a poorly performed club so that Bennell doesn’t be seen to hurt them for his loss, and also because those poorly performed clubs will have access to better draft picks for such an exchange.
All 17 clubs outside of the Suns would not think twice about having Bennell on their list if the issue was purely football talent.
Which leaves the better credentialed clubs in the box seat for his talents. They have the reason to recruit him, and the challenge to make it work for them.
Rather than consigning Bennell to the too-difficult category, they should be devising offers which are heavily based on performance as an individual, and by extension as a team, and therefore placing the onus on Bennell himself to make it work financially.
Make the first year of the contract purely performance based (as in, no really big money unless he plays at least 16 games), add another clause that instant dismissal will come on the back of an even minor off-field incident at any stage of the contract, and then add some seriously lucrative financial incentives for a premiership, and woo-la, it’s a no-lose situation for a prospective club.
In 2015, AFL clubs have become ridiculously scared of, and beholden to, the thoughts of their members and supporters.
But as per our devised deal potential, selling the potential recruit of Bennell to members and supporters would be a no-lose scenario too.
If you are a middle-aged coach or middle-aged official of a club which likes Bennell’s on-field game but not his off-field game, you should not automatically rule him out.
His problems are alcohol based, not drugs based.
Had it not been for News Limited recently deciding to pay money for, and then publish, photos of him doing drugs when he was a 20-year-old - after multiple other media outlets chose not to pay for the same photos simply because the photos were of a then-impressionable 20-year-old doing something he shouldn’t have been doing - then the perception of Bennell would not be so stark.
And before you think we are taking a lenient view of drug use, we are not. Check our regularly expressed views on drugs and particularly the too-lenient AFL drugs policy. But there is not one parent, who at some stage, hasn’t asked him or herself if they really know if their late-teen or early-20s son or daughter has done drugs.
Bennell has. And so have hundreds of thousands of other Australians his age. So what. And again, this is not making light of his off-field issues. Bennell's drugs issues have always come on the back of alcohol consumption. Get him into the right AFL club environment, and that will sort itself out.
Bennell can play football like very few in this country.
There’s a fit somewhere - the troubled soon-to-be-23-year-old with a team in the premiership window.
There is a deal there. The smart club will make it. And we predict that club will look back on that deal and think it got it cheap.

pretty sure whereevr he ends up there will be behavioural clauses in his contract, and probably regular drug testing.
The club believes they are close to contending. If so the club as a whole should be mature enough and have enough leaders to, at the very least stop someone like bennell from leading others astray, but hopefully get him into line.
the kid is immensly talented and the rewards are high. he will come cheap and the contract will be easily torn up if he stuffs up, so the risk is relatively low.
coming from a low base the club hasnt really been in a position to take too many recruiting risks over the last 5 years, but it is now time to roll the dice

Harley Bennell, Mark Williams would be a match made in heaven at Richmond, says Gerard Healy
FoxSports
September 17, 2015
BROWNLOW Medallist Gerard Healy believes Mark Williams and Harley Bennell would be “a match made in heaven”, claiming the Richmond development coach would be the ideal mentor for the troubled ex-Sun should he be traded to the Tigers.
The Tigers have been one of a handful of clubs to show interest in the forward-midfielder, who was discarded by Gold Coast after a string of off-field indiscretions during his five-year stint.
Bennell was put up for trade last week, despite still having two years to run on his contract at the Suns.
If Bennell was traded to the Tigers, Williams would likely play a similar mentoring role to the one when he counselled Dustin Martin three years ago.
Williams took Martin under his wing following a disappointing 2012 season in which he was suspended by the Tigers for two matches for missing a compulsory training session. The Williams family hosted Martin for weekly dinners, with the development coach working intensely with the star midfielder about how to structure his life off the field.
Healy said that style of nurturing from Williams would be of great benefit for Bennell.
“He would be one that ‘Choco’ Williams, who I think should be talking to Essendon, but if he’s not and staying at the Tigers, ‘Choco’ Williams is the man for Harley Bennell,” Healy told 3AW.
“The more I think about it, the more I think it’s a match made in heaven.”
Tigers Rising Star nominee Ben Lennon recently told Fox Footy how Williams had played an instrumental role in his development during the early stages of his AFL career.
“Any development kid down there he’ll look after,” Lennon said.
“We get along really well, me and Mark. He’s taught me a lot and I’ve got a lot to thank him for. He’s always there on a Monday morning to go through vision.
“He’s pretty cheeky, Choco. He’ll always say what he thinks. He’s got some pretty good banter, so the boys get along with him pretty well down at the club.”
Tigers champion Matthew Richardson said picking up Bennell would “undoubtedly be a risk”, but was confident the former Gold Coast speedster would click under Williams’ guidance at the Tigers.
“We know that Choco has done a great job with Dustin Martin. Dusty, as a young guy, probably did enjoy getting out socially a little bit,” he said.
“Dusty’s been a consistent player now the last two years, so I’m sure Choco would thrive working with him.’’
If Bennell did land at the Tigers and was in a healthy state of mind, Richardson said he could make an immediate impact at Punt Road.
“I would definitely look at him playing off half-forward, going into the midfield. You know he’s got pace, you know he can kick goals. You’d have to look at him,” Richardson said.

Bennell, Tigers a ‘perfect fit’
TRIPLE premiership star Chris Johnson says sacked Gold Coast speedster Harley Bennell could be the missing link for Richmond. The Tigers are one of several clubs eyeing off Bennell, and the Suns say he will go to the highest bidder.

HARLEY Bennell’s lap of the show ring has begun with Fremantle and Richmond the first to meet with him while two other clubs have made inquiries about the troubled former Sun.
... the Suns believe the Dockers and Tigers have already met with Bennell.
The Kangaroos and Geelong have also made inquiries.
Despite Hawthorn’s attempts to distance themselves from any links with Bennell, the Suns believe they are still interested.

THEN ... he'll be playing in his home state next year, for Freo. If those who have what they know to be his best interests at heart, then he'll be based in Victoria. Watch Richmond in this space.

Things are different now. We were so low we could build ourselves up by playing it safe and going after players you knew what you were going to get from (whether it be a lot or a little). Now that we are in the middle bracket it is now time to take more risks

Yeah that same stable of stars that are yet to make top 4 or even win a final. How long has Blair been there now??? Whats that i hear, seven years!!!!. So far Blair has reigned over nothing more than mediocrity and on field very little has been achieved. Maybe just maybe Blair is signing players he shouldn't and for too long.
You know like the coach and the players, club personell in certain roles, the roles Hartley 7 yrs and Jackson 10 yrs, are in. Well their performance can be measured by success. After all success depends upon them. Yet after all that time we still can,t win a final even against a 9th placed side or make the top 8. How long do you want us to wait.
In many ways we are no closer to a premiership today than we were in the 2012 season despite top 8 finishes.

I have a feeling Bennell will be in the news in 2016 for all the wrong reasons .
Matthew Lloyd said on the Sunday football show a few weeks back that Bennell was " sent home " from an underage tour of Ireland for disciplinary reasons. Now he has been sacked by the Suns for disciplinary reasons.
Is he a slow learner ? Or does he carry the same d$&khead gene as Nick Kyrgios ?

Harley Bennell trade, Fremantle and North Melbourne eye troubled Gold Coast Suns midfielder
TIM MARTAIN
Herald-Sun
September 26, 2015
GOLD Coast expect the race for Harley Bennell to heat up even further after this weekend, with at least two preliminary finals teams in the hunt for the talented but troubled Suns midfielder.
Fremantle and North Melbourne are two of the four clubs keen to trade for Bennell, with Richmond and Essendon the other two suitors.
Hawthorn have been linked to Bennell but it is understood the Hawks do not have the salary cap space to accommodate the on-baller who was shown the door by the Suns for repeated off-field indiscretions.
With four clubs in the hunt for Bennell, the Suns have got themselves an auction and are confident of getting a good return for the No. 2 draft pick despite his behavioural issues.

Always on the cards, but will they be able to satisfy GCS with a trade?
Who knows.
They need a forward, McCarthy is who they want, yes GWS won't be releasing him but I wouldn't bet on that.

We should have traded those delisted players for Bennell. l'm sure Arnot would fit into the Suns side

According to 3AW, Bennell hasn't been in contact with anyone for 10 days and that includes the Suns, Tiges or Freo, and we (and Freo) might be already running out of patience with him.

Bennell ended up with the most Brownlow votes for the Suns. Mark Stevens reiterated that North are keen on getting him. No mention of us.

Q. Bennell and Tigers? Any chance?
Jay Clark: Not ruling it out but Freo in box seat because he wants to stay in WA.

That's what we've heard. Family members wanting him to stay away from bad off-field influences in WA.

Where's Bennell landing?
Jay Clark: Nicko, Freo in box seat. Not sure he has been interviewed by any melb clubs yet. Hard for them to get him if that is the case.

Mark Robinson on AFL360 said Richmond is going very hard at Bennell and there's an 80% chance of him ending up at Tigerland.

Well let's hop that's true.

West Coast’s pursuit of Jetta has left them unlikely to make a bid for Gold Coast midfielder Harley Bennell, who is due to meet Fremantle this week.

NEXT to Richardson was Richmond coach Damien Hardwick, who said the club was on the hunt for a player of Harley Bennell’s quality, but didn’t specifically say the club was chasing the former Gold Coast Sun.
“We’re probably like every other club, we’re just trying to improve our list. We’ll go through and see what we get, obviously we need to improve,” Hardwick said.
“We’re looking at a number of players.”
After Hardwick’s interview, co-host Robinson said he was “80 per cent” sure Bennell was heading to Richmond during the trade period, but that North Melbourne was also in the race.

Dockers not ruling out bid for Gold Coast's Harley Bennell
Mitch Cleary
afl.com.au
September 30, 2015
FREMANTLE coach Ross Lyon has refused to hose down the Dockers' growing interest in troubled Gold Coast player Harley Bennell.
It is understood the Dockers continue to sound out Bennell and his history as it looks to break its premiership duck in Ross Lyon's fifth season in 2016.
After being pushed out from the Suns for a string of off-field issues, Lyon feels Bennell’s family connection in Western Australia is an advantage to luring him home.
"Clearly Harley wants to come home, there's two clubs in Perth and he's got a really strong connection with a lot of our players," Lyon told Channel Nine.
"But in saying that, everyone's exploring all options.
"He's obviously a very talented young man.
"His family's in WA down in Mandurah and he's close to his family. That all points well for a WA club to maybe embrace Harley and give an opportunity to grow.
"We’re open to improving our list but they're list management decisions."

Brett Anderson on SEN just now pretty much said it all comes down to how desperately Bennell wants to return to WA. He believes like Garlett (who had issues before returning and has now ended up in jail), it may not be in Bennell's best interests to return to Perth despite some family links there. Going to Melbourne and being under Choco Williams' tutelage at Richmond would be a great fit after Choco's work with Dusty. Richmond have shown interest in Bennell.

Troubled Sun Bennell has secret meeting with Tigers officials, as well as Dusty
Mitch Cleary
afl.com.au
September 30, 2015 6:39 PM
TROUBLED Gold Coast midfielder Harley Bennell met with key Richmond personnel at Punt Road on Wednesday as he searches for a new home in 2016.
Bennell was driven in via a rear entrance by development boss Mark Williams, flanked by the player Williams helped mentor, Dustin Martin.
The three spent two hours inside Tigers headquarters and met with coach Damien Hardwick and chief executive Brendon Gale.
Captain Trent Cotchin was also present, along with fellow leadership group member Ivan Maric
"It was a family meeting, I can't say too much," Maric told Channel Nine when departing.
Tigers football boss Dan Richardson said the meeting was about learning more of Bennell's intentions for his football future.
"We've got some interest in Harley, we'll see where it goes after the meeting today," he told Channel Nine.
"(The meeting is) just getting an insight into what his journey's been, where he's at and where he wants to go with his football.
"The key discussion is (about) the right environment to bring out his best is."
Williams took Martin under his wing when his career was at a flashpoint several years ago and Richardson said the former Port Adelaide coach would play a key role in any future Bennell had at the Tigers
"Chocco's part of the support and development program we have in place, there's a lot of other people involved in that. We'll see where that goes and see what's important to Harley," he said.
Richardson also acknowledged Bennell's outside run and ability to kick goals as a key factor in the club's pursuit.

Apparently it is very solid without being over the top. Exactly what it should be for someone on possibly 2 strikes.

We'll have to trade for him. Thoughts? Id have said our first rounder should be enough but with other players in the market might need something more.

GC have said they will trade him, if he nominates us then our 1st round pick will definitely get it done I would have thought.
Would be a massive coup for the club if we can attract someone like Bennell.

youd think a 1st rounder or a 2nd rounder I guess we will compete with freo we are better placed there but im thinking they maybe better placed with the $$$$ all in all we must go out and get him sure he has had issues dane swan has issues I think if he is playing footy then hell be fine.... we have no players to offer really mcbean , astbury probably the best

Richmond, Fremantle to battle for Harley Bennell’s services
ANNE MATHER
Herald-Sun
October 1, 2015
HARLEY Bennell has begun talking with clubs about a new home next year as Richmond and Fremantle ramp up their battle for his services.
The talented Gold Coast midfielder caught up with Richmond midfielder Dustin Martin and Tigers officials yesterday for the first time.
Tigers assistant Mark ‘Choco’ Williams will be a key aspect of Richmond’s attraction for Bennell given his critical role helping Martin mature into a regular match-winner.
Bennell is also expected to meet with up Fremantle officials and coach Ross Lyon before the weekend, with the Dockers contingent in town until Sunday.
Ex-Sun Bennell has categorically denied reports he played any part in a fight during a local game in West Australia last week, with video footage showing him sitting uninvolved in the grandstand.
Lyon said at Wednesday’s Coaches Awards he was keen to see if Bennell wanted to play at Fremantle.
“Clearly Harley wants to come home, there’s two clubs in Perth and he’s got a really strong connection with a lot of our players,” Lyon said.
“But in saying that, everyone’s exploring all options. He’s obviously a very talented young man.
“His family’s in WA down in Mandurah and he’s close to his family. That all points well for a WA club to maybe embrace Harley and give an opportunity to grow.

Dont think they'll actually go too hard for him, but as Lyon said, if he wants to go back to W.A there's only two options. They'd be silly not to put their hands up, but if we get around him and say "we want you!" and he decides hed like to come to us, Id say Freo would back off. Just my thoughts.
-
It will be Freo.
-
It will be Freo.
No it won't be
-
Im concerned as to how hard Freo are allegedly chasing him.
1. If he does come to us it will cost us a lot more. Saying that his family may hold sway in this respect not wanting him home in W.A. and all reports say he is very close to them, hopefully he will listen to them
2. From his perspective I hope it doesnt go to his head being chased so vigorously. The kid already has issues, it could do more harm than good.

freo are also chasing jetta they wont get both so freo leave Harley and take jetta :thumbsup :thumbsup

Chris and Harley will be good for the Indigenous Centre as well.
If for no other reason they will be able to assist a lot of young kids/teenagers who will be better off with some blokes to look up too.
You never know but there might be another piece to the puzzle if things work out. ;) In Blair and Dan we trust.

I have a sneaky feeling you'll be wrong with that last statement too claw!

Harley was at Punt Road again today. No idea about anything else.
Cotch was asked about Bennell on Ch 9 news and he said we have the internals to deal with anyone regardless of their baggage.

So that's twice in two days, let's hope this time was to tell the Tiges he wants in!

Id say we'll know within 24 hours what his call is. This will kick the media in to gear I woulda thought.
-
Yeah that's what I'm thinking too. What ever he went back to the club for today we will know very soon.
-
Don't think there will be any announcement / calls made until after the GF
Nothing until Monday at the earliest IMVHO
-
IF Bennell chooses Freo, that means other than yarran ,we have probably missed out on all our targets so far.
Are we going hard enough after these guys,or are we just more prudent and carefull than most other teams
yep it leaves yah scratching yah head if we don't pull anyone this trade period why wouldn't they want to our club from where we were at 5 years ago to know we are a power house know supporter base and 2-3 good players will get us to were we need to be.. fingers crossed mate
Do you really need to ask that question.Atm it is only Richmond people who rate Richmond and even among us there are a good percentage who dont rate us..Players aren't stupid they can see where clubs are at.

Okay, hold up. I know people love to get stuck into BH and DR, imo a lot of it is totally unwarranted.
Maybe its a rosy coloured "gen y" everyone gets a ribbon view on things, but I'm seeing it more like this.
DR and BH have managed to keep a very talented core bunch of players together for unders during a period of transition in the afl where players have been demanding trades and more cash left right and centre. Regardless of how you see it, we've managed to acquire a "war chest" in order to lure players. The Dusty debacle from '13 was played perfectly by our list management team, and yet we give them no credit for it.
Fact: Trade period hasn't even started and yet we're writing ourselves off already.
Fact: Despite people calling last trade season a fail, we made a call not to trade early picks owing to the strength of the draft. Who went anywhere anyway? Imagine if we got Lamumba instead of C Ellis?!
The only thing that's really upset me so far is AT choosing the wobbles over us. I didn't like BH calling AT personally, it looks desperate, but that's the only significant failing for mine.
We were able to make Richmond appealing to players at the end of 2010 when we were a rabble. Grigg and Houli (much maligned) are still are wins in my book. Guys that have given us great service during our transition. Houli in particular was a great snare, he's a genuine first grade player.
We can't under value our first round picks, look at who we've got in the last 8 years with our first pick, all wins with the exception of Conca.
In finishing, look, I think its important to give the club a whack when necessary, and for people to vent their frustrations and misgivings whilst baracking for this cruel mistress that is the RFC, but when I see some serious bulldust, I'm gunna call people out. Let the trade period play its course and then we can evaluate when all said and done. After all, its not like any of us can actually change any of the upcoming decisions on players etc.

99% certain he will be at Punt Rd next year. The only way the media knew he was there yesterday was because it would have been leaked by the club or his manager. It's called warming up the masses.
Even heard AFL CEO today ask Mick Molloy if he was confident he was coming. Can't see that sort of banter at that level without some strong mail.
-
Site will go into meltdown if it comes out he chooses us

Not half as much as it will if he doesn't.....

I understand that pick 12 will secure Bennell, from GC's perspective.
Whether we try to get something else back to defray the cost, I dunno
.....
I don't have a direct source, no. I'd never divulge that info if I did.
But from someone intimately involved in the industry, and loosely associated with this transaction, I am advised pick 12 will suffice, in GC's eyes.
Certainly not nailing anything to the mast, but I asked someone you'd think might just know - given what he does and who he does it for - who told me that.

From Barrett's latest Sliding Doors article ...
IF .... you recall this week two years ago ...
THEN ... you'll remember Dusty Martin taking a tour of GWS facilities. He facilitated Harley Bennell's tour of Punt Rd this week. Can't work out whether that is a good or bad thing for Harley. We'll go with it being good. For now.

This is what BF has today:
Ok further info on Harley and Richmond.
Richmond met with Harley Wednesday and Thursday. Richmond playing hardball low balling his offer. Harley is staying at Dustys house. Bennell has three other clubs interested he is meeting with Carlton today.
This is all I can share i will know more within the next few days.
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/bh-project-2015-vi-trade-and-free-agency-discussion.1113678/page-43#post-41261732
Club hasn't made Harley an offer yet. Also Yarran has agreed to the deal we've put infront of him.
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/bh-project-2015-vi-trade-and-free-agency-discussion.1113678/page-44#post-41261847
Yes they have trust me mate my source is extremely strong.
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/bh-project-2015-vi-trade-and-free-agency-discussion.1113678/page-44#post-41262040
Lol that's fair enough mate stay positive I still think we'll get him it's all part of negotiating, I was peeed when I got the info aswell. It's like buying a house it's listed for $600000 with 120 day settlement and I offer $500000 with 60 day settlement. There will be back and forth until somebody either says yes or walks away. I still think we can get this done but it can be annoying.
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/bh-project-2015-vi-trade-and-free-agency-discussion.1113678/page-45#post-41262835

He's meeting with Carlton today and north on monday.
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/bh-project-2015-vi-trade-and-free-agency-discussion.1113678/page-47#post-41263500
There has been no formal offer, low ball or different made to Harley and the suggestion we labelled him a B grader is ludicrous, words passed onto me by an ex player who played with B Gale, "Our club wouldnt even label a B Grader a B Grader to their face or management, that is hilarious."
We want Harley, that much is true, we also think we can get him as of 2 days ago, but still plenty more to happen between now and then. Bolded part is my opinion.
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/bh-project-2015-vi-trade-and-free-agency-discussion.1113678/page-48#post-41264313
No offense mate I can guarantee the info I shared earlier is 100% accurate. My source is somebody who was part of the discussion. Believe what you will but he was described as a talent but only b grader who has the ability to be an a grader this includes on and off field.

:cheers all good re Harley no medical today due to all the
Gf crap around the mcg has taken medical
And is happy with Richmond all will depend on
What we can give Gold Coast who r hoping for a first rounder
But it seems for some silly reason we will give that to Carlton
For yarran....
-
Wait - we're risking missing out on Bennell because we want use our first rounder for Yarran?
Surely not even Richmond are that incompetent....
-
no 1st rounder for Yarran!!!!! i say that as in "we won't be"
-
Seems odd we'd lock him in to 3 days straight at the club and do the medical on the PH. So im satisfied there was no missed meeting. Could be on the cards kids!!
-
Talented Gold Coast midfielder Harley Bennell was in Melbourne during the week meeting clubs as he moves closer to making a decision on his preferred destination, with Fremantle still a serious contender for his services.

I think the club can ask the AFL to wipe the slate clean for him. If he's on 2 strikes, no team will take him. The AFL knows this and wants to give him some slack when it comes to rehabilitation. I would think that this is the best for the guy.

Dinner with Dusty: Bennell turns Tiger for the night
Ben Guthrie
afl.com.au
October 2, 2015 10:00 PM
RICHMOND has seemingly stepped up its efforts to recruit Gold Coast midfielder Harley Bennell to the club.
Two days after Bennell met with key Richmond personnel at Punt Road, it was Dustin Martin's turn to wine and dine the talented midfielder on his birthday at dinner on Friday night.
Bennell posted a photo to Instagram of himself and Martin enjoying a drink with the comment 'Great birthday dinner'.
The Tigers have expressed interest in the 23-year-old who was put up for trade by the Suns after a series of off-field incidents this year.
Martin was part of an entourage that met with Bennell at the club's headquarters on Wednesday that included coach Damien Hardwick, assistant Mark Williams, chief executive Brendon Gale, captain Trent Cotchin and ruckman Ivan Maric.
Tigers football boss Dan Richardson said Wednesday's meeting was about learning more of Bennell's intentions for his football future.
"We've got some interest in Harley, we'll see where it goes after the meeting today," he told Channel Nine.
"(The meeting is) just getting an insight into what his journey's been, where he's at and where he wants to go with his football.
"The key discussion is (about) the right environment to bring out his best."

Bennell keen to join tigers.
Playing group super confident. Club completely onboard. Salary? Tigers will honour GCS contract (about 500,000k next year)
B grader stuff is absolute rubbish. Like I said earlier today.
Still meeting with a few more clubs though. So he hasn't signed yet. But we've left a great 3 day impression, don't know if North/Carl/Frem do much in a standard 2 hour meeting that we haven't accomplished in three days.
There's more to it of course (harley needs to cross a few t's and dot a few i's along the way), but the club is willing to pay him ...

I have a feeling the millisecond that he decides on a club of preference it will go viral.

Oh yeah and then the wheeling an dealing begins, I just hope if he nominates us then we give up round 1 pick and its done. Then we give up round 2 for Yarran and spend the rest of the trade period trying to get a couple more.

Geez not holding out much hope of HB in tiger colours.

1st and 2nd rounder for Bennell and Yarran, Ashbury for Redden and exchange of picks somewhere along the lines. Carlisle for our 1st rounder next year. Conca to wce for Lycett. Do that and I'll buy family inner sanctum membership for the next 5 years min.

loads of blokes? a few at RFC? you state this like a jackstar fact :banghead, so you know this for for sure or just an assumption?
IF thye bloke is a coke head, that is someone that has trouble staying off the gear, and IF he was already on two strikes (remember this is not publisised) then the risk of a two year ban is quite high, so yeah seriously I wouldnt be giving up a top 20 pick IF this was the case.
As for franklin, well how is he travelling at the moment? Good example that :whistle

You think every player in the AFL is clean? You think every player on the RFC list is clean? That's a more ridiculous assumption than my own.
And what's wrong with my Franklin example? I didn't say anything about him being a worthwhile investment - just that clubs like Hawthorn (any more) want the best football out of a player as a priority - the cliches about how a player's health 'comes first' is just there to appease the sheep. If a bloke kicks hundreds of goals or wins a Brownlow whilst snorting coke or doing something else stupid then a club would be more inclined to let it slide. If it's a fringe player they'll be hung out to dry. Look at Hodge's recent drink-driving incident as an example. Do you think they would let that fly with a C-grade player?
As for Franklin it's quite well known that he had a troubled personal life, including - hence the nickname 'Buddy' because somebody would always accompany him to his nights out as a 'buddy' to keep an eye on him.
-
I assume AFL is a reflection of the broader community. The fads and trends in the community would also be present in the AFL.I don't know how prevalent drug tacking is amongst our youth,i can only go on what i hear and see in the media/social media.Having said that should we assume that the RFC has also these issues to deal with?Or is the support network far better mongst the AFL and clubs that this issue might not have the prominence it does in the broader community

fair dinkim i never get over this george bush type of stupidity.
what wrong with the frankiln example? LMAO
as i asked how is that working out currently?
-
So let me get this right,
We need two Aboriginal players to justify our dreamtime wins and promote the indigenous centre?
Political Priorities, RFC -POLITICAL PRIORITIES!!!
-
Do you think the RFC recruit indigenous players over non indigenous players just to keep dreamtime game and the institute? Did they ever announce this as policy?
Having said that, i bet they used it as a recruiting tool.
-
Come on Ox , your better than that .
-
Was making a point.....about how it seems a politically driven campaign to get them to RFC.
There's actually nothing wrong with the. Word, abbo.
You've all been brainwashed, same way they brainwashed us to think that we didn't
Rape and pillage our way to a new country.
Lol @ the inconsistencies of PC

Ive been dubbed 'PC' but most posters here, but I agree with most of that. We absolutely raped and pillaged, then blamed indigenous people for not being wealthy high achievers.
Use of the word 'Abo' is derogatory. Dont care what your rationalisation is, its right off.

Bennell had a tour of Richmond’s Punt Road headquarters this week, but the Tigers are believed to be well behind Fremantle in the hunt for the 23-year-old.
https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/29708742/crowley-will-have-to-wait/
Damian Barrett on MMM earlier said that Bennells preference is to go to Fremantle but his family and manager are still pushing for him to go to a Melbourne-based club. Richmond would be the front runner of the Melbourne-based clubs.
Rance on Ch 7 earlier said we would be a good club for Bennell. Mick Molloy then chipped in, showed the clip of Rance slip & sliding in the rooms, and said this is what Bennell has to look forward to at Richmond lol.
-
"Are believed to be" well behind? What does that mean? Have they got quotes form the player involved? If so, then print them. If not, then I think that journalist is speaking through his :biglaugh

Dockers want Bennell, but Tigers leading race
A photo of sacked Gold Coast midfielder Harley Bennell breaking bread with Richmond’s Dustin Martin will have Tiger supporters smiling wide.
It will likely take a first-round pick to get the talented youngster and it seems the Tigers are putting in the groundwork early.
“Fremantle has had a chat to him over the last couple of days, but then he went out and had a feed with Dustin Martin to celebrate his 23rd birthday,” said Ralph.
“It’s a bit of a funny one, because they want to say come along and play with your mate but it’s not exactly, ‘come and be like Dusty Martin’.
“The Dockers are keen but I think their eggs are in the McCarthy basket.”
http://www.sen.com.au/news/10-15/trade-sentral-luke-parker-bennell-stevie-j#9mmjV8pQkRvs20VM.99
-
Dockers lack of scoring power clearly shows they need a goal kicking tall more than they need a mid/small forward. Michael Walters was their leading goal kicker in 2015 with 38 and they haven't had anyone kick over 50 since Pav in 2012. So the rumour of them focusing on McCarthy makes perfect sense.
-
Mark Stevens on Ch 7 still reckons Bennell will end up at Freo.
A sms to SEN mentioned Bennell being seen out with Dusty, Jack Riewoldt and Brandon Ellis.

I've heard that the deal will involve Lennon and Astbury (to the Lions).
Not sure if they both go for Bennell or whether we get draft picks as well

Seriously? There are loads of blokes on the gear, including a few at RFC.
You think Buddy had a clean slate at Hawthorn? Bloke kicked a lot of goals and that was the club's priority let's be honest.
yeah seriously.
loads of blokes? a few at RFC? you state this like a jackstar fact :banghead, so you know this for for sure or just an assumption?
As for Franklin it's quite well known that he had a troubled personal life - hence the nickname 'Buddy' because somebody would always accompany him to his nights out as a 'buddy' to keep an eye on him.
assumption after assumption.
where did i say every player was clean? you know there are other options beside heaps of player and no players?
fair dinkim i never get over this george bush type of stupidity.
what wrong with the frankiln example? LMAO
as i asked how is that working out currently?

Lol, that comment sums up the credibility of the rest of your post. Buddy got his nickname from his family at a very young age to distinguish him from his father, Lance Franklin.

Richmond pulls out of Harley Bennell trade race
20 minutes ago
Jay ClarkHerald Sun
RICHMOND is out of the race for Gold Coast bad boy Harley Bennell.
The Tigers today confirmed they would not be pursuing the talented but troubled midfielder any further.
No contract offer had been made from Richmond.
It leaves Fremantle as his likely new home.
Richmond did not elaborate on the reasons for its decision, but the Herald Sun understands Bennell, 23, missed a scheduled medical with the Tigers last week.
Bennell last week toured the Tigers’ facility with club leaders including coach Damien Hardwick, captain Trent Cotchin and friend Dustin Martin and was considered a strong chance to join Carlton’s Chris Yarran at Punt Rd
But the Tigers will look elsewhere to help bolster their list on the back of three straight elimination final exits.
Bennell was seen socialising with Martin over the weekend in Melbourne.
Gold Coast has decided to trade Bennell after a string of off-field incidents.

Confirmed by the club on Twitter
@Richmond_FC: Following discussions last week, Richmond has decided at this point it is not in a position to offer Harley Bennell a playing contract

stuff Bennell you moron!!!!!!
Relieved to see you're not blaming The Club for this
If he can't be stuffed turning up for a meidcal, then he doesn't deserve a chance at our club
-
Didnt Bennell lay low for a week or so before he started talking to clubs? then he misses a medical.
What this makes me wonder, is how long after snorting lines do you have to wait before it doesnt show up on a drug test?

I just can't believe these players. He had the perfect chance and now this. Well maybe all clubs should pull out of the race and let him go back home to nothing for a year...
I am just worried now that we will top up with more crap, if we do that we are stuffed.

Well that depends how much you have taken up the nostrils which of course goes into the bloodstream. Can be traced in your system months after & depending on the type of tests required at the time. If your a known drug abuser then they would apply for the test that shows the longest of time 3-6 months as l said depends on how much they snort

Well done to the club for putting the culture first and not caving in to impulse recruiting. Dodged a bullet I reckon, bit like last year when our due diligence payed off re: Trengove.
-
Listen. Leave all the crap out of it. It doesn't matter, what he has actually done is let himself down, the club and us believing there was any hope of actually getting some big talent to this bloody club for once during FA.
I'm really stuffing pi ssed with this idiot!!!!

Time will only tell on that comment, we sure as hell didn't dodge the talent because he has immense talent to offer.

I thank the club for having a good look at Bennell and doing the due diligence. They have followed the process and probably saved everyone immense heartache.

Disappointing...
Coke is out of the system quick, amphetamines, dope longer
They can also ask for hair test, that can show months back, hence why some players come back to preseason with a full body wax and hair shaven

Only reason we lost the elimination final was the Roos bruised & injured us in Round 23. Same as West Coast carrying injuries into the GF yesterday. Several of their players were not even 75% Nat being one of them was gone before halftime

The clubs in WA are known for being dodgy and getting into players' ears to end up back home(or staying home via the draft).

Or maybe just maybe he wants to go home.

uum no thats incorrect. We lost because we still play like a bunch of scared school kids when on the big stage for the 3rd year in a row.
Yarran added to the mix being one of the softest players in the league, will only make things worse.

There is a touch of deja vue on this thread from 1,2, 3 and more years ago, we are stuffed, may as well pack up now, rfc is poo etc etc etc, lets just hope for the best as anything we surmise is generally mud :thumbsup
-
yeah well i expected nothing else from hartley's men
LMAO
what sort of butt stuffed logic did you use to lay the blame for this at Hartleys feet?
-
Not matter what u say we are still the ugly guy at the bar that hasn't picked up in 4 years now. It's not cool and getting sadder by the day

Oh well we move on from here
Good luck to Harley hopefully he can play out his days as a good footballer.
So who is left on the list?

lmao at the sooking

Stop being an apologist. Positivity has no place here.

Last playa they actually scored was Nathan Brown.
Hahahahahaha

@shanemcinnes: Harley Bennell overheard on Grand Final night telling mates it's a done deal with Fremantle.
Dockers culture what he needs.
Honestly think we would have taken on a whole lot of issues.
The club is doing everything to get the RIGHT player.
Trade period hasn't started yet, I'm sure there might be some low hanging fruit. ;D
Yeah they will be that low hanging they will be sitting in the bird poo!!
Geez your getting yourself all worked up there. :lol
For all you know we have the deal of the trade period all locked up.
Smell the roses mate

I remember the sky falling down (again) and blame game on here when we didn't have a crack at Bennell MKI and the 'smart' club got him instead. How many years is he currently serving at the taxpayer's expense? But I bet he goes well in the prison comp.

Bennell’s manager Colin Young said he had pulled his player from the medical test given they were still working through contract details.
“I advised Harley not to attend the medical and the club is aware of that,” Young said.

The Dockers have strong interest in Bennell and could land him cheaply in the exchange period for a second-round draft pick.
The Dockers are targeting Greater Western Sydney ace forward Cameron McCarthy with their first-round draft picks from this year and next year.

His manager said he didn't do the medical. Who to believe?

What was that nonsense about not attending the medical because they were working through contract details?
Is there a clause in contracts that says you can't attend a medical at another football club? If so, why would we arrange a medical then?
Something stinks here, I feel we might have been played....

Bennell’s manager Colin Young said he had pulled his player from the medical test given they were still working through contract details.
“Harley had his birthday here in Melbourne and he enjoyed a social night with his mates.”
A good manager would have told him to have a night off the booze and present yourself in the best possible shape-even if Freo was the end game. Too bad that it is GF day and all your mates are drinking. Given where his career is at, what sort of 'management' is that? This seems too risky for the contract he is on so the right decision has been made. Hopefully the club has got a couple of other things brewing.

From BF:
The players are not happy. The playing group is absolutely shattered. They didn't see this coming. Well at least the 5-10 players I've had referenced to me. You don't need to hear it from my mouth, the boys celebrated with Harley for his birthday. So it's evident they were really excited.
What's really unbelievable is that the club is playing a game of ******* pok-er. They haven't ruled out Harley, it's not done yet. Wait till trade week. They're playing a game of chess and in my opinion (this part is my opinion) they're going to **** this up big time. They want to get him for dirt cheap because apparently they're trying to collect all their eggs in one basket, they're being ambitious. Will it pay off? I reckon hell no.

Lets back the club in shall we......If he ends up with us great but if we pass on him the reasons must be sound.

They have told us what happened. He didn't attend a scheduled medical on time.
Given his history and the fact that the medical time and date would've been negotiated before hand, I think they could've made the correct decision.
Also, sometimes the reasons, such as medical results are confidential.

When did the club say he missed a medical? Through some poster on BF?
There have been conflicting reports as to why we wont offer him a playing contract, but all the club has said publicly is:
"Following discussions last week, Richmond has decided at this point it is not in a position to offer Harley Bennell a playing contract"
https://twitter.com/Richmond_FC/status/650498634551705601 (https://twitter.com/Richmond_FC/status/650498634551705601)
As far as I am concerned, the reports on missing a medical are rubbish unless the club state that is the reason why.

no need for the angst WAT, but I am thinking you are correct in thatthe club has merely said they will not pusue Bennell.
GR12 is not the only one to have made this mistake. Read through the thread and see all the carry on where people have read something the media said then twisted that into what the club has said and thrown the toys out of the cot.
My suspicion is that we will never hear the true reason why they have not tabled an offer to Bennell, as it may well be something that is not very complimentary to him

Well, yes, i have made a mistake. It was his manager who said he put back the medical appointment in light of his birthday celebrations the day before? But my point remains, i don't think richmond are in a position to tell us the true story as H B may not not come out smelling like roses.

Bennell's manager Colin Young will be on Trade Radio this arvo.

Hutchy and Barrett just now said it was a very poor decision by Bennell to go out late during Grand Final week when you're trying to impress and convince clubs that you've changed your partying ways. Out at 5am at the Footy Show after-party. It would've put clubs off.
-
:banghead why didn't RFC report this sooner?
-
Damian Barrett on Bennell: This whole thing may come down to the simple fact that he wants to play for Fremantle.
Hutchy on Bennell: It's a horrible look for him to be out until 5am the week he's trying to convince clubs to take him.

Bennell's manager apparently told Bennell that if there's no contract then don't do a medical, according to Brett Anderson on SEN.
Richmond couldn't agree to offering a contract without a medical check after what happened with Trengove last year.
So, it must mean Bennell and his manager are confident there are other offer(s). Freo, of course, is very keen.

that is exactly what it seems like. It was concerning the amount of times it was mentioned that he wanted to go to perth but his family and manager were trying to convince him to go elsewhere to avoid his old mates.
I was starting to get the impression that even he did decide on Richmond it would a reluctant decision he was coerced into

Question: What happens at medicals? Strength and flexibility tests. VO2 Max tests. Blood and skin fold tests.
Then ask yourself why would a professional footballer not turn up to a medical? I don't think Harley's manager was using the test as a bargaining chip regarding a contract. It doesn't make sense at this stage of negotiations, quite the opposite. I don't believe he has injuries or is unfit, so there is another reason. Blood test perhaps?

That's my thinking. Blood, hair and urine tests would be part of it given the background of HB. My opinion only (and its only speculation on my part) - it's what I would do in a due diligence regime probably for any player. If someone won't do the test then you pull the pin.

Fremantle, Essendon circle Gold Coast Suns Harley Bennell
PATRICK BILLINGS
Herald-Sun
October 6, 2015
HARLEY Bennell’s manager says Fremantle coach Ross Lyon is the man to resurrect his troubled career.
The Dockers have ramped up their background checks on the wayward Gold Coast star after Richmond went cold across the weekend.
“I’ve given him several options and he’ll make his decision in the next 48 hours, but Fremantle are certainly leading it,” Bennell’s manager Colin Young told the Herald Sun.
“It looks like it will be Fremantle ... Harley is back in Perth. Ross did some amazing things with Son Son (Michael Walters) and changed his life — and I’m pretty sure that Ross will be able to do some pretty good things working with Harley going forward as well.”
New Essendon coach John Worsfold wouldn’t rule out his club having a look at Bennell declaring the Bombers must “explore” the possibility.
“Plenty of interest in his talent and we need to do some research into his desire to commit to the standards that will be expected at the Essendon Football Club,” Worsfold told Trade Radio.
“I think we need to explore it because his talent warrants that but it is a package that comes and we need to really find out where his mind is at.”
Young, who also manages Gold Coast Suns star Jaeger O’Meara, said there was “no chance” the powerhouse midfielder would be leaving the expansion club.
Richmond was in the mix to recruit Bennell late last week but opted out after he visited Melbourne.
A medical test scheduled for Friday was pushed back after Bennell was seen out partying in the early hours of the morning.
The Tigers confirmed the test took place later in the day.
“Harley certainly didn’t miss a medical that’s for sure — I pulled him out it,” Young said.

Bennell bailed on Tigers medical
Joshua Papanikolaou
SEN
05 Oct 2015, 03:14PM
Harley Bennell was believed to be informed by his manager Colin Young that he should not complete a medical at Richmond as they had not made a contract offer to the player.
After he was axed by Gold Coast the 23-year-old has been sussing out his options as the trade period approaches and it was initially though the Tigers had almost sealed the deal.
“Richmond has obviously counted itself out of that one after he apparently missed a medical session with them,” said SEN draft expert Brett Anderson.
“From what I can understand his manager has said that it was at his request that he shouldn’t do the medical because there was no actual offer in.
“That would be an intriguing development, I thought you’d do the medical and then the offer comes.
“Fremantle is pretty keen and they think he wants to live in Western Australia, but with Richmond out there’s a pretty small list of clubs interested.”

So which one was it?
-
His manager is an oxygen thief. Very ordinary bloke. Was just using us to leverage more $ from Freo which is why he wanted the contract. Harley obviously owned up so we pulled out.
-
Interesting tid bit, Jaeger O'Meara has the same manager as Bennell. Possible there is something else in the works? :shh
-
I don't think so. I think his spoiled goods was bout to be caught out and he is trying to make the best out of a muffed up situation. Now we have said we are not interested, his price went down for GC and for him personally. He will be lucky to get a gig on a rooky wage at this rate lol.

His manager has definitely flip-flopped within a week. Gone from saying Bennell should play for a Melbourne club away from bad influences in WA to now saying Ross Lyon and Freo will provide that needed strong mentoring for Bennell. At the end of the day, wherever Bennell goes, if he doesn't get his act together himself then he'll just join the long line of unfulfilled naturally talented footballers who quickly vanish from the AFL scene.
-
Gold Coast midfielder Harley Bennell looks certain to be at Fremantle next season, with industry sources indicating he has named the Dockers his club of choice.
Bennell, 23, has been linked to several clubs since being put up for trade by the Suns last month after a string of misdemeanours.
The 2010 No.2 draft pick met Richmond officials last week, only for the Tigers to pull out of the race on Sunday.
The West Australian understands he has now told the Suns he wants to return to Perth and play for the Dockers.
Bennell’s nomination, combined with a waning interest in his services, means the Dockers may be able to give up as little as a second-round pick to get him.

According to SEN just now:
Choco Williams gave a slide show at a Friday breakfast about where Richmond is heading and he had Yarran and Bennell apart of that next year. So at that stage, Bennell was still part of Richmond's plans.
Bennell was expected to attend a medical at 9am but they couldn't find him until 6pm that night. So, everything changed after that and we declared we were no longer interested.
All up, Bennell, via his manager, has just notified SEN that he's officially chosen Fremantle as his preferred club.

Jon Ralph on SEN:
* Bennell was out late on the Thursday and again late on the Friday night. His manager said there were plenty of players out late at the Footy Show after-party but Ralph said those players aren't trying to impress a new club and show they've changed their ways.
* Ralph repeated that Bennell missed the medical and no one could find him or where he was.
* Ralph said Richmond probably thought if this what we've got to deal with then it's not worth it.
* Only chose Freo because they were the only ones left.
* Bennell apparently has told close friends that he's going to make Richmond and the other clubs pay for rejecting him.
-
well good for him.
hope he has enough tissues to clean up his nose bleeds
-
Confused - Last week it was he was always going to Fremantle .
Now he's only going to Freo by default .
Can't wait for all this to implode on the Dockers .
-
yep sandilands bennell fyfe
poor ross lyon
-
sandilands is nearly finished.
an interesting aside......
a few weeks ago on an ABC pre game broadcast they were talking about Freo.
It was stated that Freo cannot land a big fish.......true!
the reason being that the the extra travel requirments of the WA clubs is very taxing on players, supposedly taking up to two years off careers, in general.
Players managers are aware of this and point this out to players contemplating a move west.
Thus it makes it more difficult to to actively recruit high profile players for the WA teams
-
So what's our excuse Al?
-
Bollocks. Doesn't take two years off their careers lmao.
Pavlich 33 going on 34 this December.
Sandi 32 going on 33 this December.
McPharlin and Johnson played plenty of footy this year too.
sandilands is nearly finished.

Johnston missed 9 games and McPharlin 7 this year
-
Many ex-WA players have said it took a massive toll.
I dont think it's BS.
It's a long flight back to Perth. It all adds up.
-
Maybe Pav could've made it to 36? Can't use there age now as an argument against you just have to take their word for it. Also doesn't necessarily mean they are going to retire 2 years earlier than they need to but all the extra management surely takes its toll.

Richmond had originally been the hot favourite to pick up the 2010 No. 2 pick, but officially withdrew its interest on the weekend after the first-round pick reportedly failed to show up for a medical examination.
However, Suns list strategy manager Scott Clayton understood that talks “had broken down” prior to the Tigers’ statement on Sunday.
Bennell’s manager Colin Young confirmed that Bennell did complete his medical at Richmond, and that there was “a couple” of offers on the table from a range of clubs.

Fine player who carries a huge suitcase.

Bennell 'disrespected' Tigers in trade talks
Dinny Navaratnam
afl.com.au
October 15, 2015 11:08 AM
HARLEY Bennell disrespected Richmond when he visited the club as the Tigers looked to trade for him, general manager of football Dan Richardson says.
Gold Coast wanted Bennell out of the club after a string of off-field indiscretions and Richmond was interested in bringing in the star midfielder.
However the Tigers lost interest after Bennell met with them, and spent some time with midfielder Dustin Martin.
On Wednesday Bennell was traded to Fremantle for draft picks 16 and 35, with pick 22 going to the Suns.
Asked on NAB AFL Trade Radio on Thursday if he was disappointed with how Bennell presented himself, Richardson said, "Yeah, we were.
"We flew him over from Perth to find out a little bit more about him and where he's at, and we don't feel he gave that process a great deal of respect.
"Nor did his management, and that's why we moved on."
Bennell's manager is Perth-based Colin Young.
Bennell was cut from the Suns after an off-field incident in September, when he allegedly slapped a cigarette out of the mouth of a bouncer outside a nightclub.
He was charged by police and then later settled a public nuisance charge out of court.
The September 6 incident was the last straw in Bennell's troubled time with the Suns.
In July he was given a fine and a three-game suspended ban by the Suns after photos of him appearing to use illicit drugs at a Tasmanian hotel in 2013 were published nationwide.
Bennell was drafted at No.2 in the 2010 NAB AFL National Draft.
His talent has never been in doubt, with arguably his best performance coming in a win against Geelong in 2014 when he had 27 disposals and kicked six goals.
"He's now a Fremantle player," Richardson said.
"Maybe that's the way it was going all along, which is the reason why it transpired with us the way that it did.
"He's obviously a very talented young player.
"I don't want to be disrespectful.
"(The Dockers) are a strong club and I'm sure they're as good a chance as anyone to turning his life around and getting the most out of his footy.
"It just wasn't meant to be with us."

Firstly, Damo loves getting stuck into us, just.perpetuates the north melbourne richmond hating.
Secondly, if it was always a no, why would he fly out on our buck? For a free trip to melbourne.

Answered your own question. It enabled him to attend some after grand final party or such that has been mentioned a few times.
Could be a ploy to help push his value up.
Many reports were coming out that he was being advised by family and manager to go to a melbourne club, but he wanted to go home to WA.
If he is not a very mature or strong willed person, he may just go through the motions to appease these people, all the while not really being interested

Docker shock: Harley Bennell re-injures troublesome calf
PRIZED Dockers recruit Harley Bennell looks likely to miss the opening weeks of the AFL season after re-injuring his troublesome calf in a WAFL match at the weekend.
Bennell was clearly Peel Thunder’s best in a losing effort against WAFL Premiers Subiaco, with four goals and 23 possessions.
Despite finishing the match, Bennell has apparently suffered a recurrence of the calf strain and is likely to be sidelined for several more weeks.
The high-profile recruit, who joined the Dockers from Gold Coast, had been managed through an eight-week program to build strength and durability in his troublesome calf in a bid to prevent any recurrence of the soft tissue injury which plagued him through summer training.

INJURED Fremantle midfielder Harley Bennell was removed from a Gold Coast bound flight shortly after boarding due to intoxication on Saturday.
Bennell, whose latest calf injury has him sidelined for at least another two months, has been on club-approved leave since Friday and drank alcohol on the Friday and Saturday.
He flew from Perth to Melbourne earlier on Saturday.

AN apparent nightclub scuffle has put the career of Fremantle Dockers star Harley Bennell in doubt.
The club has confirmed it is investigating the incident, which allegedly happened only hours before Bennell was a no-show at training.
In vision obtained by Seven News, a man is seen wrestling security guards inside club 189 in Fremantle around 11.45pm (local time) on Sunday night.
The people who filmed it claim the man involved is Fremantle midfielder Harley Bennell.

And as usual a few astute posters picked this remarkably well.

X3
Sack Blair and they might have a chance
yeah he s done a shocking job re signing our stable of stars , lets get the carlton, Collingwood or ESS bloke ::) :banghead
:lol
-
Further proof that we were right to pass on Bennell.

‘I started tearing up’: Bennell reveals Grand Final heartbreak
February 16, 2020
Ben Waterworth
FOX SPORTS
New Demon Harley Bennell has revealed he became emotional and envious as he watched some of his former Suns teammates bask in Richmond’s premiership glory last year.
Bennell, who played 83 games for Gold Coast and Fremantle across nine years, recently joined Melbourne’s 2020 list via the pre-season supplemental selection period (SPP).
His first meeting with the Demons late last year is the main feature in Part 2 of Melbourne’s five-part documentary series ‘To Hell and Back’.
Coach Simon Goodwin, football manager Josh Mahoney, director of coaching Alan Richardson and recruiting manager Jason Taylor were all in the room as the club pondered whether to give Bennell an AFL lifeline.
Asked by Taylor whether he enjoyed watching footy as a fan, Bennell reflected on his 2019 Grand Final experience, where he watched several Suns-turned-Tigers celebrate on the premiership dais.
“After the Grand Final, I had to leave before the siren went,” Bennell is heard saying in ‘To Hell and Back’.
“We watched it at my brother’s house. I went back home and just seeing Josh Caddy, Dion Prestia and Tom Lynch, I actually went home and started tearing up
“Because they’re in Grand Finals, they’re playing in Grand Finals and I’m injured, no contract – nothing.”

Typical of the why me brigade. Work hard is what they did, something Harley has failed to do since the day he was drafted
-
Good to hear.
